13th gen in terms of battery life and graphics.

I've seen what I think were ES benchmarks that showed they had good iGPU performance, even over the amd 780M.

Battery life however, which is really what I was hoping for, seems to be mediocre still - but would definitely be looking for production benchmarks.

Rather wait for multiple independent reviews first. Never trust manufacturers slide decks, because they fudge so many things to make it look better. Plenty of leaks saying that whilst iGPU does ok in benchmarks, real world gaming and CPU performance is worse than the 7840u for a next generation product.

Well I looked at another review which compares it to the Apple M3 and AMD Ryzen and says Intel Meteor Lake generates more heat, consumes more power and is barley is an upgrade over 13th gen. So they were pretty disappointed.

          • @shellshocked: Im sorry. But I couldn’t trust the results from someone that starts a video with heavily biased remarks about Intel in general when they have been stepping much ahead in all sectors compared to the last ten years. When this guy tests with that nonsensical hatred in mind, the results will be skewed.

Whether its gpu or the cpu - some people don’t seem to remember Intel makes their own wafers in their own factories (unlike apple, team red and green that buys from tsmc) and one reason for not updating nodes as frequently is because the facilities that makes the updated nodes are still in varying stages of construction, using internet speak - ‘let them cook’. Intel have plenty of potential in the long run.

And no, I’m no Intel fanboy. This is from someone who have been rotating between almost exclusively AMD cpu laptops for the last few years.

It’s amazing how this guy went length about the supposedly Intel’s failed rebrand (when we aren't even getting a whole lineup yet reviewed and basing it of 1(!) cpu) when AMD’s mobile rebrand is no better and only more confusing to the average consumer.

It’s too easy to feed into the Intel hate train to generate views.

@Brrrrt: Hey mate also refer to the notebook check review which is also very thorough compared to other sites out there. It has also been suggested that Intel has used faster RAM on the review sample, compared to what a retail unit may have which will provide lower iGPU performance.

              https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Meteor-Lake-Analysis-Cor…

"The overall CPU performance is pretty much the same as it was with Raptor Lake, but the new H-series chips now cover an even wider TDP range (28-115 Watts), so especially the multi-core performance can vary significantly between different laptops.

We are still cautious when it comes to the efficiency and want to wait for final retail samples, before we can give a verdict. Our results so far indicate minor improvements of the efficiency under load, both for single-core as well as multi-core load scenarios. However, Intel is still far behind AMD and Apple, even if the efficiency numbers are still getting a bit better with retail units."

              • @shellshocked:

It has also been suggested that Intel has used faster RAM on the review sample

That's straight up fake news, media outlets these days have 0 integrity to speak of:

LPDDR5X-7467 is already used on high end 13th gen notebooks like the Zenbook Pro X16 (and Asus even collaborated with Intel and gave us a System-On-Module setup with the ram right beside the cpu, what Apple is doing is nothing thats impossible for X86 to replicate, contrary to what pro apple media like to claim), saying it wouldnt be avalible in with the Meteor Lake is anything but a false claim. Lenovo themselves literally posted their new meteorlake IdeaPad Pro with 7467mhz ram.

Jarrods prelimary testing on an unoptimised engineering sample already showed the 155H having decidedly better gains against H45 13th gen at 28w. And decided win in the iGPU department over 780M.

However, Intel is still far behind AMD and Apple, even if the efficiency numbers are still getting a bit better with retail units."

Apple with their arm chips, sure, long way to go with catching up in the battery life department. But AMD? Far behind?

Again, refer to the aforementioned jarrods video, while the 155H does not exhibit any extra battery efficiency over the 13700H, but also note the 13700H was only slightly behind AMD's 7840HS as per this battery life wise. Where is that far behind claim coming from?

If you ask me, this is all just a ploy to shortsell Intel stocks. Aint fooling no one.

                • @Brrrrt: Hey mate, thankfully I don't believe in conspiracy theories, and severely doubt it's ploy to short Intel's stock as you have mentioned. Just posting more thorough reviews and will actually wait for products, that will be on shelf, to be tested so as to make a more informed buying decision. Always concerned when review samples change specifications before hitting the retail floor, due to past experiences.

For example the Asus Zenbook 14", with Meteor Lake, reviewed by some sites today and listed on Best Buy comes with 6400 RAM and not 7467 RAM. Whilst the review sample has faster RAM which can provide higher iGPU results than the retail unit on shelf.

