Recommend me a Potato Slicer?

Looking for a potato slicer as a late xmas gift but looking on Amazon the reviews are scary.

Is there anything you would recommend in the sub $50 category? Or maybe a bit more.

I was looking at this one as a backup but it is a bit above my budget:

They would primarily use it to make 'thick cut' chips like a fish and chip shop as opposed to french fries.

Thanks in advance.

I make thick cut chips weekly using a knife. Never occurred to me to get a machine. Are you making an industrial quantity?

    • I use a knife as well, hence the lack of knowledge. It will be for their home, that's why I wanted the best bang for buck without breaking the bank and have asked here.

Some of the amazon reviews are "the blade bent/broke on the first potato making it unusable".

    • How do you cook the chips?

      Deep fried?

Is it taste better than McDonald's for eg?

      • Par boil then deep fry, but only works if you source the right potato variety. Chips from the supermarket freezer are also great.

        • Thanks mate

          Would

sebago (brushed) and golden delight potatoes be best?

Also which chicken salt would be best?

          • @ATTS: Sebago, definitely not Golden Delight. If you shop at Woolies, 2kg washed: White Star or Eva. Coles sells a chipping potato but I've returned them in the past as they didn't chip. Chicken salt: go with any. I think the take-away outlets use Maggi Maridor but it's only available from catering suppliers. Oil: I prefer peanut. If your chips are duds don't be deterred, it won't be your technique - it will be the potatoes.

Knife…it's like a potato slicer that doesn't just get used once and left in the cupboard taking up space

one of the first results I got (no idea about how good it is or the retailer)

    .

  • Knife.

What you have works well… until you use it for the first time where it will squish the potato rather than cuting it properly

  • High velocity, highly strung tennis racquet?

  • A water gun setup is rather efficient and effective for high volume cutting.

  • Definitely not the one Jeremy Clarkson used.
