Free Fetch TV Mini 4K for Eligible Telstra TV Owners (Claim in My Telstra App) @ Telstra

1000

Jumped onto the My Telstra app and there was an offer for a free upgrade to Fetch TV as I had an exisiting Telstra TV. This is part of Telstra’s new acquisition of Fetch and presume they will be slowly replacing all Telstra TV’s.

    • Nothing has manifested for me either, I see Telstra knows their judo well.

The 2 telstra tv boxes I have aren't bad boxes and will be a shame to see them stop working.

      • +2

Why will they stop working. FAQ says it is business as normal?

Will my Telstra TV continue to work?
Absolutely. There are no changes to the Telstra TV you use today. We look forward to sharing how we’ll make your streaming experience better through our partnership with Fetch TV.

        • Thank you for the info.

          That's good to hear.

They are a handy little box for streaming services.

        • Telstra have a commercial agreement with Roku who supply the TTV's.

That agreement is coming to an end this year and Roku require Telstra to disable the device.

Roku have already entered the AU market themselves.

Haven't used my Telstra TV for years but managed to order one in the app. Thanks OP.

    Cheers mate!

I can't remember the last time I used my Telstra TV box but always good to get a shiny new gadget especially a freebie.

  • Thanks have claimed mine. I have 2X Telstra TVs. 1 i got from pre-nbn cable plan and one i got through a glitch in the Telstra Plus program where i was given gold status even though i was silver.

Will see if i can claim a second fetch box later.

    • Following. I have claimed mine and I got another one which haven’t been opened. Hope can claim again.

  • No free fetch upgrade offer for me when I log in?

  • Haven't used my Telstra TV in years but was offered the free upgrade in my Telstra app. Thanks!

  • Got one. Thanks. Had to add credit card but noticed it said you can update later. There is nowhere in the my Telstra app to update card entry that I can find

  • Will this be worth anything selling on marketplace? I have a chromecast so no need for a fetch box, but I won't turn down free stuff.

  • From the Telstra Fetch FAQ: https://www.telstra.com.au/support/entertainment/fetch

Can I link a Fetch device from another retailer to my Telstra account or to my Telstra Fetch device for multiroom sharing?
No. Fetch devices from other retailers can't be linked to your Telstra account or be linked to your Telstra Fetch device for multiroom. Devices must all be under the same account and household to work together.

Does this mean these devices are locked to Telstra? My parents have a Mighty Fetch (a retail unit bought from JB Hi-Fi, not locked to a provider/ISP) and I was HOPING I could just connect this Mini to it.

I find their information a little bit contradictory: https://www.telstra.com.au/entertainment/tv-movies/fetch

Will Fetch work with other internet providers?
Absolutely! You can purchase and use Fetch services without being a Telstra internet customer. Once Fetch is purchased via Telstra, it will always be a Telstra Fetch box, and is not transferrable to another ISP.

So is that Aladeen or Aladeen?

    • Why do you want to 'connect this Mini to it"? Is it because you want to share channel packs, recordings and purchases? If so, then you can't .

      • Share live TV from the Mighty (including recordings)

        • As Fetch devices from other retailers can't be linked to your Telstra account or be linked to your Telstra Fetch device for multiroom = you can't share recordings as it will be a different account unless the Mighty is also Telstra.

As for "Will Fetch work with other internet providers?" is that you don't need to be connected to Telstra NBN to connect to Telstra's Fetch service.

          • -1

@Borg: The mighty isn't, but as it's an unlocked device maybe I can add a Telstra account to it, and join them together?

Otherwise this device will just be ewaste and I'll be selling it on the marketplace 🙂

Fetch TV is slow. TiVo was better.

TL;DR: Telstra has a massive eWaste problem and their piss poor and inconsistent way they hand eWaste needs to be shamed on MSM and or other media outlets.

    Re:Fetch TV Free Mini 4K:
If anyone has either a Fetch Miny or Mighty already on their bill (eg like me, went and grabbed one early on, I was told last night I won’t qualify for a Fetch Mini 4K as I am already paying back a Fetch Mighty on my Bill.

Sux to be an early adopter. I also missed out on 40,000 points in October or November when they were offering a Fetch Mighty, outright, points and pay, or just repayment and get a bonus 40K points.

    Bastards.

