I bought this tripod a few months back, for $49, I think. It is fairly sturdy, but I would like the pistol grip to lock in place a bit firmer. I have just a crop sensor DSLR with a basic lens, and if I try and set it it certain angled positions with the pistol grip, it tends to droop a bit. Using as a monopod is quite good and high enough and there to drooping doesn't really bother, as you use it differently anyway. Better than no tripod at all, but you might be able to do better for the money.

  • How can once tell if the tripod suits their camera from a model compatability and a weight point of view?

    Help appreciated.

  • I have 2 of the tripods and they have been awesome. They hold my D7000, battery grip, Sigma 70-200mm OS with teleconverter any way I like, with no slipping.

    • That is impressive…thank you.

  • Post should be corrected - it's a 3tb desktop drive.

    • Fixed. thank you

Not necessarily saying Optex is crap cough…but with just about everything photography related, you get what you pay for. When it comes to buying a tripod, if you intend to be doing photography for a while or expanding your gear in the future, do yourself a favour and buy the most expensive one you can afford - it'll save you in the long run.

I'd recommend something rock-solid like a Manfrotto or Gitzo with proper aluminium/magnesium legs + separate head, or if you're on a smaller budget maybe a Velbon. You can get a very solid Manfrotto kit (190XPROB legs + ball head) for a relatively cheap amount on eBay (usually from South Korean sellers), which will easily hold most setups worth <$8000 and will last a lot longer than this cheap Optex.

    • thanks for the tip!
