Was just looking around for one to round out my 4 bay NAS. Already have 3 of these HDD's installed. Best price I can find is $285 at Scorptec. It's like a $100 price jump to the next size (10tb) so starting to future-proof isn't really of interest at this point.
Thanks
Find Me a Bargain: WD 8TB Red Plus NAS Drive
Comments
30TB drives are due early 2024. I would wait and see what that does to lower capacity drives.
not going to impact 8TB drives much
Nice.
Am I correct that I can add HD's of larger capacity to my NAS and it will only use the capacity that matches the other installed drives?
Eventually replacing them all?Depends what configuration you have your NAS in. There's different types of RAID, JBOD etc.
Raid 6
@EightImmortals: Yes, you're correct. In a RAID 6 setup, you can add larger capacity hard drives to your NAS, and the system will utilize the capacity of the smallest drive in the array. Over time, you can replace the smaller drives with larger ones to increase the overall storage capacity.
there are 22tb drives now which doesnt affect the price of 8tb drives
i sold my 8tb red that had about 2k hours on it for $180 with no warranty.
I then bought a 16tb on ebay that had 16k hours for $250
8tbs arent very good dollar value atm, as they are so expensive, i would sell them for a good price and look for better deals at higher tbs.
OK thanks, I'll keep an eye out for upcoming bargains.
I have a few 10TB WD102PURZ sitting in the drawer, very good condition ~6k hours, warranty until mid 2024. let me know if you need..happy to let it go for $150 each
OK thanks, I might wait for larger capacity red pluses to go on sale. I'm not ay hurry at all. Cheers.
Those are surveillance disks, im not sure i would get those for nas use.
I would either get wd hc550, exos or red pros.
Apparently the 10tb is noticeably louder as well. I really wanted to go for the 10tb, but that worried me a bit as my NAS is next to my head in my bedroom (though apparently the 12tb+ goes back to lower again).
