Buying Toy/Fake Gun from AliExpress

Got the answer I was looking for, The short answer: NO. Thanks, everyone.

Hi everyone, has anyone bought any toys or fake guns from outside Australia and shipped them here before?

I want to get some toy guns, specifically from Aliexpress. This isn't BB guns that are made so realistic and can hurt someone (I think BB guns are pretty much banned Australia-wide anyway), this is just a kid gun using Nerf darts.

Does anyone have experience buying from Aliexpress and have any problems with Custom before?

Here is the Aliexpress link.

    Importing imitation firearms to Australia
The Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956 (the Regulations) controls the importation of imitation firearms. Importers must obtain permission before bringing imitation firearms into Australia.

    Imitation firearms
Imitation firearms are defined as a copy or reproduction of a firearm, or an article that has the appearance of a firearm that could reasonably be taken to be a firearm. This can include goods such as ornaments, toys, and video game controllers. Appearance is regardless of the colour of the article.

Imitation does not include items that are capable of discharging projectiles by means compressed gas or explosive charge. However, it could include goods that discharge a projectile by other means for example, spring powered devices.

Imitation does include articles known as gel-blasters and NERF style articles that shoot gel balls or soft darts. It applies where an article has the appearance of a firearm and could reasonably be taken to be a firearm.

Imitation does not include deactivated firearms or blank-fire firearms. These goods are treated as firearms under the Regulations.

TLDR you'll need a special permission to import that particular item, since it's quite obviously modelled after a real fire arm (Colt M1911) and would be considered an imitation. Most states in Australia would also require you to have a permit to carry that around.

You won't have to do this if the gun has the looks and sillhouette of a toy, e.g a Nerf Maverick would not be an imitation of a real pistol.

Expect these to get inspected by customs coming from AliExpress anyway. My bubble guns were.

  • Got it, in sort, I won’t get it to avoid trouble 😂.

bloody hell, I know it's vogue to not let kids play with guns anymore but going the opposite way and giving them that feels… off.

Just buy a knockoff nerf gun instead if you want something cheap for your kids to play with. At least your neighbours won't report to the cops there's a kid running around with a handgun lol.

    • Lol true. I was born and grew up in Vietnam, and gun control there is as strict as it can get. However, being too close to China, smuggling toys/imitation guns is a matter of time. I played with toy guns a lot, and my parents would get criticized for letting me play with them, saying I would get violent lol. I never understand people saying that playing with them will turn you into a monster. I mean, wtf is the difference between those and Nerf guns? Besides that, some bad people will use imitation guns for ill intentions.

      • "some bad people will use imitation guns for ill intentions."

Which is the probably the primary thought that should have gelled before you even asked.

Some people might turn fantasy into reality. Nerf guns look nothing like real guns.

Besides that, some bad people will use imitation guns for ill intentions.

Yes, so better not let it be the norm by letting imitation guns be easily accessible.

        • yep, that is why I never say I'm against the restriction. What I'm saying is people think playing with guns will make them go wild or violent, but I get your point.

Don't accidentally walk into a bank (or with your kid) carrying one of these.

    lol

You can purchase similar gel pistols locally for around $30.
What you can and can't do with them varies by state.

    • I have seen them, but they look too close to the real one, which might get me into trouble. Also, I'm in NT, so I believe those imitations will be strictly prohibited anyway.

I like the one in Aliexpress because It operates like a real gun but with a toyish look.

      • Good luck with anything besides Nerf.

      • I think you have a serious problem.

Either join the local gun club, like sensible people do, or (pre purchase) drop into your local cop shop and repeat your comments in this thread. I'd love to hear their response.

Gel blasters are the ultimate bogan xmas gift for kids.

  • Unless you’re in QLD, this is a great way to get a firearms charge.

  • AFP is now watching.

Nope, even the one you linked to is banned.

You would have more luck finding them on eBay or Fartbook that have stock in Australia already and try and run the gauntlet with local postage.

Years ago I tried importing a clear body rubber suction dart blaster and even that was seized. It was completely clear so you could see its inner workings, came with bright orange darts and was not shaped like any real hand gun. I got a letter sent to me for the AFP and border security that the weapon was seized and a copy of the relevant legislation about the importation of firearms, both real and imitation.

  • Order it with a fake name and just see if it rocks up, overthinking it
