8 Beeps When Touching Handle on Corolla to Unlock

Hey Guys,

I have a 2013 Toyota Corolla with a smart key. Whenever I grab either driver or passenger handles to unlock, I get like 8 or 10 beeps consecutively. I can hear the motors continuing to actuate the unlock mechanism even though the doors are all unlocked. Note: Touching the door handle to lock has no issues and gives 1 beep which is normal.

I don't have this issue when pressing the unlock button physically on the smart key fob. Its normal to hear 1 beep to lock, and 2 beeps to unlock.

I have already replaced the front passenger door lock actuator as it wasn't locking. But I am still getting the annoying beeps. The car battery is new (about a month old). And I have also tried unplugging the car battery for 10 minutes.

Things I have tried:
- Pulling the car battery out for 10 mins
- Unplugged the power plug on the lock actuators
- Using the spare key fob
- Changing the cell battery on the key fob
- Checked there is no items on top of all seats

If anyone has seen or have resolved this issue, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Comments

  • Does it occur with both fobs?

    • Yep same for both fobs

  • Have you tried after replacing the button cell on the keyfob?

    • Yes, replaced it with new ones purchased from the Amazon sale :)

  • Are there things on the seats?

Otherwise, it sounds like there are still issues somewhere.

    • Nothing on the seats at all.

If anyone has seen or have resolved this issue, please let me know.

Google has a few things to check. Have you tried them?

    • Yep - tried them before I came here for more help. Unplugged car battery, unplugged the power plug on the lock actuators. Let me know if I've missed anything. Cheers

      • Anything on the seats?

        • Nothing on any seats

  • Check your car battery health - it might be power cycling/erroring due to low voltage.

The battery should be fine as its only a month old. The beeping still happened before changing car battery from NRMA. Not sure if the old battery did any damage as it was leaking acid.

  • Are all the motors continuing to run or just the one door?

    • Yep all motors actuating for all doors.

OP, can you edit your post to clearly show what you have tried? This will save us all time.

    • Nws - edited

  • One of your door lock actuators is about to fail. The car is trying to tell you.

    • oh man hopefully not. Just changed the passenger actuator already. That's still 3 more to change.

      • Maybe another one? I wonder if an error code still needs to be cleared after you replaced the first one.

        • Yeah, not a clue. Many of the youtube videos (mainly from the US) doesn't mention this.

  • Hi All,

Does a ODB2 scan tool confirm which actuator is about to fail? I don't much about cars - not sure if its worth the investment.

Anyone can recommend a good brand that is < $100? I believe its needs to be bi-directional too right?

    Thanks again.

    • You can buy a cloned techstream cable from Amazon. Run it on an old laptop as the software on the little cd it comes with triggers the virus scanner. This gives you the same functionally as the dealers have.

    Gentle nudge. Thanks

  • did you ever find the reason for the beeps?

i have the same problem as you with the same symptoms on my toyota crown after bodyshop dismantled both left side doors for a repaint.

i have searched my ass of as to why the car is making the noise and blinking. from what i've gathered the symptoms points to failing door lock actuator but my locks are otherwise working just fine.

my left rear door always beeps when touching the handle even tho the car is unlocked (engine off) so i'm guessing that is the faulty lock actuator.

for now i have disabled the answerback beeps and blinking via techstream.