                  • @shellshocked: Completely understood you mate. I am just annoyed at the current state of PC/tech media and the bias that is present here, when apple again and again makes outrageous claims regarding gen to gen performance increase and no media picks it up, but anytime these journalists saw one possible issue with intel's marketing, its 'all hands on deck' reporting, just a sad sight to see.

                    • @Brrrrt: Unfortunately Intel isn't an innocent party, hence the multiple court cases against them for anti competitive behavior. They were the darling of the tech press until the negative practices were brought to light.

                      https://www.wired.com/2009/12/ftc-sues-intel-for-anti-compet…

They already tried something prior to the Meteor Lake launch which the press found out about and criticized

                      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUT4d5IVY0A

If they weren't worried about their competitors products, why conduct such negative activity? Wouldn't you rely on the merits of your own products?

                      • @shellshocked: The problem with you delve into these anti-consumer practices is the unfortunately truth that…all of them does it.

So why is it only a problem thats getting focused by media when Intel does it? Again, im not taking sides here, but, as consumers, I dont see why we should stay away from intel if they does provide good performance per dollar, considering all these multi-billion-dollar business actively hurt consumers in one way or the other.

If Im gettin (profanity) in my ass one way or the other, I would want to choose to get paid by the guy that pays me the most. Same case here.

            @shellshocked: It's barley an upgrade?

Maybe it's worth wheat-ing for the next generation… which will be a-maize-ing.

            I'm here all week.

    • I've given up on battery life and performance until theres new battery tech or battery sized cold fusion reactors.

  • Any reviews?

    Custom duty 17%? wow.. I though it's 10%…

    • 10% is only GST but u have more to pay. Once got a keyboard for around 1050 and paid around 250 for custom

    • Over $1000 you pay duty as well

    No local warranty too

  • Hi guys, I am thinking to upgrade my laptop too. Currently have 5 year old thinkpad gen 3 convertable with touchscreen etc. I am not in rush, can make the upgrade within 1 year. I have been watching laptop deals and reading comments here. I am just wondering should I wait for minimum the following specs: Intel Core Ultra, Intel ARC, 16GB, 512GB, touchscreen, 2880 x 1800 or 4K OLED. If a laptop offers those specs around $1500 will be good to buy for many years coming? Being convertable isn't important for me but touchscreen is. So, this item fails because no touchscreen

    • If you're looking for a bit cheaper and longer term, I'd definitely be going for FHD and 32gb of ram…if you're looking to keep it from up to 5 years.

Unless it's absolutely only going to be fairly standard word/email work.

      • to be honest, standard word/email/youtube etc. my current laptop has only 8gb ram and I still don't really think I need to upgrade it. What bothers me is mostly huge bezel. The body to screen ratio is too low. Other than that current laptop does the job.

    • Hopefully something like the Asus Zenbook 14 UX3405 comes to Australia with a nice deal. It fits all of your requirements and has a big 75 Whr battery. Here it is on Best Buy USA.

thanks for your reply. I will be watching this out. my sister lives in the usa but $1300 currently too expensive. I can wait for a deal. thank you.

Be aware before you jump in, Meteor Lake looks like a bit of a lukewarm release, many real world reviews are showing CPU performance and power consumption is almost the same as 13th gen and mostly behind the AMD 780M APUs it matches in graphics performance, and there are suggestions retail units are getting slower LP-DDR RAM than day1 review samples had, which would inflate those iGPU graphics performance scores……
Certainly the linked listing neglects to mention RAM speed.

  • +2

Typical fudging of initial revies by the Intel. Review units have 7467 MHz RAM. Whilst the actual retail units are most likely getting 6400 or less. IGPU performance is very sensitive to RAM subsystem performance, hence actual retail units will be slower than the reviews.

    • Thats one of fudginfg the numbers what other ways can they use to ensure retail cistomers get a shitttieer experience

  • Another place holder gen from Intel - still behind AMD on the most important CPU tile:

    CPU tile - Intel 4 (7nm)
    GPU tile - TSMC N5
    SoC tile - TSMC N6
    I/O tile - TSMC N6
Tile connector - Intel Foveros 22nm

15th Gen Arrow Lake will be the true return of the king when Intel combines their TSMC matching Intel 20A process, Arc iGPU and Thunderbolt 5

  • These have been $1000-1100 on other deals with dGPU and 13th gen, isn't a great deal.
