Agent Access to Property during a Vacate Period

Hi guys, I’ve checked fair trading and the tenancy act NSW but can’t find a clear answer.

We have provided 4 weeks notice that we are vacating our rental property and we have received an email tonight advising that there will be an open home schedule for Wednesday.

How much notice are they legally meant to provide?

  • one week I believe from memory. you are legally obliged to provide access but NOT advertising (billboards and the such)

To an open inspection? A bit awkward innit. You read about some inspections with people lining up around the block, could be hundreds of strangers going through OPs home.

Only in the last 14 days with reasonable notice given.

I'd be more concerned about strangers coming into your home and insurance not covering you as they have been "invited" in.

Consider asking the agent if their public liability will cover any loss or damage to your possessions. Think along the lines of grubby footprints on carpets.

And then the agent will make a deduction from OP's rental bond to clean up the mess.

      • they cant make a deduction without justified cause.

Will never understand wearing outside shoes into the home.

  • Taking the law out if it for a moment, what do you think is reasonable? The landlord obviously would want to schedule an open home as soon as possible to give them the best chance of securing someone close to when you move out. If it's next Wednesday or the following one, does it make a big difference to you?

Normally it wouldn’t bother me but my wife is heavily pregnant and due any day now.. takes longer to get the house in presentable state when it is half boxed

Why are you wasting your time getting the house presentable?

consider telling them it would be in their best interest if they wait
