1v1 modem play at first , then 1994 - our first lan (IPX network 10 base 2 coax) squeezing the most we could out of our 4 mb of RAM and our Intel 286'S. The only bummer was we were limited to 4 player at a time (the game?) and of course we often had more present.

We rotated our lans to different houses in our group and a couple of the guys built levels based on the layouts of the house and property…..

Romero and Carmack should have stuck together. Carmack had the technical mind to build an engine and finish a game, but he lacked any sense of game design himself. Romero was a genius at game design, but couldn't build an engine to fit it or project manage to get his vision complete. They needed each other. Carmack should have given Romero some ownership stake in id to get him to stay.
