  • This would literally be a perfect little external storage for my iPhone 15 Pro, if only it had the write speeds to record 4K60 Log footage directly onto the storage

    • +1

So which one similar to this can support the 4k60?

  • +1

Does it work with all iPhone with USB-C connection?

      • +1

        It is problematic

        Why?

Was disappointed when I discovered that a simple phone case was enough to render that a problem.

So you're disappointed at this USB drive and think it is problematic because it follows the USB C standard of a plug that's 6.65mm +/- 0.10mm long and won't work because of your case.

Maybe you need a case that allows a standard USC C plug to be inserted.

        • +3

          I don't think it's the plug that's the issue…

            • +1

              @seamonkey:

Samsung should've foreseen that people wanted this for their phones and thought about what that meant for their own device/s

They probably did, for a nanosecond.
Because they would have realised straight away that it's impossible to make something that's compatible with the millions of different cases worldwide that exist.

And more importantly there's an actual standard that governs the USB C connector so maybe you should ask your case manufacturer to make a case that's compatible with this particular USB drive so you can use it.

          • +1

            @seamonkey:

What a wild thought that a flash drive made by Samsung that likely many people wish to plug into their Samsung phones

What's more wild is you expect a Samsung USB C drive to plug into a Samsung phone when there is a case that probably isn't made by Samsung attached to the phone which Samsung should have designed their USB C drive around to fit.

            Makes complete sense.

              • +1

                @seamonkey:

Maybe they could simply include a mini cable,

That's a great idea, more electronic waste just to satisfy a small minority of people who want to plug the drive into their phone that has a case on it that Samsung doesn't know about, just so the minority don't have to remove the case first.

I go back to my first point, a case is hardly an unusual modification

But modifying a flash drive in a way to work with all cases on earth while still maintaining strength, design, usability etc of the flash drive isn't an unusual modification?

Maybe case manufacturers should have a bigger hole at the bottom.
They would use less plastic making the case so could increase profitability.

                That's the way solution.
Why don't you just make the hole in your case bigger?

        • +3

It's not about needing a non standard USB-C plug. The plug itself isn't the issue - it's the design of the flash drive case.

Typically they include a small extension from the main body of the flash drive, to where the USB-C plug itself starts. This allows use without removing a phone case.

I have owned various flash drives like this, including a Samsung one. If you Google various USB drives, they typically have a design that allows plugging in without removing a phone case.

It's fair enough to remind people that this drive doesn't have that feature, and thus won't suit all users.

        • Plenty have a longer tongue because they appreciate that it is a good feature to reach through phone cases.
          Compare this model for example.
          https://www.amazon.com.au/SanDisk-Ultra-Drive-USB-C-SDDDC3-0…

I don't know why you are so aggressive about defending a case incompatible USB which has been a known issue for the history of mobile phones.

If a cable or drive has a short tongue and fat neck then it is going to be a problem with phones and should generally be avoided unless use case is known to never encounter phone cases.

        • Update on the case situation. I got the drive delivered today.
It works well with the a standard/official Samsung case installed which adds about 1.5mm-2mm.
I've had some accessories not plug in properly
But this is not one of them.

      • +4

Mate, it looks like you are the case of the issue in this case.

        • Yo Bboy, re:

'Mate, it looks like you are the case [sic] of the issue in this case.'

I disagree 100%. Samsung should absolutely have done a little bit of pre-release testing, and had they done that it would have been almost instantly brought to their attention that there was an obvious problem; which if I understand correctly, is that this Samsung USB-C drive can't be plugged directly into a Samsung phone unless you remove said phone from its case.

If that is so then it is a major flaw, and I can't help but think it was some sort of design fault/unforeseen error/epic fail. This might be why these things are now being sold comparatively cheaply.

What's the bet that the next product like this that Samsung creates/releases onto the market can be plugged directly into a Samsung phone, without a need to remove that phone from its case?

          • +1

            @GnarlyKnuckles:

it would have been almost instantly brought to their attention that there was an obvious problem

The only problem is that of people who expect a USB drive to plug into their phone when they are using a case, without having to remove the case.

The little silver connector you can see in the deal photo is made to an actual standard, Samsung can't make it longer.

