What Budget Friendly Non-Professional Outdoor Laser Measuring Device Do You Recommend?

Hi guys,

Looking to get one of those laser measuring devices for measuring indoors and outdoors, preferably over 20m and one that wont break the bank, maybe around $50. Wondering if anyone's picked up one for DIY use, what one did you get & what are your thought.

Looking on Bunnings, Sydney Tools, Total Tools, options are limited but none say whether they're ok with outdoors or not.

Any suggestions?

With what you need i dont know if $50 is enough. The problem is outdoors at distance it can be very hard to see the red dot.

For outdoors your best bet is one with an LCD display and camera like the Leica X4. Fair bit more than your budget though.

    • Thanks Sawtell. The Leuca is nice, but a tad over budget lol.

Does the daytime light have a negative effect on the laser itself or is it only not being able to see where it needs to be pointed?

        Both.

You are pushing for 20m range for $50.
A visible laser that is not too spread at 20m is quite powerful and not so cheap.
It will also lack useful features that make setting up and constructing easier.
Perhaps consider what you want it for and narrow down to a few - then keep an eye on prices.

If you are happy that the laser level you buy has an acceptable collimation error for your project one way of getting more out of your laser is to do your measurements in the evening when the laser is easier to see.

Thanks Salty. Primarily it'll be used for measuring room sizes and backyard fence-fence. I don't see it being used in a construction scenario, just general purpose/diy. Some time ago ALDI had an ultrasonic one for something like $15, but iirc it was only 16m and apparently no good for outdoors. I'll have to keep an eye out for some sales.

Low-cost, like Bosch Zamo work up to 20m but only in low light, otherwise it's hard to set on the target.

I bought a 'Mileseey' branded one from ebay and it works well enough and accurate enough for my DIY uses.
Has an angle sensor and calculates vertical heights which is what I wanted at the time as I was building garden retaining walls.
Hard to use outdoors at distances greater than 30m, easiest to do measurements just before sunset and use something like a bucket at the aiming point and 'walk' the laser point up to the target.

    • Thanks for the suggestion oldmate :). I noticed you can get laser markers, wonder if they would help at all for outside work?

You have just missed out on Bosch recent sale. I picked up the glm400 with tripod via redemption for $79.95 recently and quite happy with it.

See if you can hold out and another sale should be around the corner etc

    • Damn, lol. All good, it's not urgent so I can keep an eye out for future sales. :)