    Don’t be an early adopter

Telstra are making it pretty clear that they will likely be dumping their Roku based Telstra TV boxes in the near future in favour of the Fetch TV platform which they finally bought a controlling share earlier this year.

Having to have a look at what third party streaming apps are available on the box because while I’ve heard mutterings of the Roku box being being continued, they were having increasing problems getting major streaming app support which seems odd as Roku was one of those do anything boxes over several generations but due to Telstra’s custom firmware they were having difficulty getting big streamers signing off on the custom firmware.

Having not played much with Fetch TV boxes or knowing their OS (guessing Linux variant?) I would have thought that would be even more of a problem with the bigger players.

Android TV 4K Lite and Max represent great value as streamers, but don’t have antennas.

Over the years I’ve acquired at least 2-4 of each generation of Telstra TV box (Gen 1/2/3). I think 14 in total - this represents significant eWaste and Telstra should be made to reclaim these items via a drop off system either at AusPost offices /LPOs and/or Officeworks which are already collecting eWaste though what Westfarmers are doing with that would be interesting to find out.

Telstra are totally not interested in taking back some of the 30 or so modems I’ve acquired over tte past five years - I’ve only ever been asked to send one back and when I didn’t they never chased me for it.

Telstra and other RSPs should take on the responsibility to take back eWaste items like replacement modems, which they send at the drop of a hat if it’s within two years of you getting your last one or else they try to extract $240-$280 for their locked down firmware on Technicolor modems.

Their Gen three (Black) model which started shipping 12 or more months ago I had a problem with multiple units withering being DOA or dying within the first 90 days.

It got so bad that I replaced “self install” units at many customer sites for a moderate fee I had 16 of these units (it infuriates me when the box says “PLEASE KERP THIS BOX FOR FUTURE SHIPPING” customers still don’t RTFM and throw it away.

I attempted to take the 16 failed unit, and yes I tested each with a known good SwitchMode Plug Pack PSU, to the local Franchise Telstra store where I ended up in a heated discussion with the store manager to recycle or eWaste these units - the store repeatedly told me the local council has a policy where there are five drop off points for eWaste, none of which are within 15 mins drive of my house and that being Telstra products covered under warranty it was up to them and their responsibility to hopefully recycle these units back to Technicolor for refurbishment.

The franchise store manager was being so belligerent about taking these back I called a colleague of mine who worked in complaints resolution and demanded the Delta number of the manager who point blank refused to give it to me, so I got what details I could and I said “look, these are stacked up and I’m sure you have a tape gun handy but I’ve gone into customers homes where they refuse to deal with NBN Level 1 Assurance because most of these have “communications” problems or tell the customer to get rid of the item itself. I showed them a web page where it shows you can return faulty products to “your local Telstra store” and this wasn’t my problem”.

I had a case opened and had a follow up call who couldn’t understand why I was returning 16 dead modems - I had to elaborate a bit but in the end they agreed that while individual. Customers can return faulty products, contractors such as myself should make other arrangements either with the local council or call Telstra and I said, yeah? Which department? A good 30 seconds the phone went dead while the complaints manager tried to think of which department I should contact, and then said I should have returned them one at a time either via their free postage service where I have to wait and get the huge PLASTIC bag to send the modem back or take a modem back one at a time to a Telstra Stire where they do have an obligation to take old Telstra items but acknowledged that franchise stores often don’t like to get involved with dead equipment unless they were dealing direct with the Telstra customer.”

I replied Telstra creates a huge eWaste problem.and lacks the effort or will to deal with their own branded gear.

I can see 10 million plus Telstra TV boxes, all ending up in landfill unless Telstra takes some onus on this and I’m pissed off because I don’t qualify for a Fetch TV Mini even though I have so many media players I’d probably never even unpack it.

    • +3

Mate I’m surprised you have that much free time, just take them to the tip where it’s free to recycle e-waste. The stores are hopeless

  • +2

just received it, fast delivery is about as good as it gets, no idea why Telstra switched from Telstra tv3 to this clunky shit, other than using it for the 3 months free channel pack which is nothing special & movie pack which is a sad joke, can’t see any other reason I’d keep using this slow device that lacks apps, guess they are betting on people purchasing channel packs, good luck with that, looks like a landfill device

    • +3

Totally agree, they are slow and the lack of certain apps is a downgrade from Roku devices. Example only there is no Kayo the last time I checked. Mine is just gathering dust in drawer!

