  • Thanks! Recently bought a Pro-Ject Audio headphone amp. One of these as a backup could be cool, nice and cheap.

  • Hmm. I’ve never had anything like this before. But been tempted to get something. I think my computer has optical audio out so this’ll work. Thanks! I might buy one!

    • You don't need to use the optical audio. This uses USB. Just plug it into your USB port and it acts like an external sound card.

      • Yeah, I read a bit more about USB vs Optical. Optical wins over USB if you have chances of electric interference on the USB cable, and I guess if you're low on USB ports like me. I ordered one of these, it's arriving tomorrow, I doubt I'll notice any difference between USB and Optical, and seeing as it comes with an optical cable and I'm low on USB ports, I'll probably just stick with optical.

        • Yep. Not a huge difference if you don't have any interference (and interference is rare unless you're using really long, or really cheap cables)

  • Reviews look good! Got one. Thanks OP.

Anyone able to tell me what a gaming DAC is vs a non-gaming DAC?
Does it have RGB lights or something?

    • +3

I think it adds support for a mic channel, as opposed to just audio.

      • I think it adds support for a mic channel, as opposed to just audio.

Yep, that's exactly it. I've had one for a few months, it's a decent upgrade over the built in audio on my PC

        • I saw some mixed reviews of this unit, but I think the people marking it harshly were comparing it to budget audiophile gear. Are you able to comment on music sound quality, as opposed to game sound?

          • +1

@mskeggs: I use it for music, movies / tv shows, gaming and work conference calls, etc. and it's paired with an EPOS GSP602 headset and for me It's been a decent upgrade over the built in audio on my PC for everything. The treble is a bit harsh, but it's got basic bass and treble control so I just dial the treble down a bit.

For the price I'd say it's pretty good for my use case, sure you could get better audio quality from something more expensive but I'm more than happy with it.

One thing I will note, is every now and then (maybe once every 3 or 4 weeks) I'll get static come through on the audio, I simply unplug and replug my headset and that fixes it. I'm not sure if it's something stupid in my Windows setup or the DAC that's doing it.

            • +1

@dmouse81: I had the static issue on my one, too. I replaced the USB-c cable that came with the unit and I no longer get any static.

          • +1

@mskeggs: Yeah the actual audiophile "budget" recommendations are $300.
This has major flaws, but in the $60 headphone driver category it is ok.

    • It usually means that it has mic input.

was ~$61 on ebay, so if you don't need it now, keep an eye on fosi ebay store :D

  • This

    or a creative G6

to help drive a set of Hd 6xx or dt900 pro 80ohms

    • The G6 is much better in every way, but also much more expensive.

  • I have a Qudelix 5k - which I use with my Focal Clear OGs, purely tethered to my desktop, never use it portably.
    How does this compare?

    • funny, I just got one of these too (albeit for my Elegia) and was just now wondering if I could simply run it tethered, wondering if I'd enjoy just having a box sitting on the desk but sounds like your approach works too!

  • How do you plug these thing ? I'm looking to try a DAC but I don't know what cables will I need.
My PC only has 3 3.5mm Jack.

  • Would this DAC be a noticeable improvement over an Apple Macbook Air M2's built in headphone DAC for music playback?

  • ELI60 - why do you need an amp for headphones?

  • I'm wondering if this review is reliable, it's not very good.

    • Received mine today and so far very happy with the unit. After listening for a few hours to a variety of music from PC through my Focal Elegias, for the money l have no complaints.
