Switched from Optus to Superloop

Hi, was doing some searching here and didn't have any confirmation from any previous post, so thought I'd help out any fellow OB that want to ditch the garbage Optus to something else. I've been with Optus for over 25 years and finally decided to pull the pin after my recent experience with the "free turbocharge" for the month of Dec. Not only did it not work, but the customer service I got to try resolve the issue was so bad, I decided I rather pay more and leave.

I'm on HFC and switched from Optus to Superloop a few days ago (Sunday). Took less than 15 mins. NBN modem turned off for a few mins, back on and I was up and running. Still using the Optus Sagemcom Modem, didn't need to change any settings or anything. Everything went really smoothly for me, so I guess I must be one of the lucky ones. I've read heaps of other reviews with bad experiences but decided to take a chance since it was cheapest for 1000/50 plan. Really happy with the new speed I'm getting now, but it's probably more than what I really need, so might downgrade after the 6 months discount is over.

So yeah for those wondering, YES you can use your current Optus Sagecom modem with Superloop, no configuration required.

21/12/23 UPDATE! So recently found out the Optus modem is either capped or can't upload faster than 20. Didn't notice it when I was on 50/20 with Optus. Now I'm on 1000/50, noticed the up was only around 20. Connected my PC directly to the NBN modem and speed was around 48 up. So changed the router and getting the correct speed. So maybe overall it's worth just changing modem as well and not use the shithouse Optus one.

  • Good job, I would change my isp the second I find a cheaper deal - true ozbargain style.

Also, about router compatibility, from my experience as well, most routers work fine with all the providers. Its just that your new isp will try to get u to purchase a new one through them to make a sale. They make a point that they can't help if you use a byo router, which is ok because they may not want to troubleshoot other routers than the ones they are offering. I guess it depends on nbn technology that you have, depending on that some routers might not work.

    • I used to churn NBN deals, but I hit some truly terrible ones with zero support and slow speeds at peak hour. One had put a $300 'loan' on my credit record and never removed it after I left - it wasn't for hardware either because I bought my own modem and was on month to month.

Stuck with superloop since then, not worth the hassle.

  • +1

Superloop uses IPOE as does Optus. No username or Password.
So other than perhaps needing a reboot will work with most modems/routers.

  • 25 years - did you have/use an Optusnet email address when you quit them ?

    • +1

Yes I started with Optus Cable then moved to NBN. Used my optusnet email as my primary email for everything. But a few years ago, they pissed me off so much I started changing over all my registrations (bills, websites, etc) to my iCloud email instead and monitored it for around 2 years before confirming nothing besides my optus bills were going to the Optus email. So, this time when they ticked me off, I could impulsively leave right away as I did without needing to worry emails going the optus address anymore.

  • I've been with Optus 20+ years also and tried to get Fibre upgrade to NBN after it became available at my address. Tried to do the fibre upgrade through them and it was nothing short of frustration. 9+ hrs. of live chat that literally went nowhere, bounced from salesperson to salesperson trying to upsell and convert me to Optus 5G NBN when I wanted FTTP upgrade. After 9hrs of chat attempts and maybe 10 or so different sales people I just gave up and signed with ABB, took me 5mins to fill out the form and click submit. Something fundamentally wrong at Optus if they cant even process a simple application request like that.

    • Asked them to keep my $30 loyalty discount. Told them I'd just leave. They didn't care…

      • Gladys arrogance has infected the whole company.

    • You are lucky you were able to talk to so many sales people. I went to Telstra store and they said I had to wait 2 hours before I can talk to the first person - I wanted to get a 5G plan!

  • Try factory resetting your modem - it will likely have a shaper profile from optus on it

    • I have tried that, the modem is locked with Optus firmware. A lot of settings are greyed out and can't be changed. Either way, I got a new router now, so doesn't matter too much for me. Just letting others know who are looking to switch over.

  • I did exactly the same thing! Yep Optus modem is throttled, but worked still.
