After several failures to get games working at LANs I have started work on an XP VM with games installed, patched, modified, etc and known to work.
I have no problems buying multiple copies of games to support this, but DRM must not get in the way of installing the game once on the VM then copying multiple times. Online not required (LAN only).
Steam games are out as you'ld need a different account for each copy.
GOG games are brilliant and are in.
Also working:
Starcraft
Warcraft 3
UT2004
Quake 2
Doomsday (doom/heretic/hexen)
IWD2
Anyone done something like this before? Ideas as to other games that work in this environment?
I haven't tested this but I'm willing to bet that Quake3/Quake4 and Age of Empires 2 would work fine once you add the nocd cracks. To be honest I stopped religiously playing games that came out after Quake 3… big Quake fan here and nothing has really interested me since :(
Question though.. Most [all?] of the above games should work fine on Win7, even with networking. I know Quake2 works because I still regularly have LANs at home with brothers/friends on win7[32/64bit] boxes - what's your reasoning for the xp vm?
