[PC, Steam, VR] Half Life: Alyx $29.90 (66% off) @ Steam

710

Received my Quest 3 and Link cable yesterday and so the timing is perfect, having not played this yet. Of course have heard amazing things, so for those without the game but with a decent VR headset and with holidays around the corner, perfect time to experience what’s said to be something pretty special.

I've got an I5 6600 and a GTX 1070 and can't run this at a playable frame rate. I'm hoping at some point there'll be another way for me to play it. I'm looking at you PSVR2! Probably not ever going to happen though.

I first played this on a Ryzen 3700x and 1060 6gb with no problem (with an Oculus Rift s)

But then i still can't play ACC at a decent graphics level even now I have upgraded to a 3080 :\

    • I had a similar setup with a 1070ti and ran it well to my quest 1 back in the day. I think streaming it to a quest these days via virtual desktop might be even better with Nvidia fancy codecs.

      • Valve released an official Steam Play app on the Quest the other day, official streaming from your gaming PC to the Quest.

        • I did hear about it but have not tried it yet. I really like virtual desktop on the quest though, as it gets games from all launchers and puts them together. Works a lot better than the official quest one (even though I think they hired the virtual desktop guy to help with it lol).

        • Just the other day? Really?!

          Is it free?

    • Yes was hoping it would be ported to psvr2 but as more time goes on the hope dwindles :(

    • I played it on R3600 and GTX1070 non-ti, Oculus Rift. Dropped settings to medium, tweaked some a little bit. It was pretty smooth.

Some of the more prominent No-VR mods are making significant headway.

A few stiff animations, but I'm still seriously considering picking it up at this price.. 🤔

    • Had no idea this was coming. Doubt I'll ever do VR but if there was a game to do it for - this is it

      • Don't play this game. It will ruin every other VR game for you like it did for me…

Actually even plays wirelessly over steam VR app! Incredible gaming experience.

  • +2

even now this is still worth it, i replayed it recently with my question 3 wirelessly even better the 2nd time round.

  • +2

Awesome, now if only I can purchase a VR unit without feeling buyer's remorse.

    • +3

I bought it for the "family", so the remorse is shared equally!

      • +1

        that's the way. lol

  • +6

I played this on the Quest 2, wireless streaming through the AC network, and it is a phenomenal game.
If you have VR, or are likely to get it, buy this game, it's superb.

I have an older oculus (wired) with three cameras if anyone wants it, a bit fiddly to setup but still works.

    • I'm interested, but not sure how to PM you. You should be able to PM me though

A bunch of games are also on sale that are playable on Quest 2/3 or Pico 4 via DrBeef ports: https://x.com/teambeefvr/status/1737945626695111037?s=46

How much would I need to spend to buy a PC to run this decently?

    • +3

Most of the budget builds you see on here would run it on ultra. A 4070 graphics card is the most desirable (around 1500 in some of the deals for new PCs recently), but tbh even 4060 cards and stuff will be able to run this with pretty high settings (closer to 1200 and below), I'd pay the extra for the 4070 though, will prob run stuff for ages. This game isn't that new.

A quest 2 or 3 can hook up wirelessly to the PC to stream games from steam, it works really well.

I ran half life alyx on a mid range graphics card from 6-8 years ago fine. Looked amazing.

      • works great on AMD radeon cards too the 6600 XT 8gb works great with this game.

Don't need to go Nvidia if you don't want to.

        • Don't need to, but Nvidia GPUs are much better and better equipped to last for longer thanks to DLSS. FSR doesn't hold a candle to it, nor can it on existing cards.

          • @MrFunSocks: Yep some of the nvid codecs are superior for streaming to wireless vr and you have dlss support in VR for pretty high fps a lot easier (much broader support across more games)

I'm sure radeons are fine too though.

            • @RI4V4N: I haven't had any fps drops though on an amd card I think amd card are vastly underestimated you need to try it before you talk nvidia up as superior. There are several games that are made better to run on AMD video cards better.

          • @MrFunSocks: I don't know how people on the nvidia side can be happy with the 4000 series prices are rubbish your not getting the same bang per buck that you had with the 3000 series and the power requirements are just terrible, and many fans of nvidia are pretty pissed off about what nvidia has done, but yes nvidia is "better"

            • @kungfuman: I don't think nvid or amd are offering good prices. Like the 7800xt is the same price as a 4070. They're both about the same performance wise, one has more vram, one runs a lot cooler and has fancy widely supported tech

        • ya if you want brownie points from reddit dont buy nvidia amirite

      • Thanks. Had a q 2 for a couple years just don’t have a pc.

        • Your missing our on so many good pc vr games.

Decently on a budget? $440 for the quest 2.
      For everything in a computer system but the GPU about $600 (ryzen 5600, asus prime b405m, 2 x 8 GB 3200 cl16 ram, teamgroup mp33 pro 1TB m.2, versa h25 mid tower case, thermaltaketoughpower 750w 80+gold PSU).
PSU wattage is a bit overkill for this system but I think it's on sale and will allow a beefy GPU/CPU upgrade if you prefer.
Then however much you want to spend on the GPU. Probably a RTX 2060super at minimum which is about $260 used on ebay.
The more you spend on the GPU the better.

      You will also need a mouse/keyboard - ~$20. And a monitor(used off facebook/gumtree $50 for a FHD 60hz) or use your existing tv.

My Quest 2 + 3070 is running it at top graphic setting very smoothly.

Was waiting for the next discount. Will get this now and install the NO VR mod. VR is expensive and still sucks.

VR is expensive and still sucks.

Wow, I've been enjoying it for years, and I had no idea! Thanks for the update!

    • +1

Expensive and sucks? Many would argue the Quest 3 has changed this. Incredible value imo at $800. Does it suck? Hardly. Much prefer it over the HP Reverb 2 which has been the go to for sim racing for a while now. It’s cheaper too.

    • I'd argue the Quest 2 was not expensive especially for what you get, and the Quest 3 improved on that a large amount even further.

the Quest 3 lite next year may be your inroads if you are extra price sensitive (it's said to lose the MR, which honestly is worth having)

  • Small price to pay for the most incredible gaming experience yet created.

  • Not sure if it's the correct place to ask but I've tried to google it and can't get any good answer.
I've been doing PCvr for 2 years with Quest 2 and 3070 card, I can play Alyx and Assetto Corsa with impressive graphics. But for the other games I play, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Assetto Corsa Competizione, DCS and Microsoft Flight Simulator, it either runs at lower FPS or lower resolution so can't really enjoy fully the VRness of the game. I'm wondering am I not optimising the settings? Or I've reached the limit of my hard ware. If so, should I upgrade my Quest 2 to Quest 3 or a better graphic card is more important? Thanks in advance.

Btw, Alyx is a mind-blowing game if you've got VR, definitely worth it. And if you enjoy driving simulation and doing AC mostly, get a VR and it's different experience.

    • ACC has always been notoriously hard to run in VR. Also it benefits big time from the 3d cache and CPU’s if that’s something you don’t have. What’s your current cpu?

    • MSFS is a pretty heavy game even for non-VR gaming.

  • If you have a VR headset, and a reasonable PC (The game even looks great on lower settings, it's really well optimized!)……

Just buy it now aye, game costs less then 2 pints these days.
