    wtf ublock origin is free

    • +3

Not ublock usable on mobile devices, except Firefox mobile, and that's only inside the browser. I use AdAway on Android as a VPN to block things on most apps

      • you can use blockada , else can use free vpn based ones

      • As you say, works well in Firefox, and if you need a Chromium based browser, there's Brave.

    • +2

AdGuard provides system-wide ad blocking, including within applications. On the other hand, uBlock Origin is a browser extension that removes ads exclusively within the browser.

      • I tried using it but would still have ads

    • This is device-level ad blocking vs browser plugin only.

    adguard home is free

    • +1

Ignore the hosting, running, your time to maintain it.

If you can get this running at least for your home network, once dialed into your households use its a game changer.

    • Does anyone know of a whitelist for cashback sites?

      • +1

It's a constant battle with whitelisting and adblock lists.

I DO NOT EVER recommend using adguard with Cashrewards, (as they are most annoying to whitelist, they will JUST NOT TRACK with adblocking on).

Your best option is whitelist that specific client for duration of cashback purchase, or disabled adguard all toghether for during the purchase, (if you want to stay connected on the same network as the one with adguard home installed)

Shopback can more often than not work with adblockers (when whitlelisted properly).

I do have a guide for it tho - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/805733 (for windows OS, but you can run it on Linux also)

        • Yeah, I wouldn’t bother trying to make it work, and it’ll be ever evolving anyway.

Firstly I recommend using the mobile app as I think it tracks better, especially as certain browsers handle tracking differently. Then if your PiHole/AdGuard Home are for your home network only then make the purchase on your phone after jumping onto cellular. If you are using a solution while on cellular too then disable the VPN or DNS that’s providing filtering temporarily.

  • Adblock plus seems free??

    • From the AdGuard website:

You don’t necessarily have to buy a license to use AdGuard. But here are some ideas about how it can make your life better:
A license gives you access to advanced features of AdGuard for Android or iOS: ad blocking in apps, DNS protection, firewall, statistics, app management, and others. It also allows you to use AdGuard for Windows and Mac.
With a license, you can use AdGuard on multiple devices and thus protect your family and friends.
If you like AdGuard, that’s how you can support us.

Personal license is basically an AdGuard key for 3 devices.
      Family license covers 9 devices.
You can also choose the duration period of your license: Yearly (subscription billed annually) or Lifetime (1-time payment).
AdGuard license keys are universal and work on any device (Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS).

  • Does it work with Youtube at all?

    • Ublock origin on Firefox works. But you have to use YouTube on Firefox

      • I never really understood why people don't.
Background play, no ads, one less app cluttering your device; even external BT music controlls work.
It seems like all pro's to me.

there's youtube revanced for that, basically you would need to patch the apk yourself with the patcher here (https://github.com/revanced/revanced-patcher)

If you are going to try it out, make sure you follow instructions on the github or reddit, it is NEVER good practice to download a pre-compiled youtube revanced apk file.

Download Brave browser and watch YT in Brave. Bye bye ads.

      • Exactly, use Brave and problem solved with AdBlocking everywhere on the web without installing any app or browser extension.

Is the app subscription better than using the Private dns, where you change the dns to dns.adguard.com?

Just use the duck duck go browser? Its free

    Moscow, and now (pseudo) Cyprus;
Not 2 locations I'm breaking the door down on, to ask them to handle my DNS.

Probably nothing wrong with them, but even pre-war, I've never been a fan of Russias stance around cyber security\privacy.

  • +1

I just use dns.adguard.com on android in the private DNS settings, blocks ads in most apps and then Firefox for web browsing. Free

    • And nextdns can also be used this way. Simple DNS blocking is the way to go, you don't need to pass all your internet activity though an app. I block DNS lookup on my phone this way, and also via router (openwrt) for the whole home network.

The Adguard app, for iPhone at least, supports a split tunnel so presumably only DNS is (or should be) going to the VPN in such a situation and the remaining traffic is routed normally. Just reset the settings on my app and split tunnels actually the default.

  • My kids always complain about the ads on free apps for iOS. Will this black those ads?

    • yes

      • Just buy and turn it on?

  • Haven’t these extensions been known to copy your data?

    • AdGuard specifically? No.

  • AdGuard can only do so much.
DNS resolvers like Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 or Google 8.8.8.8 can only do so much.
Browser extensions can only do so much.
VPNs can only do so much.

    For instance:

    • none of the forum's abovementioned DNS servers can block IP level threats (upon detecting that a domain will resolve to a malicious IP address, it will not resolve)

    • Only the likes of "Smart" DNS and VPNs can redirect blocked services by making it appear as if you're in another city or country.

    • Besides NextDNS and Smart DNS, these are not customisable DNS servers and so they don't have pre-configured web services to block or redirect.

    • Only Smart DNS redirect contents without resetting internet connection and causing interruptions (i.e., reconnect service redirection).

    • Only VPNs, and not these DNS services can proxy all HTTP and HTTPS traffic.

    • VPNs have medium-high impact on browsing speed, but DNS servers are low.

    • Only VPNs can protect activity that doesn't use DNS.

Conclusion: use various DNS servers with varying functions as well as a secure VPN

  • What setting do you need to stop ads on iOS games.
    Just switch it on?
Kids always complain about too many ads popping up on freemium games
