    Do you like Cox?

    • +1

      Only red ones

    • I don't like it when the neighbours Cox cuts my grass

      • Must be some really sharp Cox

    • +3

      Yes

      • +4

Have you been waiting 11 years for this joke?

    • +3

Not their push range, only their pull range.

      • No self propelled cox?

    • -2

Only when I push Cox, deep into my mouf.

  • This or a Makita 36V jobbie?

    • +2

      TL:DR
My 3yo 82V Victa battery mower died and was deemed non-repairable.
What a joke and a waste!
Even the most bottom end petrol mower will be repairable in 5+ years, so it's back to petrol for me.
      .
      .
      .

Bought Victa 82V from Bunnings just over 3 years ago.
It stopped working in October. (put away after mowing one week, wouldn't start the following week).
From what I could find online, it was a motherboard failure.

Bunnings sent it off for repair, 3 weeks later I got a call telling me it was out of warranty and unrepairable!
It was actually still in warranty (5 years, not 3), but I had to send them a photo of my Warranty card for them to accept this, but this is beside the point, Warranty shouldn't have come into the discussion at all for a 3 year old lawn mower! - Victa added to the list of shitty companies I will not buy from.
A further 2 weeks passed before I was contacted again re-confirming that even under Warranty it was unrepairable (I half expected it to be magically repairable after they discovered it was under Warranty). They offered me a discount on a new mower or one of their 36V mowers.
As I never wish to deal with Victa again and because a 36V mower is no substitute for a 82V mower (even if it performs the same, the batteries are going to have to push more than double the current to provide the same power output), I demanded a full refund from Bunnings and the mower went into e-Waste.
Hopefully someone recovers it as the parts are available from overseas for $100 if my theory is correct and it is indeed a motherboard failure.

      • So , what have we learnt?

        • +1

          1) Victa are the type of Cox, you don't want to be
          2) battery tools can die at a moment's notice and are not user repairable when they do so.
I've since seen user reports indicating that this issue occurs across a number of the "top level" brands.
          3) 100+ years of incremental technology improvement leads to reliability and repairability.

      • I'm curious.
This unit is discontinued according to Choice. Poor electronics causing failure due to dust buildup and no spares available. However:
        1. In Australia, we have the Consumer Guarantee. It is implemented by State Consumer Agencies & rigorously so. The Victa website shows this was covered by a 5 year warranty by Victa and, at a cost of ~$900AUD, there's no doubt that this unit would still be covered by Consumer Guarantee. It is only used say 20-40 times per year, would be expected to last at least a decade.
        2. For such catastrophic failure, it is your choice to have it repaired, replaced or refunded. Pure and simple. You need to write intelligently & persuasively to your State Consumer Agency who will wave the baton on your behalf. You will win. You will get your money back.
        3. Hopefully you can retrieve the unit from "e waste". If not, you have prematurely surrendered and will find it a bit harder to win the good fight - you might need your documentation between yourself & Victa, Bunnings & perhaps a Stat Dec.
        4. My old Powertorque 160cc 2 stroke Victa gave me ~20 years of pain free service. I replaced it with a 4 stroke Victa Supermulcher Briggs & Stratton 500E 4 stroke which runs like a dream. It cost me $500 from Bunnings. Perhaps when you win your Consumer Guarantee fight (and you should even though you disposed of the unit prematurely) and retrieve your $900, you can buy a 4 stroke with the Briggs & Stratton and pocket the residual.

        • I have my refund.
And I am pocketing the difference in going back to this Petrol unit, but I specifically eliminated Briggs and Stratton and Victa (which is owned by B&S) because of their shameful customer service/product support.

  • How much does it weigh?

    • Not specified, but all the Alloy deck competition are in the low 30Kg range.
      I'm assuming similar.

      • I asked them and this is the reply:

        "Around 50kgs"

Holy cow! I'm not pushing a 50kg mower around on my spongy lawn. It will kill me.

        • That can't possibly be correct.
The steel deck version isn't anywhere near that weight, I've seen that in the flesh, same motor (just a Steel deck instead of Aluminium) to verify..

          • @ESEMCE: Probably true but in the suspicious absence of that vital spec anywhere on their site and the reply, no way I am going to risk getting one.

