About the app

A new app for people serious about becoming fluent in Japanese, from the maker of Nihongo: a modern Japanese dictionary.

Nihongo Lessons is based off the excellent Japanese Level Up (Jalup) series, and is made to help all levels of learners.

  • If you're a complete beginner, the app starts you off by teaching you to write the Japanese alphabets hiragana and katakana, and then quickly starts building your vocabulary and grammar fundamentals.

  • If you're at an intermediate level, you can jump into content that will help you grow your Japanese grammar, vocabulary, and listening skills more efficiently than ever before.

  • If you're an advanced learner diving into the world of native content or studying for JLPT N1, Nihongo Lessons can help fill in the gaps in your knowledge with vocabulary and grammar pulled directly from real manga.

Instead of a traditional textbook, everything in Nihongo Lessons is in a flashcard format. Flashcards are easier to take in, easier to know how much to learn and how often to review, and simplify the mountain of information you need to absorb. Each flashcard introduces one new sentence for you to understand, and every new sentence introduces exactly one new word, grammar point, or concept. This keeps you constantly moving forward in your learning journey - never bored, never overwhelmed.

  • Learn to write hiragana and katakana, the main alphabets of the Japanese language.

  • Progress from beginner to fluent across 7000 handcrafted sentences, each introducing a single new word or concept.

  • Listen to sentences spoken out loud by a professional voice actor.

  • Advanced Spaced Repetition (SRS) to help you retain everything you've learned for the long-term.

  • Nihongo Lessons doesn’t just plop a fun game on top of the language. It engages the brain’s natural urge to solve problems by making learning the language itself the game.

That RRP seems pretty high for just a “beginner” deck compared to BunPro and/or WaniKani which go up to higher levels too

    • I agree. RRP it's inflated.

    • +1

I agree, the app is only a year old and there are barely any reviews….
I'll pass on having 'part' of something for free when the additional and arguably essential add-ons are $300+

Lifetime WaniKani and BunPro on sale are almost around the corner at new years!

        • Thanks Commodore, I always enjoyed your tapes!

Creator of Nihongo Lessons here, happy to provide a little more context.

The app is only a year old, but the content has been available as part of Japanese Level Up (Jalup) for about 10 years now, and has lots of really happy users. So I hope you'll give it a shot before dismissing it. 🙂 I've been working with the creator of Japanese Level Up to wrap his content up in a really nice iOS app, with built-in SRS for the flashcards, linking between words, and integration with my dictionary app Nihongo. You can check out https://japaneselevelup.com/ for more details on the philosophy behind the content, and user testimonials.

The price is high, but the content really is excellent. Give it a shot, see if you like it. In addition to the full free beginner deck, the first 10 days of each of the more advanced courses are also available for free (not just today, that's always) so you can try some of the other content and see if you like it as well.

As for the level of the content, I'm not as familiar with BunPro, but I'd say it's comparable to the level that Wanikani goes up to. Wanikani is more focused on kanji though, whereas this is a little more focused on vocab and grammar.

Happy to answer any other questions you may have as well!

Thanks for your answer. Is it possible to make this app work on earlier version of iOS?

        • The app supports iOS 16.0+. I don't have any plans at the moment to make it work on earlier versions at the moment, unfortunately. 😕

Is it possible to upgrade to iOS 16 on your device?

          • +1

@nihongoapp: Mine is on iOS 15 and its not possible to upgrade.

Its interesting that most demanding games like Genshin Impact still supports iOS11 and up. They probably want to allow as many players as possible

Edit: just looked at BunPro, they support iOS 15 and up, plus lifetime IAP is only AU$60, lots of reviews too so I’m gonna check them out

@bheart: Yeah, games are actually some of the easiest because they don't really use any of the native platform stuff, they're all written using cross-platform game engines that maintain support for a long time. Since this app was new last year, it made sense to start fresh on the latest platform, and not have to support any baggage from previous OS's.

              Anyway, no worries. 🙂

              • @nihongoapp: You should try having to support iOS 12 in a commercial context.
Even if you use SwiftUI that only requires iOS 13+

To be honest though, looking at the full course cost of $500 or so, alot of people are going to be questioning it.

          • +1

@nihongoapp: I was hoping to download this but can't as I'm on iOS 15.7 😞
Guess I have to look elsewhere…

  • I don’t have any other language skills or even tried, how would this go to give me the basics for a trip to Japan next year?

    • +1

You can definitely start from zero with this app, and it will teach you from the ground up. But I will say, this app is aimed primarily at people really interested in investing time in learning the language. It starts with teaching you the Japanese alphabets, and will start going into the basics of grammar pretty quick. The early courses are more about giving you the foundations for learning the language, than teaching you the phrases you'll need when traveling.

Hope that helps! Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions.

      • Thanks, will take a look and see where it sits with other information out there

  • How do I unlock days 11-100? Do I have to pay ? I assumed the whole begginers deck is free.

    • +1

Click unlock then Go to beginner and click 1000 cards..

    • +1

As BA said, there should be an "Unlock" button above decks 11-100 which will take you to a page where you can purchase decks. The Beginner deck should be set to $0.00 until the end of the day.

If you're having any issues getting it to work, don't hesitate to reach out to me at [email protected]

      • unlock then shows loading forever

        • If you're having issues feel free to send me an email at [email protected] with a screenshot of what you're seeing, I'll make sure to get it fixed for you.

If I was a app developer I would support the most oldest iOS version possible to start with. I don’t agree with the “latest updates firmware version only”. Not everyone likes updating their phones to slow it down or get their battery compromised to keep up with the heavy performance that new features demand.

    • Yeah, I totally understand that, and in an ideal world I would definitely like to support older versions. Unfortunately, it's a tradeoff. Every version of iOS has different quirks and different bugs to work around, so supporting old versions means a lot more testing. And especially with a new technology like SwiftUI, which this app is built with, new iOS versions can take some tasks that would take hours of work to support in an old version, and make them easy enough to implement in minutes.

As a solo indie developer, I have to be careful about where I put my time. Supporting older versions of iOS would mean less time for new features, and/or less time to fix bugs that affect users running the latest iOS.

So generally, I choose to support the latest two versions, currently iOS 16 and 17. There's no perfect answer, but I think that's a good middle ground, at least for a project with just a single developer.
