Still waiting for a deal on a meta quest 3.

    • +3

Hopefully Santa will answer your wish lol

    • I was waiting for like 2 months and finally bought it full price. Just need to something nice for Christmas. Maybe next black friday 🤔

      • Getting like that for me too

    • +1

      wait for meta quest 4

  • +4

I just got the Quest 3 a week ago and it can already play Steam games wirelessly via the inbuilt Air Link software so I'm not sure what this extra Steam Link software adds?

    • +13

This is different. It bypasses Airlink. The entire wireless connection is controlled by Steam Link.

      • +6

Potentially better, given that for games using the SteamVR or OpenXR API they wouldn’t benefit from the Oculus tweaks in AirLink, but only if Steam add enhancements of their own.
I would say it probably isn’t worse than airlink and may be more convenient for Steam.

        • Airlink drains system resources

          • @KenDiaMoi: There’s a lot going under on under the hood like predictive stuff

        • +1

Through Airlink I was getting some pretty bad freezing up, but thats been massively reduced with Steamlink (though this is probably more related to my Wi-Fi 5 and far distance from the router).
Only issue I've had with Steamlink so far is the haptic feedback when hitting blocks in Beat Saber just doesnt work for about 1/5 of the blocks? This wasnt an issue with Airlink for me, but I assume its just some busted functionality in this early version of Steamlink. At the very least, performance wise, its been much better for me .

    • +1

      Same, anyone know?

    • It's a more straight to only Steam to play steam games/apps where as Airlink can do other stuff like play oculus games and do desktop things.

Both work well for me, more options the better!

    • In some ways the biggest thing is that it’s easy to run into problems with these systems, so if one doesn’t work well for you another might. This bypasses the Oculus PC software though (no need to even have it installed) and should have better performance and greater convenience for SteamVR games.

Virtual Desktop can do most of the same things and more, but costs money.

  • +3

Wished this was doner sooner as I bought Virtual Desktop on my Quest 2 a few weeks ago, to play VR games on Steam.

    • You could already do that just fine with Airlink or whatever that's in the Oculus application. Virtual Desktop hasn't been needed for a while, and they stopped support back in like 2020 I think, maybe try get a refund?

      • They have AV1 support, doesnt make a huge difference tho, although it also acts like a video player which is nice, so you dont need something like DeoVR

      • +5

They haven't stopped supporting it at all. The dev is very active.

        • +1

Only the mobile and quest version not the steam version.

      • I did not know about Airlink until now.

      • They haven't stopped support, they released an update for the Quest 2 and 3 maybe two weeks ago.

Virtual Desktop works better for me than Airlink.

    • +1

VD is a lot better for Q2 and especially Q3 currently.

    • When I got my Quest 3 I saw so many youtubers pushing Virtual Desktop so I bought it and found it pointless for me since Airlink works perfectly fine, got it refunded within an hour.

  • Shows unavailable for me.

  • +1

So does this mean you no longer need to install the Oculus Desktop app at all if you just want to play Steam games?

    • +5

You can play all your Steam VR Games with the Steam Link. It has just been released. It will get even better with time. Very promising.

    • +3

I’m also curious about this. I’m sick of having to terminate a bunch of OVRServer.exe and stuff like that at startup all the time. Meta have 0 respect of my privacy so I don’t want their software on my computer at all

  • Thanks. Got virtual desktop and airlink previously. Steamlink should make it easier. Got meta 2.

    • +2

Installed and tested. Works really well. Just need steam running on pc and creates on quest a code to insert on PC.

  • Wait you couldn't do this before? I thought the benefit of that thing, was the ability to /also/ play PC games?

    • Not with SteamLink, that's why people in here are talking about AirLink (runs a little bit like SteamLink, but using Occulus software instead of Steam software)

    • As per the previous comments above, this removes a middleman between your Quest and the Steam VR game.

    • Only through airlink (which needed the mwta app on pc) or virtual desktop (which need its streamer on the pc)

  • So you need a computer that can actually play the games to play on it? Asking as someone that has a first gen Surface Go.

    • +1

for steam games yes, you can play native quest games without pc

  • this is a game changer finally

I will still use my link cable though for beat saber but for fps will definitely use the new steam link.

  • +2

Subnautica VR, using the Okabintaro mod (adds hand controls), sitting in a spinning chair using wirless via the Steam Link is amazing.

If you have a copy of Subnautica and a Quest 2/3 you should try it!!!

  • This could be a game changer. Controller support?

    • -1

It does nothing virtual desktop doesn't already do.

      • +3

Tried it tonight and I reckon runs smoother then virtual desktop.

      • +3

It's free and seems to be smoother with more consistency to me.

  • -5

    This isn't a deal…

    • +2

      Yeah it’s a BIG deal

      Jk

    • +1

You'll live mate, I believe in ya

    • +1

Yeah it really isn't, not like it was paid and went free. A good product don't get me wrong, but this ain't a deal. What's to stop people from just putting steam as a long running deal on here. Or software updates.

  • fired it up on my q2 last night and was a bit stuttery in Red Matter, havent tried other games - might need a bit of a tweak
Virtual desktop seems better as it offers more options but can be hit and miss with network latency

  • Here's the link to this meta quest app: https://www.meta.com/en-gb/experiences/5841245619310585/

  • Got Q3, airlink working. Can't get this to run. Any ideas? It pairs but doent connect.

    • Had similar issues previously with my Q2. Rebooted Q2 and pc and seemed to connect again.

      • nah been a dozen reboots and even re-pair. Still the same.
I'm not sure what to check. Can't see any firewall ittues etc.

        • Perhaps airlink taking priority? Disable at startup or close in task manager

          • @Mikael: This is from a forum.

So I JUST got mine working after deleting and reinstalling steam and trying everything else. What fixed it was simple. Open steam on your PC, then find steam VR app in your library (you can search for it in the search bar)

Right click. Select properties. Select betas. Then in the drop down where it currently says "none" choose "beta- Steam VR Beta Update"

You can hit the X after that to close the pop up window and then let it finish downloading. I then restart steam after force closing in task manager and BOOM steam VR finally launches in air link for me

            • @Mikael: Thanks but that did not seem to fix it either. Where are there active forums for the quest?

reddit seems mostly dead with many posts having no replies and just promotional posts. The actual meta forums seem to not have much activity. Only very old posts have replies and new posts are empty.

Actual meta support bring you through a rabbit hole where you can't actually select these software issues you can only select hardware problems. And then when you send a message through WhatsApp it has an auto reply and then you are ignored for a week.

              • @furyou: Just used Google. Sorry it didn't work.
They prob ball it over to steam and vice versa.
Worst scenario is to reset quest and see? Tried other device running steam?. If you got old laptop or something to link with? Or run up a VM. I know, a pain. Ran out of ideas.
