Is this the breakable pyrex or the good pyrex?

    • +3

      PYREX = good
pyrex = bad ( not really bad, just doesn't do too well at higher temperatures)

Y'all watch How To Cook That? Lawtil's comment was debunked

      • +4

I haven’t seen that, but I’m not sure there is anything to debunk? The French made PYREX is made from borosilicate, the pyrex is made from toughened glass.
Borosilicate is better able to handle wide temperature swings, so is more durable. It may well be that normal glass is fine for your uses.

On the linked page, the Made in France bowls have a logo to that effect.

There was an amazing lack of context there.

Anyways, is small-letter pyrex borosilicate or is it tempered glass?

    • The real question is is it made from:
      a) float / soda-lime glass
      b) borosilicate glass

Depending on what you are using it for the borosilicate is what I call Pyrex and the float is normal cheap glass.

    • container good, don't like non-stick

  • i can only say about my orders few years back, they were made in France

i read somewhere Pyrex and Down Corning merged (do not quote)

You can see on the product images "Made In China"

    • pyrex trademark

      incorporated Down Corning (photos)

Is there anywhere I can get cheap replacement lid (the blue lid) easily?
While the glass container is great, its silicon lid is so easy to crack.
I am not willing to pay $5 + $10 postage just for a single lid while a new container is just $8.

Instant Brands is the distributor for Pyrex. There are outlets at DFO Essendon and DFO Moorabbin if either of those is near you.
Otherwise yeah, it's a pain to get a replacement lid and probably not worth it when the new container is more widely available and cheaper/not much more expensive.

    • I haven't had any crack but most of mine have warped, still usable but I do worry they will wear out soon.

      • Mine only ever live in the fridge or the cupboard and they all eventually crack or tear.

    • Is there anywhere I can get cheap replacement lid (the blue lid) easily?

      No

The poor quality lids are planned obsolescence from Pyrex

I am not willing to pay $5 + $10 postage just for a single lid while a new container is just $8.

Switch to IKEA and you can buy higher quality containers and lids anytime at prices better than these "sale" prices

I think those Target links are for the US store.

      • +2

Doh! Thank you for picking that up.

  • dang it, shipping fees must kill that deal.

FYI the target link is for the American Target, not our Target.

    Pyrex measuring jug:

Pouring spout allows for controlled pouring of mixtures with minimal mess and spillage

    Lies!

ahh bit of googling, and current Pyrex is tempered soda lime…

Looking at other replies here, will be getting the Kmart generic version that is borosilicate

  • Hasn't Coles had 40% off Pyrex in the last few weeks as well?

  • Has anyone used the knives before? I've got a Victorinox chef's knife I like, but could use some others if the Pyrex ones aren't total garbage.
