Google Pixel 8 Pro Vs Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Hi Everyone, long time reader here.

I'm currently running a Pixel 6 Pro and I'm looking at the aforementioned upgrades.

The main things I loved about the P6P is the camera, telephoto lens etc and the 12gb RAM - I rarely use my laptop because the phone has been such a powerhouse. I didn't like the battery life and esp hated the bevel edge because I think that's the reason it cracked with the otterbox case only months after getting the phone and again recently. It's still about $500 for the screen so I thought I'm better off upgrading. Any thoughts or comments please, cheers.

depends what price you can get the p8p and s23 ultra for.

you might as well wait a few weeks to see what s24 series ends up being like though jus saying.

p8p is nice and slick with a clean android experience, but not at the asking rrp i felt.

    • P8P was good value for me at $830 on the Optus deal :)

    • thanks, yep I'm waiting for the S24 just starting the research cheers

  • Pretty much in same boat! Screen recently smashed (dropped it faced down) on my P6 Pro. Loved the phone for the most part but definitely noticed it struggling a bit at times. The reception in spots is fairly bad and it's definitely a little "buggy". I wouldn't necessarily class myself as a "power" user but I'm not far off.

I want performance and great cameras; both of these phones have this. I'm leaning toward the P8 Pro because I like the pixel camera experience (and vanilla android) but the power of the S23s is tempting, and the camera is not too far off.

I've been drawn to the Xiaomi 13 series too, but I am not super keen on spending nearly 1k for a grey import… But these look like excellent value for the kit you get.

    • What do you mean by power of the S23U?

My p8p feels more powerful than my s23u in standard day to day use with no gaming .. both with animations disabled.

      • Im going off the benchmark scoring etc of the Snapdragon vs Tensor. I haven't personally used either phone yet. Im sure the Tensor is more than capable for day to day usage.

Ok .. yes benchmarks are better for the SD in the S23U, but the P8P Tensor feels faster and snappier for my use.

Many people probably wouldn't notice the difference unless you have a specific awareness for minor latency / responsiveness .. or are a gamer

    • yeh the p6p is getting pretty tired and I can't justify replacing the screen again.

Speaking as a P6P user, I personally am not bothering to upgrade.

But what I will say is have a look at Samsung's reputation for crap support and overwhelming amounts of bloatware.
The screens are great, their cameras are great, but the software and support make it a big "No thank you" for Samsung without going for a fold/flip that is less common among other brands.

    • thanks, if it wasn't for the cracked screen I would be sticking with it, the battery life is pretty abysmal though

Good point about Samsung support cheers

      • Interesting that you have issues with battery life. I mindlessly scroll short form video for an hour or two a day and the lowest I've ever gotten the battery in a single day of use is 15% in the two years I've had it. Most days I go to bed closer to 40%!
I've heard of a bug causing faster battery drain, but haven't experienced it myself.

  • I have both P8P and S23U.

Can't decide between the two, so I just keep both and switch every 2 weeks to enjoy the best of both.

I don't like the S23U square sharp corners and P8P feels a bit snappier and more responsive and better voice typing.

So the choice depends on the pricing.

No way I'd buy an S23U when the S24U will be out very soon.

    • I'm the exact same, I have both and there's things I rather on the Pixel and other things I rather on the S23U. I wish it was all just bundled into one with a slightly smaller screen haha

  • Comparing a baby with a dino?
Hell wait till the S24 tubes tell you witch shadows you been missing.
P8: finally merge a family photo 5 into one so all smile
Ultra series are Phablets with desk wobble.

    • not sure what you meant by comparing baby and Dino?

      • The 23u is about to be replaced while the p8p is still in its child stage.

  • As a P7P user, I would not buy a pixel for over $1000 because of its Tensor chip. Snapdragon chips are more powerful and efficient.

    • This is the only problem I have, if I can get a P8 pro for under 1k ill jump on it.

    • P8P feels snappier in day to day use compared to S23U.

P8P battery life has been great for me .. never drops below 80% .. you might need to buy a few wireless chargers.

The Samsung One UI and all the bloatware/Samsung apps you can't get rid of are why I still don't buy a Samsung although I like the hardware.
I've been trying my mate's Samsung phones since the Note 9 (now Galaxy S23) but I prefer the clean Google Android version.

Fwiw.. some people love the Samsung apps that you can only get with a Samsung phone but YMMV.

I like a few of the Samsung apps but don't notice any major differences switching back to the non-Samsung equivalent apps.

  • Thanks for all the replies, yes it was on the proviso I'd get some decent pricing on either phones which I'm counting on hopefully when the S24 comes out

    cheers

Did my fortnightly switch from the P8P back to the S23U.

I would go for the Galaxy S24 Ultra .. so many extra features on the S2XU compared to P8P, such as the pen, Dex, plus all the other software features that work so well.

Does anyone knows if Samsung support dual eSIM (MEP) in its latest flagships?

I'm sick of waiting, I currently have a ZFlip 4 which has Android 14 (MEP it's supported since Android 13) and Samsung still lagging behind others like Pixels and iPhones

I'm thinking of switching to Pixel and be done with Samsung for good
