Why Won’t Telstra Allow Me to Buy a Wi-Fi Booster?

I’m trying to buy a Telstra Wi-Fi booster outright with Telstra points to improve signal upstairs but the rewards store says, “This reward is currently unavailable for your account type”.

I have Telstra FTTP on an upfront internet plan that was an offer two years ago and remains a wicked deal so I don’t want to change from it. Further down on the page under things you should know it says, “Not compatible with Telstra Upfront Internet Plan.”

How would the plan choice affect compatibility - especially since I’m trying to buy it outright? I’m using a gen2 Telstra modem and as far as I’m aware it’s compatible with the booster.

and remains a wicked deal so I don’t want to change from it.

Companies offer "deals" based on the economic benefit to them.

If your deal is wicked for you, I would guess its not so wicked for them, so why give you any extra, which costs them.

Apart from mistakes, they tend to realise that unprofitable deals in the long run isnt good for their survival. Unless they can get the 🇦🇺 taxpayer to prop them up 🎅

You can always buy the device from a second supplier. eg ebay etc

  • It is a privatised world.
Ask Gerry to get that great Optus feeling and get his share prize up!
He does sell boosters and the established media thinks he knows better!

  • Does it have to be a Telstra booster? Can you use alternatives such as a Ubiquiti WAP or a Google Nest?

Wifi boosters are pretty $hit IMHO and a waste, a properly setup mesh system from like Asus or Tp-link is heaps better

    • Gen 3 boosters are tri-band. It’s great little devices granted you don’t want to plug stuff into them (only 1 lan port). You can get a switch… just don’t use d-link switches.

A wifi booster is just Telstra's name for a mesh system, isn't it? The description on the web site sounds exactly like a mesh system.

  • If you pop into store they can claim points for you.

  • Just sort it out physically. Go to shop or call a human.
Pop up windows are inanimate objects. They don't care

Wouldn't it be logical to contact Telstra rather than make a post on a random bargain website?

      There are other bargain websites?

  • You can buy Wifi boosters from any IT /computer shop. As others have mentioned the actual result of the boosted Wifi signal in your home will vary. As some models are better then others.
Telstra just re-brand a lot of Nokia stuff so TP-link or any of the decent brands should do the job.
In my experience when setup correctly and not hidden behind the couch they do a pretty good job of boosting the Wireless output.
