Amazon AU $82.49 down from $109

Been tracking this bag for a while and now the price dropped to lowest ever according to Camels. Even cheaper than in US (currently USD68.8 which is AUD100 equivalent).

It doesn't have any meaningful organisation compartments so might not suit everyone's packing style. I like the fact that laptop compartment has an air pocket to separate your device from the ground.

It's well reviewed in the US:

  • Has great reviews - looks to be a winner at that price.

  • I backpack with carry on luggage for a few weeks each year (think hostels) and I’m trying to see whether this would be an upgrade from my old uncomfortable Kathmandu Shuttle 40L Convertible Backpack Cargo v4. Surely this would be an upgrade right? Any opinions appreciated.

    • +1

From a comfort perspective, probably not much of a difference. This bag doesn't have many comfort features (load lifters, waist strap etc). The sternum strap helps though - if yours doesn't have one, it could be an improvement.

  • looks like an amazing travelling bag at a damn good price. time to pull the trigger!

  • I use to swear by my Lowepro Primus Minimus for travel but I don't lug a DSLR or even mirrorless camera around with me anymore. Phones these days do the job for me.

So this travel backpack looks like a great upgrade.

If only the wife would be ok with me getting another bag. Got too many as it is.

    • +2

She doesn't need to know it's new… just say you've had it for years but just haven't gotten to use it until now ;P

      • You're trying to be too crafty!

I did a big purge of my stuff when I moved in with my now wife (the townhouse we live in is hers). Most of the bags I still have are in a 80L plastic crate and wifey helped me cull the obsolete bags for donation. So she knows what I own. The built in robe to my study is also stuffed with tech stuff so I have no space anywhere else that could have housed this.

Had this been something small like gamepads, yeah, I could get away with that excuse. But a 40L bag… not gonna fly (like my holiday plans for the next year… at least not till our house is built).

        • If they're in an 80L crate, buy it, put it somewhere in the middle of the crate and walk away. Next time you need to use it, open the crate infront of her and get the bag out - hopefully it's collected a bit of dust off the other bags and you're sorted.

  • I think the Caribee bag would be better for plane travel as you can tuck away the shoulder straps in case you wanted to check the bag in.

    • Hmm this also looks good. Bit torn now. Even though both 40l the Caribee looks like it can fit more.

      • +1

I got the Caribee when comparing the two a while back and it's a decent bag for the price, though I do prefer my much more expensive Osprey Farpoint 40 due to the hip belt. Some annoying problems with this Tomtoc bag are the multiple buckles you have to unclip to access the main compartment from the top. It's an uncessary extra step and for such a bag that already fit within carry on size rules, I don't really understand the need to cinch down the bag further. Also the side waterbottle pockets will limit some large bottle sizes. I also don't like the slim compartment right behind the back as if you put something in there that isn't flat and sleek, then it may mean you have a small buldge sticking out.

  • Can anyone suggest a good travel bag with the same features (especially trolley sleeve), but a bit smaller. Maybe 30L or so?

  • +1

No Hip belt is a big NO for a backpack at this size.

    • +1

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

  • I value what Maurice Moves has to say ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAwiDo-g9zE ) as he travels for his job constantly. I saw his review a few days ago and was quite impressed with this bag.

  • Do they ever sell the black versions for a decent price?

    • This was the black version? Well, the one I got was black anyway.
