If there is one area i find that is crazily marked up, it's the hiking/camping space.

Brands like North Face and Patagonia absolutely take the piss when it comes to the description of their products:

'Legendary rugged construction offers water-resistant Base Camp material, extra bartacks and double stitching'

    • 100% agree, but i'm still a sucker for them lol

    • +3

Agree - they're like 4X4's - highly unlikely to experience anything more challenging than a nasty gust on George St……

Hey, don't forget the "alpine-cut shoulder straps".

      • WTF does 'ALPINE CUT' mean lmao

        • -1

It's a more attractive curve in the strap.

Mad dumb way of describing it.

      • Alpine-cut my ass! (More like my armpits)

I have no idea what marketing garbage this is but I've been using this for the last 3 months as a backpack on a motorbike and the alpine-cut has been cutting into my armpits if I carry anything more than 5kg..

Want to go back to my $40 chinese military pack that will fall apart any minute just because this thing is soo uncomfortable..

        • I have no idea what marketing garbage this is but I've been using this for the last 3 months as a backpack on a motorbike and the alpine-cut has been cutting into my armpits if I carry anything more than 5kg..

Yeah, "alpine cut" is a total marketing joke. It should have been obvious within 30 seconds of putting one on that these things are not designed as backpacks.

    • yeah but Patagonia does not only take the piss, it goes the extra miles with heavy greenwashing too

    • I'm not sure that they have earnt 'legendary' status yet, but the rest of the description seems to match up.

Uh… having used one one of the XXLs for over a decade of airport travelling, ice/mountaineering trips and Nepal treks, the TNF duffels really are that good. They are pretty much are the default expedition duffel for a reason. My first failed after about 15 years then the outer started shredding from age and UV (but the inner was still sound). I'm now on my second.

No idea about Patagonia duffels. When they first came out they were shit- the ultrasonic welding that they were marketing at the time had a tendency to fail. They're probably better these days, but I wouldn't spend money on one.

The only other bag I've found comparable for durability has been Ortlieb. Fully waterproof duffels, but not designed for the same style of carry (more for biking), and not lockable.

A small sized TNF is pretty much a fashion accessory though.

I bought the large in 2021 for $131 delivered from Rushfaster. How times have changed!

Cracking bag nonetheless! Buy once, buy well

    • -1

      So the bag isn’t cracked?

      • +1

        No it cracks other bags.

        • ooft

    • I don't see the point of small duffels at all.

I have an XL base camp and that's about the right size for all my hiking/climbing gear to fit in one bag got extended travel.

XS or S… Why don't you just use a suitcase or cheaper bag?

I use this thing for hauling pointy and annoying heavy items, feel like you can easily get 60-70L suitcases.

    • pretty sure i bought this deal was well, beautiful bag. I wish i could use it more than i do

  • Thanks, my Patagonia backpack needs replacing after 5 years of daily use. This will do nicely.

    • don't patagonia do a lifetime warranty/repair system?

      • +1

They have an excellent return system.

Purchased a bag in 2016, dog chewed off the handle in 2022, contacted patagonia about if they had any advice to repair, they made me pay for shipping but covered the full repair.

    • These things make terrible backpacks.

  • How does mountain design compare? It's half the price.

Own multiple variants of duffels from Mountain Designs, Helly Hansen, Marmot and The North Face.

They are all good and will last forever unless absolutely thrashed.

North Face still the best for quality of materials/zips/reinforced stitching etc.

Can't vouch for Patagonia black hole duffel as I don't own one but I have their smaller bags and packs which are very high quality.

      • aside from value, what makes mtn designs better than tnf?

      • Thanks! Will get the Mountain designs one then.

      • Respectfully disagree.

        • Me too.

North Face might have become idiots as a brand.

But the base camps are one of their OG designs that still holds the crown to most duffels.

  • does anyone know the capacity?

I got a 40L OSAH drypak for $99 delivered and it is amazing
OSAH has additional features of ropes and clips that are designed to attach onto motorcycles

        hand it over

        • Shame on me

Hand over your OzB license. Return the order then re-order. This is the way.

        • It shall be done. This is the way.

          • @Kibbelhs: Don't forget to reclaim your OzB licence after. I'd hate to never read one of your comments again.

    • Thanks added to the post!

  • Has anyone had any experience with this and carry-on? tossing up between Small (50L) and Medium (71L)
