[Android] Free - PDF to Word Converter Pro (Was $7.49) @ Google Play Store

8215

As spotted on HUKD

Cool free app here! No more converting online, then working out where it downloaded too.

PDFs are incredibly versatile, yet notoriously challenging to modify. But there's no need to manually copy text from a PDF. With the power of OCR (Optical Character Recognition), even scanned pages become editable.

Introducing the premier PDF to Word converter. This tool faithfully reproduces the formatting of your PDFs – think fonts, paragraphs, lists, tables, and columns – right in a Word document. Once converted, you can easily edit, extract content, and even re-export as a new PDF. The best part? No registration, no login, and no need to share your contact details.

Enjoy!

You may find a use for this
    https://www.pdfgear.com/

Quote: Read, edit, convert, merge, and sign PDF files across devices, for completely free and without signing up.

NOTE: It wants to phone home for every option you use, so block outwards traffic.

    • +2

Ty! PC noob here - can you be bothered writing a step-by-step to block outwards traffic?

      • +2

I use Malwarebytes Windows firewall control (WFC) https://www.binisoft.org/
After installation, you need to tweak a couple of settings.

        1) Click [Profile] and choose Medium (so it will ask questions when programs want to access internet).
        2) Click [Notifications] and ensure the dialogue 'Display Notifications' has the green dot.
        3) Check [Options] to ensure the option to start with Windows is checked.

If you use WFC, stand by to be overwhelmed by the number of questions is asks. A good guide for a newbie would be 'is it signed' (shows in the pop-up). Generally speaking Microsoft things are safe but Microsoft does a lot of snooping. As you gain experience, research whatever process is requesting access.

After the questions settle, is the time to install pdfgear (but it is not critical). Simply block whatever access PDFgear requests (that will also shut down its AI, which I haven't tested yet). I am still very early into experimentation with it. My current pdf preference is Foxit reader (if you try Foxit, read the installation question carefully - it tries to get you to install a trail version).

Tinywall is an alternative to WFC that has/had a good reputation - https://tinywall.pados.hu/. It works without the annoying popups. It is a long time since I used it. You may need to check how well it is maintained (with regular updates). As always, instructions for most things are on YouTube
        TinyWall - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuUhT_JoAiU
        WFC - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iqBvyf6vwU

        Whenever it updates, check again.

    • Asking for a friend - how do we block the outward traffic?

        https://netguard.me/

        Install it via Fdroid https://f-droid.org/en/
It's more featured than the version on Google Play

        • Just installed PDF to Word Converter Pro and used to restrict network access with netguard.
Its do to work without network.
That means it used to upload your pdf to the app server for converting.
Use it with caution only if you trust your personal files to them. Or convert pdf to Word and vice versa with Google docs.

I've uninstalled it as it appears that it can't convert PDF without sending it out to another Site for processing..

  • +22

Negging the deal as it siphons out private data

    • +3

      Agreed.

So many shaddy “free” apps keep getting posted here.

    • Negging the deal as it siphons out private data

You're preaching to the choir. Nowadays its a given and the norm.

      • +1

Sending data to 3rd party doesn't have to be the norm. Don't support such shady practices!

    • Upvoted. Good neg

    • Yeap

    • Agreed

  • Arguably takes away more value than provides.

  • I just rename the file /s

    • +5

The app sends your PDF out to an unknown (dodgy?) Web site for "processing". You have no control over this.
In other words, PDF>Word Conversion does not take place on your phone!
I'd give this 200 negs if I could.

      • +2

Still useful to convert pdfs that contain no personal data, for example my vintage adult magazines collection.

        • Care to upload your vintage collection in pdf format?

  • +2

New app with no reviews? Dodgy af

  • +6

Dev had had 8 apps on store, 5 removed already…

edit: in a Span of 4 months.

    • +10

Lol and this "deal" has 62 upvotes 🤡

Seriously people, stop posting shit apps, stop up voting them and most importantly stop installing them.

    • Red flags. Big privacy concerns here

  • +2

Junk app… Word can convert pdf to Word docx.

  • +2

If used on document with important info this maybe one of the most expensive apps you could use. Down vote for safety.

  • +1

You can just open PDF files in Word nowadays (note it’s not perfect!)

  • +1

seems to require an internet connection. waste of storage space

    • +3

🤦 using Chrome (and the associated tracking that comes with it) is not the same as uploading a copy of a personal document directly to some unknown server for them to do who knows what with.

        • Chrome tracks you (which I already said), yes.

But that’s not the same as collecting actual personal documents.

          “Come on man”

            • @Shakalaka:

Was referencing the very first post in this comment section

See the “reply” button? If you click that your comment will appear under what you’re actually talking about.

about blocking unwanted outbound traffic due to privacy concerns.

There’s a big difference between allowing Chrome to track you and allowing any random outbound traffic.

It’s perfectly reasonable to be okay with using Chrome, but not having any random program send outbound traffic anywhere.

You just created some silly "ackshually

Mate, you’re the one who started this nonsense with your “ackshually” Chrome phones home too comment.

                • @Shakalaka:

I can start a new 'thread' if I want to pursue a different line of discussion.

You can do what you want. But you're the one who said " Was referencing the very first post in this comment section".

How do you expect people to know your referencing another comment if you don't actually reference the comment. lol.

                  Cool. I strongly disagree.

Can you really not see how someone might be ok with Chrome just tracking their browsing but not okay with malware getting access to your PC and uploading potentially anything from their PC?

                    • @Shakalaka:

I expect all the comments previous to mine would have been read by anyone reading mine.

People don't read comments like a novel, beginning to end. Each comment is expected to be a separate stand alone thought. That's exactly why there's a "reply" button to create a thread. I suggest using it in the future.

Why is this an app in the first place if the app itself does not do the convertion?

  • +1

    If you using windows

You can convert pdf to word directly by dragging out pdf file onto Word shortcut file.
(Make a word shortcut on desktop, then drag pdf on that shortcut, it should then say open with word, and convert to word soon afterwards)

But it can be bit iffy at times like e.g. for long PDFs etc. Nevertheless built in basics.

If you want best its ofcourse gonna be adobe pdf to word converter online for free too ( just don't sign in otherwise they ask for payment)

  • Avoid.

  • thanks Op, just installed and uninstalled and installed then uninstalled. Only converted one page of bank statement and one page of medical blood test result. You couldn't do much with that sort od document as a 3rd party.

  • I concur with several others' comments regarding this app, even though it is a temporary freebie - I would be wary of using this particular app, given the past track record of the app's developer, and what the app's PDF-to-Word conversion process actually entails.

There is an interesting alternative worth checking out - Stirling PDF

It is a web-based PDF tool that stands out amongst many PDF manipulation apps & online websites that are freemium/paid and proprietary:

From the Stirling PDF Github repo's README

This is a powerful locally hosted web based PDF manipulation tool using docker that allows you to perform various operations on PDF files, such as splitting merging, converting, reorganizing, adding images, rotating, compressing, and more. This locally hosted web application started as a 100% ChatGPT-made application and has evolved to include a wide range of features to handle all your PDF needs.

Stirling PDF makes no outbound calls for any record keeping or tracking.

All files and PDFs are either purely client side, in server memory only during the execution of the task or within a temporay file only for execution of the task. Any file which has been downloaded by the user will have already been deleted from the server by that time.

  • +1

Don't download and use this dodgy app!

  • +1

It is likely that the app doesn't do anything locally and sends it to a server. I'd rather use Libreoffice on a PC to convert between the formats. If all you want to do is sign PDFs on your phone, Google drive and WhatsApp do that out of the box. These companies already have all your data any way :|
