Great low fares to China from Sydney or Melbourne, flying China Southern. These are via Guangzhou or Shenzhen, and most have a long stop on the return leg (some have long stops in both directions) - remember that China Southern will provide you with a free hotel room if you have a stop over 8 hours. 2 x 23kg checked bags included.         are you saying you had the 8+ hr layover and got free accom; but took more trouble than it's worth to get transported there? Which city was this if you don't mind me asking?

          guangzhou. waited a few hours at the airport. they waited until they could fill a bus. then they bussed us to a hotel. by the time we got to the hotel, only got about 5 hours sleep or so then had to take the bus back. ive read stories on ozbargain on people stuck in the airport for 12 hours because customs couldnt be f'd giving them transit visas, so definitely dont do that.

          anyway the time i went, a chinese dude who was also waiting for the free hotel with us got so fed up that he punched a customer service guy in the face

      Yep, it can be done. you will need to get a China Temporary Driving License which is valid for 90 days. that is pretty much the ONLY hurdle.

      Although possible and practicable, but not suggested. In China people drive on the right of roads, traffic rules are also quite different. You may hear Chinese tourist frequently had head to head car crash when they were drive in Australia for holidays, largely because driving habits won't change that quickly in a short time. So do Australians driving in China.

          Gaode & Baidu Maps are way way better than Google Map, very precise & tell you when to merge lanes, slowdown for camera etc etc, IF, you understand Mandarin. Most drivers rely on these maps but they do know how to drive there "properly", means you should be able to squeeze through narrow spaces with ~10cm allowance often to merge, turn or park. They fight for spaces but generally avoiding collision at the last second, however, some may not care, bad tempered or simply dumb. If you're comfortable with the above, you may still cope fines for riding on or crossing the lines where not permitted or use horns or lights improperly, or not giving way to pedestrians in some cities, etc etc.
          Some multilevel intersections with a dozen exits are deemed impossible for experienced drivers, you need a map & luck sometimes to get out correctly.

      Driving in China would be stressful as heck. Have just spent a week in Guangzhou, and there's:

      • triple left turns (like our right turns) that "filter" through pedestrians (giving way to peds is pretty optional most of the time)
      • intersections where four lanes on one side have only two on the departure side, so you have to merge super fast
      • roads will randomly change from 3 lanes to 2 or 4 lanes with no warning/transition, just the lane divisions are suddenly in different locations. Lanes are pretty optional more broadly, people wander all over the road.
      • traffic lights are seemingly optional for bikes/mopeds or makeshift vehicles with no number plate (small but not negligible number of vehicles)
      • blinkers are pretty optional most of the time too.
      • frequent places where 2-3 lanes of turning traffic merge with 2-3 lanes of regular traffic on a road or another movement through an intersection. You'll both have green lights, and both sets of traffic proceed simultaneously… no one has right of way, it's basically just yolo.
      • all of this super aggressive driving is done by people with all kinds of cars, so you can get cut off or have someone swerve into your lane with no warning in a Porsche/BMW/Mercedes/truck/bus. That just stressed me out more I guess.

      I wasn't driving for this, just what I observed as a passenger/pedestrian. I'd say go with taxis/PT and avoid the hassle, the metro/bus system in GZ was very extensive and they have high speed trains across most of the country.

        Add in
        Everyone playing Thier mobile phones and having unrestrained children crawling all over them while driving.

        Constant blinding flashes from cameras every 50 metres meant to stop the above.

        Drivers will cut off 3 lanes of incoming traffic to cross to enter thier apartment entrance.

        Random people walking between cars on a 6 lane highway doing thier job sweeping the streets the a straw broom.

        Despite all this during my 2 weeks I only saw two minor fender Benders, both involving scooters.

          In short, road rules DON'T exist. I see people riding motor bikes/ebikes on the shoulder of a road and freeway, in the wrong direction!. It's madness.

      Would not recommend it as others have said, its very different to driving in Europe/US etc. Is there actually any place you want to go that's not covered by public transport? A hired car may actually be cheaper and less stressful.

        There's no way way to get to Guangzhou for similar price right? Only option would be to fly back there from the end port (or skip leg but probably not possible).

        And vice versa on way home from Europe.

        Sounds like a lot of mucking around.

          Also keep in mind if you skip a leg they will cancel the rest of your flights

            Seriously?? On what ground? Not that I will ever fly any PRC own airline in my life time but just curious…

            The flights to Guangzhou are around $1100 for the same period.

            Their whole country is going south but Beijing Shanghai and Guangzhou still have their neck above water. It is the second and third class cities that is going down and bad fast. They are using these cheap tickets in attempt to generate some tourist business for these cities.

              @syswong: All airlines do that, has nothing to do with it being a Chinese airline. They will put you as a no show and the rest of your flights will get cancelled. The only exception to this is if its a point to point airline - usually the low cost airlines, for example Cebu Pacific.

              If it was the last leg of your flight and you didnt want to return to wherever you started from, go for it!

                Point out by Alzori below, obviously it doesn't work because your check baggage is checked all the way. I think the case here is rare but can be done if they only have hand luggage. In this case they cannot cancel your return flight. …..

                Say someone check in to a Shenyang flight with only hand luggage. They got off in Guangzhou. Do whatever they want to do then book a separate flight to Shenyang to catch their return flight. This should be all legit unless PRC airlines has their own rule?

                I know someone did something similar because China Airline now charging a lot for stopover. he book with them a Sydney to Tokyo return. He only took hand luggage and did not board the Taipei to Tokyo flight. He then book a cheap Peach flight to Tokyo and return to Sydney on the original Tokyo to Sydney flight. His excuse was he went into Taipei city for lunch and got sicked……

                  @syswong: You can try it, but hand luggage or checked luggage, if you miss a leg in your itinerary they will cancel the rest of your flights booked on that itinerary.

      Your luggage would be forwarded to the ultimate destination, and (when I've flown with them) I get both boarding passes at the start of the first flight so I'm not sure how you'd go getting just the second boarding pass for the return journey.

      Yes they will cancel the rest of the flights on your itinerary as a no show - and your luggage would be an issue as pointed out above

    Hi Cheap Fligh Hunter .. Quick question on Transit free hotel stay . if my flight is from Mel to Chongqing and Chengdu back to Melbourne the return flight has a transit waiting time abt 8.10 hr in Guangzhou Airport. Do I get free stay ?

      It will depend on your booking class, you should be eligible but it is best to contact the airline to be sure.
