They Wonder Why Piracy Still Continues When They Do This to Paying Customers

Playstation removing previously purchased content (originally posted on HackerNews) - looks to be TV series mostly.

I assume by 'previously purchased' they actually meant 'licenced until we decide not to provide it'.

  • i thought it was common knowledge with all digital media, you only have access while they retain the rights to stream it.

It is common knowledge - it doesn't make it acceptable to me (that's why I don't utilise the 'services' of companies that think this practice is ok).

I am not surprised when businesses do this but am always amused when they complain about piracy.
They act as though they have no ability to make it a less attractive option by maybe putting their customers higher in their priorities.

      • yeah, I hate it too, i only buy it if I find that it seems to be a reasonable price to be worth my time, or if I was going to "rent" one and it was only a dollar or two extra to "own", and I only do that if I'm desperate to watch a movie that isn't available on one of the services I'm using, mostly twice a year I will do it

You will own nothing, and be happy.

"You will own nothing, **and simultaneously be owned ( by way of data) **, and be happy."

      • I understand the first bit and some of the ways they are trying to achieve it but I still can't figure out the 'be happy' part? Will it be 'be happy or else'? Or "Hey, here's some free drugs!"?

        • …or else… or take it or leave it, aka like it or lump it

          • @Protractor: Still not sure how I'm supposed be happy about it. :)

@EightImmortals: Wait for WW3, your house will be nuked (act of war, no insurance), no food, no shelter, no water …

Then, once you get your pod assigned by Blackrock, you will own nothing, but be happy to live in the pod and eat the bugs ;)

              • @7ekn00: Nicely put. :)
I guess that what Klause's book "Mein Reset" was about?

@EightImmortals: Hehe, he uses the words "disaster" and "fear" (could be pandemic v2.0, meteorite strike, pole switch, ww3, etc) and how that presents "opportunity for change" :/

When I was a lad we had to watch everything on TV or we miss it, and we were happy!

People laugh at why some of us still chase physical media. This is the reason.

    • +2

Problem is, with games at least, they make them online only, or online verification, then shut down the servers.

Pretty sure they'd love to do the same with media.

      • I avoid those games now. Was devastated when the my muppet show game on the ipad got shut down after I'd sunk hours and hours of time into it.
Now I have online game trust issues.

People are now starting to regret selling their physical media. I sure I am….. I moved homes 3 times in the last 3 years and I had to sell alot cause I downsize so much.

Oh well….. Keep your physical media guys!!

    Buy to rent = digital

    Buy to keep = physical

Download for free, best of both worlds.

looking at that list of tv series that they will be removing … "due to our content licensing arrangements with content providers".

Majority shown on a regular FTV 7Mate or 9Life … infact - in a loop (of 9-12 months). So you can watch again + again anyway - FTV.

Also, any really worth keeping after you've PAID + watched it ???

Alaskan Bush People + BBQ Pitmasters + Cake Boss + Deadliest Catch + Mythbusters + Say Yes to the dress + Tanked +++ etc.

People pay to watch those shows???
even if you've gone 100% digital - can still use the APPS of said FTV providers to see those shows.

    [EDIT] :

for those that appear to be commenting without even looking at the list that playstation will be removing …
here is the link (from OP's post) again - https://www.playstation.com/en-us/legal/psvideocontent/

  • Unfortunately this is what happens when we no longer own our physical products (movie DVDs, CD and vinyl collection, games on disc, physical books, cash notes as currency). Certainly it is convenient, but the powers-that-be can turn off the tap at any time, for any reason.

  • Never buy digital, always physical

Hold on to those DVD collections of A Country Practice and The Maxx!

  • I jumped off the monthly sub train when all my albums on google player got switched to monthly, took all my money. If your going digital, share them with your mates at least.

  • And people laugh when I tell them I 4650 titles in drawers next to my bluray player, and a subscription to Pirate Bay

  • I have to disagree with most of the posters above. I regret buying all the DVD and Blu-ray that I did as most i have watched once or twice at the most. Would have saved a heap of money just to rent them. The same with digital, I only rent, never buy.