  • Hoping I get an email/notification in the app. My family has been using one Telstra TV purchased new last year + another older model.

  • Has anyone found anything interesting to do with this yet?

I was disappointed to discover that you can't stream live TV to the phone app.

Any way to get Kodi onto it?

    • +1

Kodi = Nope. TBH, unless you need "Live Channels" a $39 Chromecast with Google TV dongle is much faster and covers mostly everything incl Kodi.

  • +1

Thanks for the real life feedback. I'm not even going to bother claiming a free one.

When the TTV3 stops working I'll move to my CCWGTV.

I'm done with Telstra and their disposable media boxes.

The four TTV's can go to eWaste (where my TBoxes ended up).

  • +1

Thanks OP! I got my previous Telstra TV a few years ago for free.

  • Nothing on my telstra TV roku

  • As reported (then deleted) by Telstra's Roku guy, https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/3n454803?p=24 as the Australian telco switches its official streaming device from Roku to Fetch, it will brick all its Roku devices next year. Telstra are apparently giving free Fetch devices to those affected - and some have had the offer. But I have three Telstra Roku devices and have received nothing, which makes me suspect the offer is only going to those who maintain Telstra services

I'm pretty pissed off with them not just because the Fetch is a lesser device, but because most of these are Roku Ultra's, which are excellent, and many of us paid good money for this castrated Telstra version of the box

So there are two things I can hope for: one is that Roku will factory reset the boxes, stripping out the awful Telstra firmware, turning the boxes back into the straight Roku boxes they began as and adopting us poor orphaned Aussie owners as new Roku customers

My most desperate hope if all else fails is that some clever devs/hackers will find a way to graft a new OS onto the boxes to save them from the landfill

It really seems a shocking waste of a nice and still current bit of tech and also an excellent way to piss people off

This post was removed from two Reddit subs (both with Roku in their name) and one of them banned me for a week. So it's clear that neither the Roku nor the Telstra spin machines want this information getting out there. So please spread the word, folks.

    • You can hope for:…."is that Roku will factory reset the boxes". That's like hoping a mobile Manufacturer will remove the Telco's firmware from the device. It can't happen as the device is managed by the Telco. :-) Nice idea but wishful thinking.

It's kind of like all the Optus, iiNet etc, "Fetch TV" boxes out there, They are landfill once the owner no longer subscribe to their service. I have picked up a good ten if them over time. I take the HDD out and bin the rest. A disgrace really. Luckily a few were retail so could be reset and used.

      • Sadly, I think you are right. I know that both the Roku Reddit subs I mentioned have Roku mods so their speed in getting my posts out of the public eye tells me they do not plan to be the heroes in this scenario. My initial hopes came from a well sourced report that Telstra reps went to America a couple of weeks ago to discuss their "agreement" with Roku. Knowing Roku is currently working at getting a foothold in the Aussie market made me hope they might save us

    • I find it hard to believe that they will brick all Telstra TV’s. There are customers who bought one with monthly repayments this year and it would be unlikely that Telstra will go down this route. Plus, their own website says this

Will my Telstra TV continue to work?
Absolutely. There are no changes to the Telstra TV you use today. We look forward to sharing how we’ll make your streaming experience better through our partnership with Fetch TV.

      • today

        • Yes, as in “no changes to the device that you have at home right now”. I don’t interpret it to mean “no changes to the device, for now”

          • @Anthonese: I switched to a fire cube and sold mine on eBay while it’s worth something, best of luck! Zero offer for me still

    • Do you have a copy or know someone who does please? Which forum exactly as Telstra has lots of them!

I am also looking for a copy of the letter that was sent to people who were told they were getting a free Fetch TV for $0.

I am in the middle of a massive argument with the rudest Complaints Manager as he says, Fetch TV Mini 4K are being given out randomly and I do not qualify.. I told him, all the Telstra TV boxes are shutting down but Telstra would send at least one Fetch TV Mini 4K to everyone who is registered on the system as having an active Telstra TV box, which I have, but I never use it, because even the Roku 3 boxes are JUNK. I have 12 Telstra TVs here, they used to just send a new one if you had any issue with the old ine.