            • @shaybisc: Probably true?
Absolute worst case it'll be the same weight as the Steel deck version which had no detectable weight difference to the Honda HRU19 that was immediately next to it with a spec weight of 33Kg.

An additional ~20Kg of Aluminium is a LOT of Aluminium! There'd be no room left for the blades!
I suspect you got quoted the weight of the 21" Self Propelled model as these typically come in around 50Kg.

              • @ESEMCE: I asked them for clarification but then noticed they are closed today and won't be back till after the code expires.

                • @shaybisc: Well hopefully I'll have mine before then to 100% confirm.

                • +1

@shaybisc: I picked mine up this morning and weighed it on the Industrial Scales at work.
Comes in at 31.7Kg with oil and quarter of a tank of fuel.

    Warranty is 4 years :-)
I just had this confirmed via the fb chat for cox mowers
Website should be updated soon to reflect

    • Yeah the Warranty seemed ridiculously small especially for the components.

      • Pretty much.
I was tossing up between the Rover Duracut 410 and this and given the components in the cox I was genuinely curious as to why they specified 2 years.
Ended up pulling the trigger on the cox and my local dealer already called to give an eta

        • +1

Paperwork that came with mine says only 2 years and as we've seen above (quoting ~50Kg weight for a 19" alloy deck mower) their customer service seems to have very little idea.
But yeah, odd choice given the only component that's really likely to cause issues over that time is the Engine which otherwise seems to have a 5 year warranty from other vendors.

The Mower shop I picked mine up from said it was the first Cox Push mower they'd ever seen (they typically only stock their ride-ons). But that they were impressed with it.
The deck is pretty thick, must be something like 7mm. Catcher is a 2 Piece. Handle is probably the bit that feels like a bit of a downgrade from my old Victa. probably just a smaller diameter tubing more than anything.
As a small bonus the shop had it fully assembled and filled with oil and a quarter tank of fuel to do a demonstration/test start. No additional charge for that either.

          • @ESEMCE: Oh thats a nice experience from the dealer.
Thanks for the explanation on the warranty, I will check my papers when I get them.

  • Anyone know what replacement blades are compatible with this mower? I don't see anyone readily selling them.
Blade width / length / hole diameter? (Cox part: KITCP19)

I usually stock up on blades with SCA club credits.

    • I've never replaced a mower Blade. Not sure my old man ever did either.
I've only ever given them a touch up with a grinder now and then.
Roughly 105mm from tip to the centre of the bolt. 45mm wide

      • Thanks, appreciated.
Replaced far too many blades over the years. Folks will throw out a mower because it's vibrating like crazy. Damaged blade replacement an easy fix.
Ive got a 30 year old COX 18" push which has lasted engine still runs solid, just got a few parts starting to fall off.
Shed full of Victa mowers with Briggs and Stratton engines for donor parts. Looking to clear them all out and get a new one.

  • I ran into the "Auto-choke issue"* with this mower (I stopped the mower to take a ~5 minute call). Fortunately I had read of this issue with Honda motors during my research.

*Hot mower stopped wont start again if the motor hasn't cooled sufficiently

Solution, instead of trying to re-start in the "Start" position, move throttle lever to "half speed" position. Started first pull after this.

  • What was the turn around on your order? Still waiting from an update from COX sales on my order from end of the year.

    • It was pretty quick, but Cox's communication is apparently shite. Follow up with the dealer direct.

I actually purchased on the 9th December, waited 2 weeks, and called the dealer cause my lawn NEEDED mowing and I was getting a bit desperate. They said it had been delivered to them out of the blue with no communication from Cox as to what to do with it.

  • Is a quality purchase at this price. Alloy deck, good engine from quality maker, 4 x swingback blades rather than a cheap bar blade (hopefully blades etc should be good quality) - with basic maintenance you'll easily get 10yrs+ use from this.

Battery gear looks great but it's the built in redundancy/obselescence thats going to catch everyone out ie in 3-5yrs it's having electrical issues or batts aren't holding charge & perhaps aren't made anymore etc.

The #1 easy thnig you can do with petrol mowers is fit a fuel tap and switch it off prior to turning off mower, allowing the fuel to be drained from the carb prior to putting it away. Draining of fuel prior to winter storage also is a bg help! And don't ever use E10 - only ULP 91RON.
