(RESOLVED) Can I Return iPhone Bought from JB Hi-Fi Using TCN Giftcards?

Hi all, I just bought an iPhone yesterday using TCN Gift cards from JB Hi-Fi and was planning to go for TRS this weekend.

But noticed that as per TRS website, it is mentioned that the receipt should have my name or passport number on it if it is $1000+. I called the JB Hi-Fi store back to ask if I can get my name on the receipt or invoice but they said due to privacy reasons they don't put names on the receipts and can't help me with that.

I had a chat with TRS customer care and they mentioned that you will have to explain this at the airport and then agent will decide whether to process it or not.

So now I am confused and wanted to check should I take the risk at the airport? Or if I can refund the phone for JB Hi-Fi credit and order it online for click and collect? Please note: I used 20+ TCN gift cards and the seller at JB disposed them to recycle.

Any advise or suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks

UPDATE: Went in-store and they refunded and sold the product and issued a new receipt with my details added in the comments on the receipt.

they said due to privacy reasons they don't put names on the reciepts and can't help me with that.

    That's just bullshit. lol

    Sales of $1,000 or more
Tax invoices for sales of $1,000 or more also need to show the buyer's identity or ABN.

    • My thoughts exactly. I am the buyer, I don’t mind them using my name on the receipt or in their system, not sure why they are concerned about it!!

I usually tell them (not just JB, but other places as well) at the time of the sale that I'm going to TRS something and they add my name to it. I think in your situation, they just CBF fixing it after the sale.

        • Yeah I realised that it needs my name after purchasing!

          • @sam0041: I'd go in with your reciept and ask for an invoice. give all your details pre-written. make it easy

Did you see the other thread about TRS fraud?

    • I am sorry, I didn’t. What TRS fraud?

Basically if you plan to bring it back in, you shouldnt be claiming TRS. I'm not going to advise either way, but be aware of the questions/process.

You pulling an iphone out of your pocket, showing them is a fairly good indication its for you and not a valid TRS refund

        • +1

          Yeah, not bringing it back.

          • -3

@sam0041: We all know you will bring it back.

            • @Fredfloresjr: You can think that but I am not the one to take a really big risk for just 10%

            • @Fredfloresjr: lol yeah, we all know it.

I'm not going to pretend im an angel (hint hint), just wanted to highlight the mess the other guy put himself in.

The fact its an iphone, probably in his pocket was a great indication it wasnt a genuine TRS

              • +1

@Davo1111: Yeah, I get that why you anyone would think that but not gonna risk it

                • @sam0041: If it's genuine, you have nothing to worry about. ie if they do flag you for checking when you come back in, even if they do check you - you wont have the phone.

However, if you're actually taking it out and want the refund. Follow the procedure to the letter, as they're going to find reasons to not refund it.

Worst case (for a legit export), the claim is rejected and you're no worse off than when you started.

It will be secondhand on return and worth less

    • sound like it. unless op has no intention of bring back his phone?

      • Yeah, not bringing it back… taking it as a gift for my brother

        • where does your brother live?

          • @Davo1111: Bangladesh

@Davo1111: are you happy now TRS police? Do you need further verification?

            • @carlJack: lol, it was literally what the TRS will ask. At least he passed the basic test.

If you pull a used iphone out of your pocket, they know that you're coming back with it, and committing TRS fraud. That's exactly how this guy got flagged.

I've made a bunch of suggestions to get this sorted.

            • @carlJack: Haha Carl, all good, he has been helpful!

I was in a similar situation with officeworks few days back. Lots of calls and chat but nothing of substance. Although i was offered an advise that return with officeworks gift card and buy again.

Walked into one of the stores explained need my name on the receipt, and they were able to create a return and buy receipt without actually doing the gift card thing. Only thing the name was somewhere in middle where checkout person name appears generally they changed to mine.
    No issues with TRS.

So if leads to nothing walk into the store talk to couple of guys and they will get something done. Happens a lot don’t think they would be unaware of it. I think i got them to get me a paper slip with name and product details and attached with e-receipt few years back. Good luck.

    • Thanks for sharing. I’ll try it. Did the paper slip work for TRS attached with receipt?

      • The guy above just got a refund, repurchase, and a new reciept with his name printed on it.

Have a look at the TRS website. It explains the exact requirements, abn, your name etc.

I remember when i worked in retail, I could do it with some finessing, but it's not something they normally do.

You have nothing to lose by going in. Make it easy for them…. have it all written out.

        • Thanks, will go in today and let you guys know how it works out!

          • @sam0041: cool cool, let us know how you go. I would "frame" it the right way

"i bought this iphone yesterday, i didnt realise the requirements for TRS, can i please get an invoice with my name on it. Here are my details pre-written, the reciept, and the unopened box"

If you charge in there asking for a refund, i doubt it's going to happen. I would hold up the counter queue, but thats your choice.

            • @Davo1111: Yes will do that! Thanks Heaps.. refund would be the last option if nothing can happen

Last year I was in the similar situation. I bought surface pro from jbhifi and the receipt didnt have my name on it. So I went back to jb and asked them for a full receipt. They took out their manual receipt book and wrote my name, address and filled up eveything else and gave it to me.

    • Thanks Mate, will go in and try

I had a similar thing with a manufacturer cashback offer. I contacted the JB HiFi store and they emailed me a pdf copy of a hand written receipt that looks like it came from one of those old fashioned order books with individual numbers and tracing paper. It had their logo and ABN on it.

  • I used 20+ TCN gift cards and the seller at JB disposed them to recycle

you can ask jbhifhi to issue store credit (usually in the form of jb hifi gift card) if you want to return . then use this to order online.
