Retractable garden hose reel - recommendations

Does anyone have retractable garden hose reel? Do they also run with electricity or usually with its mechanical design only (spring or whatever system it uses to auto-retract)? Did you have to mount it on wall?

Happy to get some recommendations if you are using one.

It's a spring design, mounts on the wall. With a proper drill bit it takes like 10mins to attach it to a brick wall.

The usual garden hose becomes stiff after a few months under the sun, I used to change those at least once a year. With retractable reel it's all stored inside the box, it's been a few years already and the hose is still smooth and flexible. And it's all nicely packed. Highly recommend.

We have the hoselink one, no problems, spring retraction.

  • I have a Holman 30m Retractable Hose Reel which came with the house when we bought it. Works well, have no issues and the hose is good quality. Spring Restraction and very happy with it. Mounted to the side of the house in the brick work.

Considering buying one for my front yard so its all neat and tidy.

    • Thanks for sharing the link. The reviews on Bunnings website looks terribly bad though.

I have the Holman and it is a pile of crap, like all their products.

  • Gardena retractable hose reel! Comes in 15, 20 and 30m. Works with all standard fittings. Higher price point than competition, but well worth it imho

We bought a Hoselink spring retractable 30m about 3 years back, which we’re very happy with. Then a couple of years back a relative gave us two more, a 30m spring retractable Holman and a battery powered Holman. For us the Holman 30m battery powered wins the race. It’s just so easy to use, the li.ion battery lasts anything up to a year, has an LED indicator, it’s a simple recharge with the supplied battery connection and the hose itself is very good quality. I also like the 180 degree swivel. Put it this way, when one eventually dies, we will replace with another Holman battery operated.

Hose link is good. Their connection system is better at not leaking or bursting off.

Mechanical (spring) retraction system works well.

Also found a hoselink in council cleanup. The spring for retracting was busted so I pulled it apart and put a handle on. Manual wind works well too. Only thing was I wasn’t ready for the spring when I pulled it apart. It flew out everywhere and caused some minor injuries! Could have been a lot worse

I have an aldi retractable hose and it just stopped retracting recently after about 6 months of use so I was planning to take it apart tomorrow to see if I could repair it. Any advice on how I can do this safely?

Carefully! When you get to the spring bit it will be coiled up under tension in the middle somewhere just be super careful and know that if you pull it out there’s a lot of energy stored in there trying to straighten it out.

  • Mechanical spring, no electricity required. I don't like them though. They are usually made with 3/8" instead of 1/2" tubing, and the length is great for longer runs, but when you're only using it 5m away it severely constricts the water flow. You can be standing there for 10min trying to fill up a 50L tub

Fine for the odd spray down of a car or a single plant.
