  • Will Officeworks price match catch given it’s a marketplace seller?

  • Who's signature does it have on it?

Is it just me or how have ereaders prices gone up so much with so little improvement in them as products?

I might be wrong but seems like the prices from several generations of paperwhites have gone through the roof (inflation obviously a part of it) but it seems at face value a very static feature set as a product.

Kind of surprises me that a newer ereader is much superior to a significantly older one - unless you're reading anime or so - but I still use a near decade old Kobo Glo that still has amazing battery life and works like a charm - I look at my Mother's last gen Paperwhite and not sure what the upside is.

    • Profits gotta go up, can guarantee manufacturing costs havnt risen that much, hopefully the poor person making it at. 20c a day gets a little more

Not just you - was looking to potentially upgrade from our Kindle Paperwhite 7s but the tech has barely moved and the price has doubled.

Yes I want the warm backlight but come on…

At least for kindle, I think there were sold at (near) cost because they wanted to get people into their ecosystem. I think they just want the money at both ends now. Also, they're pretty good devices that last a long time (10years+) without really a need to upgrade because they all do the whole ebook thing that can't be locked out from new generation of ebook tech because there isn't one, only the tech from the device itself.

I wouldn't have an issue with buying a new ebook reader/kindle because I don't participate in their ecosystem either way, it's just upfront cost and then $0 cost on the ebooks.

If you're replacing a previous model Kindle, you can get a a credit coupon. Best to get it before one of Amazon's sales so you're getting two lots of discounts in a way, which is what I did in a previous Black Friday sale. That stacked with Cashrewards as the credit was after buying. From memory it worked out to around $165 for this model.

The full RRP is excessive otherwise.

In terms of how much better, lots of improvements that made it worth it for me. Water Resistant, USB-C, better backlight, more storage.

They're still not perfect and they seem to only reluctantly semi support ePubs.. they make you email them to the device instead of just being able to copy them to it via USB. I think they're just scared of people using ePubs instead of buying their Kindle versions so they make it a crappy process.

How do you access the credit coupon?

It's issued as a refund (15% of the price), after you have received the replacement Kindle. Basically they don't seem to offer any spare parts, so if you ask to buy any part, i.e. battery via their chat, they will normally offer you this.

It's apparently not supposed to combine with any offers, but it did and I think because of how they issue the refund, it's not tied specifically to that item, so it didn't appear as a full refund and therefore stacked with Cashrewards cashback 🙂

  • For anyone who wants to understand what the signature editions is its,

    32 GB storage (normally 16gb)
    Wireless charging
    ambient light sensor/auto brightness.

When the average ebook file is a few mb, I do wonder how many folks have really been stuck needing more internal storage on their ereader.

Wireless charging? Sure, beats wired I suppose for simplicity

Ambient/auto light sensor? Handy to have but how often to users override these as it'll never know how bright you want it as well as each user does. Often more of a PITA than help and its not like one generally reads with dynamic lighting changes i.e you're sat in one place which stays pretty much the same.

I say this only to reinforce that I think they're struggling to find much new features they can tack on to next gen versions - perhaps as the earlier one's basically nailed the consumer needs so very well.

      • Wireless is quite handy, but again only using it once in a while a cable does work fine

Vchain are a grey import/international seller.

Officeworks won’t be price matching them. OP was lucky

PBTech also have it for $276.30 which if Officeworks price match would be $262.48

      • Already posted above that Officeworks won’t price match PCTech as they are based in NZ

    • Vchain has had so many pricing mistakes posted here that you might be more likely to get it from OW than Vchain…
