VX Commodore Ignition Stuck on/ No Spring Back?

Hi all,

Went to start the old VX the other day and noticed the spring back missing after trying to start the car (which didn't work).
Then noticed the ignition was still in the on position, even though the key was back to off.

Research suggests a new ignition switch?

Any tips on where to buy one (eBay sales? wreckers?) and will I have any issue fitting one (no special tools required)?

Cheers

Screwdriver to start will do that every time. Ask Uncle Ian. He sorted me out for a slab and a pack of darts.

My son parts out VT-VY commies as a side hustle. I'll have a chat to him when he gets home and PM you if he's got any secondhand spare.

New (not OEM) parts on eBay for around $35 I believe.

Edit: just called him to see if he had one. To quote him..

There's one on the Shanghai red vy but some f#$kwit in the last 20 years has rounded the grub screw so can't get it off.

He said just buy a new Chinese part off eBay.

Re the special tools - just a Phillips head to remove steering column shroud, a paper clip or similar to pop out the key barrel and a 2mm Allen key to remove the grub screw to get the ignition switch off.

Thank you kind sir!! Hopefully no f#$wit has rounded off this grub srew.

  • Can also try Napa or Auto One for generic options.

  • So, just how much graphite powder did you try and use before it got stuck?

    • I think it has just worn away/ spring broken. Could simply open up and replace the spring I suspect (remember when we used to fix things). But the car is 5hrs away.. Need to make sure it will go when i get there.

I suspect that the actual switch has broken off the back of the ignition barrel, or seperated internally, which is why you had no crank, and it remained in the on position even with key removed.

        • Advice taken. New switch ordered.

          Thanks all.
