      Four HDD's :)

so… is this like a NAS without the networking features? Why not just buy a NAS like one of these for not much more? Or a HP N40L?

    • the intention is to put an esata cable on this and then hook it to a microserver

you can then use it to expand the capabilities of your microserver

This quad dock is handy for me as I have about 10x hard drives worth of storage on them and at the moment I only have a dual dock which doesn't always boot and you cant power each drive on individually and the drives get quite hot because there are no fans.

This is a way for me to keep all my storage on the drives I have until I can afford a home server.

what a rip off lol =

  • Looking at the camelx3 graph, now definitely wasn't the best time to post this item.

Doubt they were ever $211.99 as well, that's just a number to make you feel like you're getting a discount bigger than you actually are. The most persistent price looks more like $140ish so the saving is closer to -$4.

    • Pretty cool tool, I wasn't aware of this one.

Although, its only $15 more then the cheapest it has ever been and that was more then a year ago.

I can understand that its not as much of a deal as I initially thought, but someone may be interested.

At this price, I think an N40L would be a much better investment given the greater flexibility it provides. The only thing this has going for it is the USB3 and I guess lower power consumption compared to the microserver.

  • I find it quite expensive, especially if its 4 hdd sharing one eSata cable, speeds would be limited. Plus, it may be better if there were a raid feature to this station.

It's a DOCK. It's not something that you leave drives connected to permanently.

Not many people seem to understand what a Hot Swap dock is. Think of a portable hard drive, but without the enclosure. Just a bare drive. Plug in the drive, do your backup or whatever, then remove drive again.

Having multiple ports makes it heaps easier to move things around and sort them out.

That said, I'm in the process of getting rid of my external docks and adding front-loading HotSwap bays to my computer(s). The (bare) Hard Drives slide in just like a very fat floppy drive - Awesome!

      • My antec case has 4 of those (or something similar). Friggin awesome.

      • I understood it was a dock. but for $160, it seemed too much. On average i but my hdd docking station $20-30 each. I just emphasizing its price.

  • Please tell me the drives slide all the way in and aren't left exposed?

Its a dock so they are exposed. It's not an enclosure. This unit is made for hot swapping multiple drives in and out frequently like I do.

  • made after a few http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81847
it could be a good idea? :P

These would be handy for IT Technicians but much better solutions for people at home.

    • or for people with 12tb worth of p0rn? who knows? whatever rocks your boat. :)

is rather expensive for what it is, i have a number of usb3 dual-docks, and cant really see a good reason for owning a quad one like this when for the same price you could buy 5 of the dual-docks (10 drives).

The power buttons sound nice, but in reality they'd probably just annoy me cause i tend to use mine in my server and being able to remote power on is probably not an option im guessing.

the eSata bit is perhaps more interesting because the dual-docks i have only allow one drive on the esata connection and well sata is nicer then usb, thats for sure… but not for $160
