Leatherworking Leathercrafting Making Leather Things

Are there any leatherworking OzBargainers?

I'm getting dizzy asking google and bard and chatgpt about it.

Where did you start?
Why is every kit so different?
What tools do you actually need?
Where is the best place to buy unfinished leather in Australia or overseas?
Is hardware from China just as good and hardware from here?

You start with the bull and the cow.

I feel like in the 90s there were leather working shops everywhere. Used to kinda like the stink of leather in them shops. The shops were full of real thick leather, not the "genuine" leather veneer that peels off on products you get today.

Nowadays the leatherwork shop doesn't seem as common. Not that it would be as affordable as online anyway.

Plenty of leatherwork channels on Youtube. It's been a while since I dabbled in it. Tools required depend largely on what you intend to do. At the least you need a hobby knife (the scalpel style) or utility knife, straight edge, preferably metal, scribe/awl, cutting mat, cutting board (used as a backing for punches/awl when making holes) and needle and thread unless you're only going to machine sew.

Birdsall leather is the only local (Sydney) place I know of that's left but there's probably a few others.

Hardware from here is hardware from China, just with more of a mark up.

What about the wood burning, the greenhouse, the health kick? or is your hobby really starting new threads with zero intention of following through?

Perhaps their hobby is starting new hobbies?

      • Certainly aint going straight to the appropriate (craft specific) forums where the knowledge base is.

        The best hobby of all

      • That's definitely my hobby.

Sticking it out is definitely important, but there's nothing wrong with exploring.

Better to at least give one a proper go first, and reward the support with some feedback.

    • Dont worry protractor i am doing all those things and i do follow through. Im lucky to have a lot of time at my disposal

I actually ordered a pyrography tool that has temperatures suitable for leather too
