Best Laptop for Multiple Uses, Tabs, Photography, Editing, Web Design - Budget $1500

Need advice for a new laptop!

I study and work primarily from it so have multiple tabs open at once as well as constant downloading of Uni papers. I also do a lot of photoshop projects and design projects so I need something with fast speeds, can handle lots of applications and doesn't overheat or crash.

Have used Dell and HP so far and much prefer Dells, but open to suggestions!

TIA

    Budget?

If on a budget apple reconditioned M1 mac book pro ; if rich, M3 mac book pro

    • Thoughts on Metabox? - Good, I would recommend for sure based on your use case.

Thoughts on those specs? - I would try and go more if you can with your Budget. i7 or i9, with 32GB RAM minimum.

Thanks so much for your input, will look into those specs a bit more.

  • Pleae include whether you're committed to Windows or will consider Mac OS; and do you prefer new over pre-owned?

  • WIndows for sure, and new

  • We are narrowing it down, could folks please evaluate the metabox detailed below, against this recently posted and still available deal?

The Metabox laptop is a good value for the price, especially for gamers and content creators. It has a capable RTX 4050 6GB GPU, 16GB RAM, and a fast 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. However, it might run hot under heavy load and the FHD display might not be ideal for everyone. You can easily upgrade the RAM to 32GB and expect around 4-5 hours of battery life for light tasks.

      • Hot under heavy load was a concern

I'm hoping modern graphics cards run at low power when not under heavy load

Any chance you can confirm ram is user replaceable? I'd rather pay an extra 50 for a stick of sodimm and do it myself, rather than pay metabox 200 for the same…

I don't believe you can, if you do, you might avoid Warranty. I have had to get a warranty fix on 1 laptop I bought for a family member, but that was 1 in about 10 I have bought for various people and work.

Hot under heavy load was a concern

Some do get a bit hot, but as long as you aren't using it on your lap, you'll be fine.

    • All laptops get warm under heavy load - think about how little space there is for thermals.

Even a M series apple laptop gets hot if you push it enough.

      Why does it matter?

        You asked…

The following story should be taken as a serious warning against use of a laptop computer in a literal sense. The patient, a previously healthy 50-year-old scientist and the father of two children, had been writing a report one evening in his home. Sitting comfortable in an armchair, he had placed his laptop computer on his lap while writing for about 1 h. The next day he noticed irritation and oedema of his penile prepuce. Furthermore, the ventral part of his scrotal skin had turned red, and there was a blister with a diameter of about 2 cm. These findings were verified when I saw the patient 1 day later. There were no signs of phimosis or balanitis. The patient recalled that, while sitting 2 days earlier with his computer on his lap, he occasionally had felt heat and a burning feeling on his lap and proximal thigh, a sensation that was relieved at least temporarily when the computer was moved slightly.

        • OMG he seared his testicles

    • You have given extremely limited requirements in the original post, so this thread has turned into the usual 'recommend a generic nice laptop' conversation.

The programs that you use may or may not make use of the discrete graphics card (which in the above spec you are definitely paying for). Look up which programs and which functions in those programs will use a graphics card.

For example, this is what Photoshop will use one for:
