Cheapest I have ever seen them. I bought them in black when they dropped just below $300. 3xCamels history isn't synced only shows $500+.
Original price on release was $880 with some places still selling them at that price they are dreaming.
App is FLAWED - read opinions below for details.

other than that google results show them for roughly $499+ at Australian stores.

I have these headphones so I can answer any questions, but I will do my best to include all my opinions below.

First what's in the box? The headphones and USB charging cable that also functions as digital audio connection to PC. That's it, if you were expecting more now you know so you won't be disappointed. For zero latency wireless PC use you need to buy the USB dongle separately it's not included. They connect to Xbox directly so that's covered, just know the battery life when connected to Xbox is only 12 hours. if you use them with bluetooth only (not Xbox) which is what I do you get 24 hours.

Second these headphones definitely have flaws which are all app related. I bought them for bluetooth use for tablet and movies and they work fine for that use. I paid somewhere close to $299. The app had bugs and some of them have been fixed but one still remains.
The first bug was a popup that comes up and asks you to "confirm ownership" by tapping on the side of the headphones. this literally kept popping up I probably done it 20 30 times I lost count. and it doesn't popup straight away so you have to wait for it to come up, why? because until you confirm ownership half of the headphone settings are greyed out and you can't adjust everything.
this happened for about a week before somehow it stopped happening, and I could access all settings as soon as I opened the Beoplay app. but seems like a serious issue for a $800 headphone that was released in 2021. I expected all "bugs" to be fixed when buying in 2023.
So this is the other bug that still exists to this day, everytime I charge the headphones to full and turn them back on the EQ gets set back to default "OPTIMAL" in the app. and it's happening before I connect it to the App I can tell because I have the custom EQ set to have really strong bass.
2 years later and this bug still hasn't been detected and fixed, I feel like it shouldn't be a bug in a $300 headphone I imagine those who paid $800 are fuming.
I am experiencing this with the latest version of the app and the headphones firmware up to date.
oh and the custom EQ is in the shape of a circle not your typical graphic equalizer shape, there is a learning curve but I got the hang of it quickly and achieved amazing customized sound. bass extends very deep and is impactful amazing for movies like Dune and The Creator. mids and treble are nice and clear.

other than that, I already mentioned battery life is on the shorter side. 24 hours with Bluetooth which is long enough for me I only need to charge it once a week sometimes I can go longer. I actually tested by timing total Bluetooth use, I got 13 hours total until battery was 50% so I can confirm what is claimed is accurate. but with Xbox connection it only lasts 12 hours, not good IMO.
other things I like, earpads are extremely soft and comfy and big enough. at first the clamping force felt a bit tight but it improves quickly until it's just right and stays securely on your head while being comfortable. typical Beoplay build quality and materials I can't complain. charges via USB-C. supports digital wired audio via USB-C and charges while in use. I like the fact powering on button (just a single button) turns it on and off with quick press, no holding down to power like other bluetooth headphones. Multipoint works great with 2 devices which is my use case. when switching on it auto connects to whichever device is closest and you are interacting with.
the touch controls work, but the you get huge jumps on the volume side it's too sensitive so I use the volume buttons on the tablet instead. touch control for ANC is fine because there are only a few levels and it's easy to control up or down. ANC is… ok. it definitely cuts lower frequencies very well you can notice it straight away, but it doesn't completely cancel higher sounds like people talking/music.

oh one more thing, especially for movies I noticed I have to turn the volume up quite high. movies are known to have more dynamic range so this is typically the case, but with the Portals I watch movies with them set at like 90% volume. The good thing is it doesn't seem to negatively affect battery life at all, but it did feel a bit odd at first having volume so high but you get used to it.

I think I included everything. ask me a question if you read until here and I haven't mentioned it.

Thanks for the detailed write-up !

    • just added a sentence or two that I remembered. - multipoint and - volume levels
hopefully it translates the complete user experience.

the single amazon review doesn't provide any info at all other than "quality quality quality".

      • Sorry if this is a stupid question but is this headphones or a headset? I ask since it's an Xbox version and i see the following line

Own Voice technology and our innovative array of built-in mics keep conversations clear

But no other mention of mic ?

        • +1

not a stupid question. I just didn't mention it because I don't use it as a headset.
with Xbox direct connection use or PC dongle (PC dongle is additional purchase) use it definitely functions as a headset. the microphones are built in though it doesn't have a boom mic, Beoplay marketing claims "boomless microphone that sounds like a boom mic" but I don't know how true that is. judging from youtube reviews it just sounded "fine" to me nothing amazing.

with bluetooth connection I doubt it uses the mic other than during calls on your phone. reason being running in mic mode all the time on bluetooth seriously ruins the listening audio quality this applies to all bluetooth headphones that have mic mode because bluetooth simply doesn't have high enough data transfer to support good audio in both directions. TLDR with bluetooth connection just expect it to function like any other bluetooth headphones.

