CentreCom SSD Sale Online - Samsung 830 128GB $99 +Shipping

380

Looks like Centre Com are once again having a SSD sale. Good for people who can pick-up locally, as I guess shipping will kill this deal. Probably the first time I've seen the Samsung below $100

These deals appear to be online exclusives.

Edit:

Well this kinda sucks, just tried to buy one. Looks like you CANNOT pick this up in-store. Feel free to NEG the deal. Might as well goto MSY and pay $102 for it. Looks like I have to take back what I said about local pick-up above.

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/samsung-830+256gb

Pickup price is good, I just paid $220 for one yesterday since my old ssd died.

      • thanks, its good to know 209 aint far off

i want to replace my x25g2, its working fine but 80gb is just too small for gaming

    • Reply to my own post

I just checked out Gamedude's website after following various old ozbargain threads

      http://www.gamedude.com.au/
He has INTEL 330 Series 240gb for $199
      LiteOn 256GB MODEL : LZT-256M3S SATA-3 Marvell Controller 510MB/s Read for $159
      LiteOn 128GB MODEL : S100-128 SATA-3 Marvell Controller 510MB/s Read $85

dont know what freigth charges are

      Are these more worth it?

    • That is a good price for these Samsung SSD's (the 256GB version)
There's not a real lot of margain in them.
If you're looking for a better price / shipping cost ratio I would suggest checking out this:

  • I'm considering getting a Liteon 128GB with a USB 3.0 enclosure and using it like a big USB stick.

You can buy a Sandisk 64GB USB 3.0 stick for $65, so an extra $14 gets you double the capacity and possibly faster speed.

    • But 4 times the size of a usb

      • Yeah, that's the only downside, if you don't mind the size.

It's an online exclusive price though. Not sure what the in store price is. You have to pay $15 if you're in Melb to ship it, so not as good. I assumed you could pick up in store, but there's no option.. even though the stock comes from the store itself.

      • Unless you get something like this
        http://www.hwtools.net/adapter/SSDMb.html

but I don't think there's any available in Australia

    • Depends how fast you really need it to be. I've tried it with the 256gb on usb 3.0 and only achieved on average 160MB/s

      • That's good enough for me. SSDs are cheaper per GB than fast USB 3.0 sticks now, so it's very tempting.

    • Just check the Liteon ssd warranty, pretty sure it was shorter than other ssd brands!

      • Yeah the Liteon is only 1 year.

    • Nice idea. It should be noticeably faster as it's SSD vs NAND/Flash? No?

  • arent liteons also slower than the samsung, so for an extra $20 you get better warranty and reliability and speed with the samsung (or were they the same rebranded ssds?)

    • The Plextors are rebranded LiteOns (although that may have changed now).

  • Are these better then crucial?

    • +1

In terms of speed, yes. In terms of reliability Crucial still has the edge, although barely over Samsung IMO.

  • I have 2011 macbook pro. Is it compatible and Can I install it immediately or do I need an adapter or something before I can install it?

    • I have a 2010 Macbook Pro and I replaced the internal HDD with a SSD easily enough, without the need of any adapters.

I can't say specifically for your model, however. Mac's can be a little funny with certain branded SSD's.

  • 7mm drive under $100. I'm Sold!

  • Umart also has them for $102. Not worth the effort to save $3.

    • +1

      So does MSY.

    • +3

this is ozbargain its worth every effort to save $3

      • But this is online only, so isn't the actual cost $99 + shipping? I doubt shipping would be $3 or less…

  • When is an online deal not an online deal? When mandatory shipping kills the deal! Clearly deceptive behaviour by the retailer and why min. shipping should always be in the title when pickup is not possible in my opinion. Not negging the deal as it's not the poster's fault.

    • Just because the shipping kills the deal for you, doesn't mean it does for others. 'Mandatory' shipping? Do you expect CentreCom, or most any other online retailer, to simply send it to you for free?

Clearly deceptive behaviour by the retailer

How, by not building the shipping price into the cost of the item? Sure seems dishonest to me…
      /s

min. shipping should always be in the title when pickup is not possible in my opinion

"+ shipping" has always sufficed, and is the norm - 'minimum shipping $xx.xx' would be just adding meaningless bloat to the title, since it's going to be different for interstate people, anyway.

    • just picked up 2 x samsung 256GB in store, same price as online listing

    • I think the 830's are much better value:

      1. The 840's are untested in terms of reliability. Whilst there's no reason to distrust them, it's best to play it safe with SSD's. I'd rather let others be the crash-test dummies for the new drives.

      2. There's no particular benefits over the 830's, considering the only real differences can be seen in benchmarks - even between SATA2 and 3 drives.

      3. The 830's are pretty damn cheap at the moment, which couldn't be said for the 840's until a long while after release.

      • true, and things always seem better with mature firmware, however this summary review comment is interesting:

"Synthetic benchmarks such as CrystalDiskMark and AS SSD Benchmark revealed that while the 840 Pro's sequential read performance has not improved over the 830 (perhaps due to limitations of the SATA 6Gb/s interface), the drive's write performance has improved dramatically. This was particularly true when working with smaller files where the 840 Pro outpaced last year's 830 by a margin of about 30%."

Now to me, that suggests that people will see greatly improved write rates with the 840 series. Write rates have always been the weak point of SSD IMO.

  • Anyone have a Intel 330? Currently deciding between it and a Samsung 830.

  • These Samsung 830 drives will continue to be sold off cheap now the Samsung 840 drives are coming on to the market. As you'd expect for a followup drive, initial tests show the 840 drives far superior to the 830 in terms of performance. In fact, Anandtech say the 840 is the best performing consumer SSD they've ever tested. The jury is out on the reliability for now.

  • If I buy a cheap Acer ultra book with HDD, can I just replace the HDD with one of these Samsung 128gb SSD drives easily enough ? Thanks

  • Ordered the Samsung 830 128gig from Bendigo Centrecom, waited a week for order to arrive no call, they had "forgotten to order it" no apology, just "you will have to wait another week and it will be an additional $10 for freight" after they confirmed $99 and my order, 7 days ago GREAT SERVICE . And retail wonder why they are loosing business to online resellers.

    • I agree on Bendigo CentreCom… It's a shame that we have no other major (price-competitive) businesses to deal with here.
