How Do You Feel about Your Job?

There was a comment or two here the other day suggesting that 80% of people dislike their jobs.
I don't think it would be particularly that high, but I believe it would still likely be a majority of people do not enjoy their work.

People, particularly online, say "You have to love what you do!" but most people I've talked to about job satisfaction/enjoyment aren't getting anything out of their work other than a pay cheque.
Doubly so in some places I have worked. The turnover rate of some places I've been is just obscene.

So OzBargain, as the fountain of all knowledge, how do you feel about your job?

My arbitrary definitions for the sake of the poll:
Love suggests you would have no intentions of leaving
Like suggests you're not unhappy, but you would consider a better offer if it came along
"A job is a job" suggests you wouldn't care if you stayed or left, it's just money
Dislike suggests you'd prefer to leave, should probably be looking for other work, albeit maybe casually
Hate suggests you would probably leave for less money, should be actively looking for other work

Feel free to explain your reasoning in the comments! Or not, I'm not your dad.

    well it pays the bills

    • Not a subscriber to 'You have to love what you do' mantra, I see!

      • nah tbh i actually love my main day job
i know it like the back of my hand, have a good reputation in this relatively small specialist industry, and always learning something new.

the customers though . makes me shake my head everyday. some really good ones but the bad ones are just really bad…and many of them are repeat customers.

I love what I do and it's better than my previous role which was 9-5. More money, less stress, flexible hours and completely remote, no office travel.

    Government,
    What's not to love.

Apart from the never-ending bureaucracy which then increases the employee numbers which in turn generates more bureaucracy and so the cycle continues.

    • Reminds me of sutherland council.
6 Traffic controllers (sitting down in the shade on their phones ) to trim a moderately sized tree in a quiet neibourhood

    • And here I was thinking gov jobs were the dream from a pay/work/life balance perspective.

And here I was thinking gov jobs were the dream from a pay/work/life balance perspective.

It is. But from a job satisfaction and complete disillusionment with wasting taxpayer dollars it's a nightmare…

        • Could be worse I guess.
I have no job satisfaction, crap pay, mediocre work/life balance, and sell products to government departments so I still get the disillusionment. :)

  • I love my job. 9 years plus now at work managing aged care. Very flexible with hours and pay is very competitive ++ annual bonus.

10 mins away from home, 5 mins away from wife's work place and Kids day care.

    • So lucky. I wish there were lots of aged care jobs .😔

I love my job. I just wish it was a 4 day week instead of 5.

If i could just get rid of the students, the parents, the paperwork and the 'i went to school so therefore im more qualified than you' brigade, then sure, Id love my job.

No, not over it at all…. 💀

I have worked at worse places than where I am now but at the end of the day a job is a job, I'm only working to earn money.

  • I usually love it, but at this very moment with this poll today… its dropped down to dislike.

To be fair, its things out of my workplaces control that have me down to dislike though. Once rectified it will recover… probably.

    • If those days become most days, you're in trouble.

      • If these problems are not rectified very soon i will be out of there.

I haven’t experienced working somewhere I disliked for many years and forgot how awful it is.
Even though this might be temporary, it has me questioning whether i will see it out much longer.

  • I ticked I love my job. I'm well paid, trusted and they're very flexible.

  • I think the question should start with something like.. "If you had to have a job….", because I suspect quite a few people, if not everyone, would rather not work if they didn't have to!

I wish I had Jeff Bezos' job, would retire instantly and cash out the wealth. And Timothee Chamelet's youth and appearance. Michael Langan's intelligence. Then I'd be satisfied with life.

I don’t mind my job but my company has become increasingly woke so hope they ease up a bit. My pronouns are sir or master

  • I love my job. I just wish it was a 0 day week instead of 5

  • Work is work. For me, working full time for somebody else is not good at all. I'd rather have less money but total freedom and independence and work for myself. I started doing manual labour recently and enjoying it a lot more than computer/desk based work. But I wouldn't want to do either of them 35+ hours a week.

  • I like my job, I analyse data and improve things while working with a group of people I really enjoy working with. I get that happy dopamine hit from solving a problem or seeing them happy when I make someone else's life easier or just social interaction with nice people.

It also pays well. I don't like my job that much that I wouldn't quit tomorrow if I won the lotto.

  • I've been with my current employer just shy of 10 years. I thought I loved my previous role in the company, but 12 months ago I moved into a new role and can honestly say I've never had a more interesting and rewarding job than now. Bonus is that I get to pick up the slack in my old role whenever I have some free time. So yeah, I love my job to the point of revising my (still reasonably distant) retirement plans.

  • Since I retired I love my job.

  • Can be physically demanding some days but I tell myself it's free exercise.

The small social interaction requirements is nice.

  • I like my job but we are currently going through EBA negotiations and it is getting quite spicy so the current environment isn't great. In another few months, once it is all eventually settled, it should go back to normal though.

Decent pay, not physical, on your own most of the time, only a ten minute commute on my electric scooter. Can't complain.

  • The best thing I heard from Operations is that we have to micro manage as we are a small company. So sad 😔
