Expandable Memory and 3.5 Headphone Jack Recommendations for 2022+ Phone

I looked through the forms and past topics on this a little old.

I have a samsung s10e that is on its way out and looking for a replacement phone with expandable memory and 3.5 headphone jack. I spend a lot of time in hospital and also looking at dialysis etc. I usually listen to audio books or podcasts at night to cut the hospital noises and watch tv shows or movies to kill time in waiting rooms etc. Streaming isnt really an option due to data restrictions (and waiting hours) and black spots in some areas of hospital. Also Bluetooth headphones not really designed to be running all night as a sleep aid.

Is there any recommendations what is a good phone replacement?

P.s. I dont want a tablet etc to lug around to work, hospital etc

Apologies if this was answered multiple times.

The best cheap option might be the Nokia G60

And there's also the new Moto G84. It was released in September.

Both phones use the same Snapdragon 695 SoC

Have you considered wireless headphones? I used wired for a long time but when changing to AirPods Pro it was a big difference. No more wire being snagged on things. They are light and stay in my weird shaped ears. Sound good, even when taking calls. I see a lot of AirPod Pro style generic headphones cheap, they probably sound fine for audiobooks. And if you ever really did need wired one day you could just get a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle.

You can pry my wires out of my cold dead hands.

      dongle

It's outrageous that they take a standard piece of something on just about every audio device ever, and sell it back to us in a less reliable and less convenient form.

These dongles are marvels. The tiny length of cable actually has a fairly high quality DAC and amp built into it, the Apple one does anyway.

        • Funny you mention the apple one, considering it highlights problems with compatibility between devices…

Don't forget to carry around a usb-c hub too, so you don't have to unplug whatever other thing is using the single usb-c port. Dongles are garbage and 3.5mm has a lot of utility. Hell, apple still includes it on their macbook pros - one of only 3 ports. They figured it was more useful than a damn ethernet or usb-a port…

  • I listen to audiobooks and have tried a lot of mp3 players. Recently I have bought a cheap bone bluetooth headphones which are great start from where I left off, comfortable light and cheap. Just put my audiobooks on my phone and use Simple ABD audiobook program which is free.

    • thanks, though stuck in hospital etc, you have limited power points (sometimes none and need power bricks) so hard to recharge any Bluetooth headphones -just easier to have a phone with mp3 audiobooks etc and wired headphones that dont need their own power source.

  • What is “headphone jack”

Considering it started being removed 7 years ago, we already have an entire generation that have grown up with wireless earbuds being the norm. Wires are probably seen as retro by them

I'd say this Nokia G60 deal is fairly reasonable.

Black is $248 if you pick up at your local JB Hi-Fi. Otherwise, there's a postage cost. Grey is only available for delivery.

You can go lower if you use discounted JB Hi-Fi gift cards.

    E.g. 3% off $248 = $240.56 effective cost.

It supports esim, 2 physical SIMs, expandable storage and headphone jack. 6GB RAM, 128GB built-in storage.

A lot of comparable phones go for $300 to $500.

No charger though, so you'll have to provide your own.

Also, the back is made of 100% recycled plastic, so there's a weird texture like its dirty, but it isn't actually dirty, it's just a consequence of 100% recycled plastic.
