3 - 5TB Portable Hard Drives at $25 Per TB?

I was keeping an eye out for portable hard drives at around 3-5TB that cost around $25 per TB during the recent sale periods but haven't come across one. Higher capacities are also ok although I don't think I've seen anything beyond 5TB that is legitimate.

Is there a reason for it (besides inflation?) and does anyone know if they'll ever come back to being around $25 per TB?

Not interested yet at SSDs unless they come down further in price but does anyone know what's a good cost per TB for portable SSDs?

Thanks.

https://diskprices.com/ is a good reference (for yourself or others who are unaware of the site)

  • SSDs are at their cheapest right now as there was a supply overflow of NAND chips this year. Samsung and other NAND manufacturers have cut down production as a result, which would eventually bring the price back up.

I bought a 5TB from amazon for $164 a few months ago. That's the lowest I saw for a while but doesn't reach your target.

    • $135 last year, I got a couple from UK. Then a week or 2 later JB and OrificeWorks had them for the same price.

Don't think we'll see them down there again, SSDs are going to break through to affordable 10TB consumer drives soon.

  • If thats your limit you should probably look for 2nd hand disks.

you can find 2nd hand 6tb disks for about $80-120