So 4 x Gen, 4 x Gen 2 and 2 Gen 3, abd then Gold Tier members could get a free Gen 3 Box, and that stiopped, and a few months later ir started up again, that;s why I have 4 x Gen 3 of which configurered one of the Gen 3 Roku.Telstra TV boxes as I guessed Telstra would send Fetch TV mini 4K boxes to customers who are actiively using their Telstra TV.

What i reakky need is a document that says All Telstra customers who have an active service,

If someone has the letter from Telstra, maybe you can please PM / send ne the PDF and strip your details out first of course and a reference number please?

I've been told my a priority team member that this complaints' manager was being rude, telling me that only select Telstra TV users will get the free upgrade, when in fact eventually the the Telstra TV will stioo working,

If I can get a scanned copy with deal that someone out there could please send me a copy, minus any personal details, and send it to me via PM or post it as a shared file from OneDrive of Driopboz, our see if you can send ir via this forum but as a oruvate message, please, that would be fantastic and get this idio/clownt off my bak who is adamant that I do not get a free one,

Thank very much, Aplogies, I can't seem to type on my phone tonight,,,,

      Cheers, dman1
      Bendigo, Victoria

  • anyone have luck requesting one via the telstra app via chat?

    • The $0 Fetch Mini 4k upgrade offer is invitation only to selected and eligible customers. Expect to receive an email if you are selected, and you may complete the redemption in the My Telstra App by following the prompts.

    • Nope

    • Nope.

  • And
From time-to-time Telstra will make personalised offers to customers based on their current product holdings and usage. We do this to ensure the offer meets our customers' needs best. The free Fetch mini 4k upgrade offer is only for eligible group of customers as the offer best meets their current needs.

  • Sadly nothing for me either, Telstra TV user for a while and have NBN and mobile services with them.

Certainly know how to make us feel "special" don't they.

  • Just received an offer today. Had 2 quite old units that no longer use. So they must be slowly getting around.

  • +1

I have received the free fetch mini from Telstra. After quite a time setting it up I found it doesn't have the same apps as the Telstra tv that it is supposed to replace, i.e kayo Spotify.

Telstra says they will stop supporting the Telstra tv after a couple of months I think 29/4 /2023.

Will I still be able to use the Telstra tv after that date as it's much better than the fetch, which I have disconnected and put back in its box.

    • Fetch have mentioned on their Facebook page that kayo and binge might be coming to The fetch boxes. Presumably you have other devices for Spotify.

  • +1

I have a telstra tv which i got via points redemption with Telstra, and throught the chat they are saying only people who bought the telstra tv, will receive free fetch tv.

I do have mobile phone with them.

Telstra care factor for loyalty is 0.

    • Thanks - I'm pretty sure I got mine free as a Gold member or something - which might explain why there's no free upgrade for me.

Guess I may as well throw it in the e-waste recycling now.

    • I bought 2.
1 via monthly instalments on my bill.
1 via the Telstra shop where I paid in full.
I did not use any points.
1 of these I gave to my dad. He got the offer and we redeemed it.
the other one, I have not received any notification and cant get one.

  • Anyone know if you can onsell these? Or is locked to your Telstra account via the activation code they send?

  • This is unfair.
I have purchased 2 x Telstra TV Boxes. I gave 1 to my Dad who has been eligible to claim the free fetch box. He's not on my account.
I bought 1 for myself. I paid for that, I use it and I have not received the offer.
When I asked Telstra they say "selected customers" but they dont say how they "select" customers.

Pretty annoying. I'm going to end. up with a stupid piece of equipment that will no longer work but for some unknown reason I will have to pay for its replacement.

    • I agree. See my comment below

  • was a Telstra customer for 15 years and own 3 Telstra TV boxes. But I have no Fetch offer. I contacted them some weeks ago but they never bothered to reply after promising to do so. I contacted them again after seeing this thread and this time they told me I had no Telstra services and could not receive the offer because they needed my bank details for possible future transactions! I responded that many without current Telstra services had received the offer, they replied that :
"From time-to-time we make personalised offers to customers based on their current products and usage. We do this to ensure the offer best meets their needs.
This offer has only been made to an eligible group of customers as it best meets their current needs."
Be aware that Telstra plans to brick all it's TV Roku boxes later this year. This was revealed by Telstra 's Roku guy in the Whirlpool forum and then deleted within 24 hours, presumably because he got into trouble for revealing it
Telstra are clearly not to be trusted