The thickness of cases and hole to plug things into the USB C port isn't standard and it's hard to design things to work on 100% of unstandardised things

    • +1

Yes I have a 128GB model and it works well with my iPhone 15. The only issue is my phone is in a Quad Lock case, the cutout for the USB-C port is small, so it is tight to fit this flash drive in. Something to be aware of for people who are using their iPhones in a case, check the size of the USB-C cutout in your case.

  • +2

Take the speeds with a massive grain of salt. But given the size (tiny) and the reported speeds, it looks good.

  • +4

Slowest postage for item in amazon, mine has not arrived yet since 20/11

    • +3

It is coming from the other side of the world mate..! During start of xmas shopping and black friday sales.. Amazon have us so spoiled that 10 days is a long wait for something coming from overseas.

    • You've been waiting years for this?

  • +4

This is a great little USB-C to take on holidays to backup your photos/videos from your mobile phone or to load up with movies for plane flights.

No issues using this thumb drive with a silicone phone case.

Transfer speeds are really good too! Word of warning though, I lost my first one as the eyelet for the keyring broke / wore through.

    • +14

I don't even know that I lost mine until I read your post.

      • +1

That's why I like their all metal USB A thumb drives. Virtually unloseable on a keyring. I then stick a USB A to C adaptor on to connect to USB C. The adaptor is (slightly) less loseable, and I've got spares just in case.

    • Thanks! Needed something for the flight. Do you watch straight from the USB or transfer to phone first?

      • +1

        Bit of both

  • Writes are only around 100 Megs a sec which is garbage speeds imo in 2023/24 era

For reference my 6-8 yr old 2.5" ssd does 300 Megs/s write and that feels slow copying files

And yes, I understand this is smaller but i rather a slightly bigger nvme drive/enclo which much faster speeds!

    • +4

This same memory stick costs $74 in Australia, so, for the price it's great value even though it's not as fast as you expect.

    • +1

its 30 bucks what are you expecting lol

    • +8

You cannot directly compare these flash drives with those NVME SSD drives. Different tech. These are for compact storage, while SSD is for faster and larger drives.

      • Corolla is a bad car because my Ferrari is faster

  • +1

from the views , write speed only 110MB/s.
cant record Apple ProRes which require at least 200MB/s

    • +4

I think Apple recommends external SSD storage for ProRes from the beginning.

  • Review info:
Samsung claims read speeds of up to 400 MBps, but makes no claims about writes except for noting that it is expected to be lower. These are backed up by the ATTO benchmarks provided below. ATTO benchmarking is restricted to a single configuration in terms of queue depth, and is only representative of a small sub-set of real-world workloads. It does allow the visualization of change in transfer rates as the I/O size changes, with optimal performance being reached around 512 KB for a queue depth of 4 - read speeds of around 353 MBps, and writes coming in around 110 MBps.

  • With write speeds like that, you'd think Samsung enjoys designing e-waste…

    • +20

Wow if you think 100MB/s write speed is slow, wait till you see how much slower many other USB 3 flash drives are on the market, such as those frequently posted Sandisk Ultra range on OzBargain.

    • +5

There's not much point making it much faster. Makes it more expensive for next to no benefit

There's always a trade off when it comes to sustained speed and the size of the USB.

That's why you always have people complaining about hot/throttling on just about every compact usb that offers 3.0 speeds. It's always going to run into thermal issues if its small

      • +2

Exactly.. I have fast SSDs in enclosures but still purchased this one for the size. And this is still faster than most microSD+reader combinations.

  • +3

bought it from jb hifi a couple months ago to record ProRes on my 15 pro max. works effortlessly, then again i only tried 4k30. but worth it if youre looking for something to backup your stuff on ig

    • Have you tried on 4K60? Love to know if it works

      • just tested it and it works! but that said, you'd probably want something thats bigger if you want to record 4k60 ProRes. this will give you about 15 mins of recording time lol

  • +1

What happened to the percentage bar for the claims? I thought I was part of a limited elite. I feel cheated. 😢

    • Maybe too many to sell, i will wait, probably get cheaper lol

    • Do you expect a medal too for being part of a limited elite? XD

  • Good Deal 🥳
