Some decent prices on entry-level Pioneer DJ controllers, looks like part of Amazon's Boxing Day Sale:

DDJ-200 for $199
DDJ-REV1 for $299 (also additional $50 cashback via Jands promotion but it has to be purchased by the 22nd of December and redeemed by the 5th of January - see conditions. Please note estimated delivery date if attempting to redeem as it seems to require the serial number)

I've not used either but have seen decent reviews for the DDJ-REV1.

Would I be able to DJ at the Ivy using this setup?

  • Sure but who is ivy

    • club in sydney

  • Thanks

  • Are these any good reviews are not great I purchased a Philips m1x-dj which armin van buuren put his name to and it was compatible with djay.
The crazy thing is I never took it out the box yet and never got around to using it.
And I believe the thing was used with an iPad if i remember and believe it no longer fits or something changed.
I was always going to get around to using it and not sure I can any more being so old.

I upgraded from a basic Numark (with Virtual DJ software to a Pioneer and it was a game changer.
These are perfect for the beginner DJ to do basic mixing.

    • You don't need to buy more gear you won't open. Were you planning on becoming a mobile DJ? Or was this to setup at home?

I'm just learning about this unit now, some hardware from 10 years ago is still completely fine. I play 10hr audio video projection Serato sets on 10 year old Pioneer hardware. Started on Technics turntables.

What kind of music do you want to play?

      • Yes but I’m sure the iPad sat on top and the ipad connections changed can’t remember if anything else changed

        • The ipad does sit on top. The version in the review linked below has a hard wired ipad lighting connection - which is a design flaw that should have changed. Unless you're planning to sell it un-opened, you could just open it yourself and try. Do you require a cheap ipad?

          • @formulated: I will have to check out your video later as busy with kids today etc so are you saying an old iPad will work as I have a very old iPad that is suited to this but I’m sure as iPads get older they lose the options of updating or adding apps and I’m sure this djay or whatever it was called maybe was no longer suitable. When you mentioned a lightning connection are you talk about some sort of device to allow to connect it? I did get this a long time ago with the intention of using and playing around with it but just never got time or the chance lol I don’t even know if it still work. If there is even a battery in it and still good.
But be great if I was able to still use it as I’m sure at the time was a good device and maybe still is. It certainly was not cheap back then that’s for sure.
I’m currently using a iPad 6th gen but have an older one and I’m sure the older one has the right connection, I’m sure it was the iPad being old was not able to add the app.

Unless you know more than me but I will check out vid later when I get chance

            • @bwatt72: There was software that was removed and then a newer version updated. The compatible lightning port was introduced from the 4th generation iPad onwards. The lightning charging and data port on the iPad is how the controller connects.

Either you're going to work out how to use it, someone else will, or you've just got a large portable bluetooth speaker with extra bits you can never use.

              • @formulated: Not watched video are you saying it gives me info how to use it or are you saying I can’t?
I know when I did look into it ages ago the iPad that I had I was able to connect to it the app no longer worked on that iPad.
And since then never looked back, are you saying there is some sort of connection etc or device that allows me to use it with current iPad or old iPad but as you know iPads get old and then app’s update and no longer useable on older devices.

                • @bwatt72: You're just going to have to watch a video or open a box to find out. You're not being very specific about any iOS you're running, which would make identifying software compatibility possible. DJay software is still available and supported. Since you haven't tried, you're speculating about why it won't work without knowing the how or why. Even just downloading the app onto the 6th Gen iPad you have in mind, WHICH ALREADY HAS A COMPATIBLE LIGHTNING PORT to begin with would make a difference. You can learn the software for free without a controller.

The controllers on sale here are different to what you already have, do not include speakers and require other devices you will have to calibrate as well. Just start learning free software before blowing hundreds of dollars, you can do this now.

                • @bwatt72: You're pulling some issues out of thin air without just looking at a product page - https://www.philips.com.au/c-p/DS8900_10/m1x-dj-sound-system

                  iPad compatibility via Bluetooth
                  iPad
                  iPad 2
                  iPad 4
                  iPad mini
                  iPad Air 2
                  iPad mini 2
                  iPad mini 4
                  iPad Pro
                  iPhone compatibility

                  via Bluetooth
                  iPhone 3G
                  iPhone 3GS
                  iPhone 4
                  iPhone 4S
                  iPhone 5
                  iPhone 5C
                  iPhone 5S
                  iPhone 6
                  iPhone 6 Plus
                  iPhone 6S
                  iPhone 6S plus
                  iPhone SE

There's likely no reason someone couldn't start using the hardware immediately.

                  • @formulated: I found the iPad I had before gen 6 the app could not be used anymore as the older the apps get and they update obviously last iPad was to old to use.
Don’t you not need the present app to work it?
I never knew it was compatible with iPad Bluetooth so is there anything stopping me using iPad 6 gen with Bluetooth?

But as you can see they are old iPads and the apps don’t work on them as outdated apps don’t renew.

I do have an iPhone SE on that list though which im using to type this.

                    • @bwatt72: According to https://www.algoriddim.com/djay-ios device require iOS 15.0 or newer. So that would be the major thing stopping you - which is what you feared, but we're getting a bit closer to the details of it.

A quick search found you can get your 6th Gen iPad to 17.0 at least - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/ipad/ipad213a25b2/ipad…

I'm guessing there's nothing stopping you using bluetooth when it's listed on the official website - the hardwired connection is still an option as well. If you have already tried to download the software onto Mac devices without success, then I'm not sure what else is possible. Unless sideloading (illegal installation) of the software on an Android device.

Been researching these tonight. The DDJ-REV1 is a lot better than the DDJ-200 from user forums.

    Also consider the FLX4: https://www.amazon.com.au/Pioneer-DJ-DDJ-FLX4-2-Channel-Cont…

    • Agree that the DDJ-REV1 sounds like the better bet if your budget can stretch another $100 further.

Thanks OP. Got the 200. I can see how the REV1 might be better for some, especially scratch/battle DJs. I ended up choosing the 200 because it’s cheaper, smaller and has broader software compatibility (Rekordbox, djay, edjing, WeDJ). The REV1 seems to be more for Serato users. The fact that the 200 does ‘hardware unlock’ for Rekordbox sealed the deal as my library is already set up in Rekordbox and this opens up performance features of the software that would otherwise cost $15/month. I’m just getting it to muck around at home. No plans to take this to venues, radio, etc.

    • Nice! Makes sense to get the DDJ-200 if you are already set up with Rekordbox - having a device that can 'hardware unlock' Rekordbox at this price point seems like a good deal!