  • I have h95s and they are affected by the same stupid charge / eq reset bug. Thankfully they have about a million hour battery life, but is so dumb that it still persists years after launch.

    • "I have h95s and they are affected by the same stupid charge / eq reset bug."

at least now I know I'm not the only one lol. yeah it's definitely annoying, especially when I go to use them with the TV and not the tablet which means I don't have the ability to just tap and open the app to fix it.

but I found something out recently which I didn't know before. the Beoplay app is basically a single app for ALL Bang and Olufsen products, literally every single one from these $300 headphones to $100,000 speakers. in terms of bug fixes and updates, the cheapest end are the headphones and they must be the lowest priority…

so to all those customers who complain of brands not having one singular app, be glad you have separate apps which seem to work properly. when everything relies on being compatible with one singular app I think there are more problems.

      • I have had H9is and HXs and neither of those did this. Interestingly enough, if I charge them to full when connected via USB-C to my MacBook - whilst listening via USB-C wired - they don't seem to do it.. so if they charge to full when powered up the EQ stays set.

        • "so if they charge to full when powered up the EQ stays set."

very useful to know thank you. so I guess when nearly getting to full charge, I can power them on and avoid the EQ reset. the tricky part is knowing when it's close to full charge because the light just turns to solid green when full with no indication of % before that.

or maybe in the app I can just set the auto headphone power off setting to "never" that way I can turn the headphones on 1 hour after I start charging, and it will stay powered on until 100% and prevent EQ reset. I never relied on the auto power off feature anyway I always remember to turn them off after using.

  • TLDR Build material quality and sound quality is great. ANC is mediocre. App is FLAWED - read opinions in description for details.

  • Should have brand in the title.. Even if just B&O

  • One of the worst headphones I have ever bought, H9, the clamping force would crush your skull. They're so discomforting. Total garbage. Sound quality isn't spectacular. Noise cancellation is pathetic.

    • never tried H9 but in my experience when new Portal's clamping force wasn't crushing my skull and it softens and opens up after some time.

sound quality experience is also very good on Portals. after applying custom EQ bass extends very deep without being boomy. mids and treble are not muffled but no area is harsh or piercing either. overall I would consider the sound better than most headphones I have used and great for bluetooth headphones. I also have a pair of cheaper Sony's and the bass just can't extend deep even working on custom EQing in the app can't increase the deep bass, Sony sound always has more upper bass than deep bass.

in most cases though I have heard a lot of "you are overpaying for bang and olufsen" and I agree, even at $299 I feel like I paid the extra amount to buy something "nice". you can achieve 90% of all areas of comfort, sound, ANC, battery life with the $105 1More Sonoflow. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/815021

at the same time, some people will buy the Portals just because they are light grey.

      • I have set the headphones on a speaker to loosen the clamping force, Edifier S3000pro. It just don't loose up. Also, I feel that it's not comfortable at all. You can't use them for long, eventually you'd start feeling dizzy.

I use the app to eq the sound but the options are limited. Nothing special tbh.

You did not say anything about noise cancelling? Maybe because it's nomln existent lol

I finally settled on XM5. I tried all of them, XM3 xm4 Bose 35 45, b&o for the Bluetooth close back stuff.

        • "I use the app to eq the sound but the options are limited."

For me it did take about a week to fully understand how the circle shape EQ is working and the process of creating multiple custom presets and switching between them back and forth while listening to perfect it. but in the end I just achieved the best sound possible and kept just one preset and deleted the rest.

"You did not say anything about noise cancelling? Maybe because it's nomln existent lol"

I mentioned ANC is "ok" in the bottom of my post.
Portal does a good job with low frequency cancellation that's it. can't cancel highs much <——- it's a common complaint for average ANC. probably similar experience to budget Soundcore ANC which is known as best performer for it's budget price.

I agree with you, I don't recommend buying Portal if you expect "the best ANC" or are shopping with ANC as the main feature.

if you didn't notice, deal title does not mention ANC and neither does the Amazon product page title.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: I'd never buy another B&o product, I have given them enough time to break in, loosen up, burn in, still nothing special for the premium you pay.

If you buy a used XM3, per rtings website it's better on paper in terms of passive noise isolation and SQ.

You don't have to spend a fortune to get good sound. On a deal XM5 can be had close to 400$, I bought mine 350$ from JB.

I would highly recommend XM5, at least try it in the show room. Don't buy without testing, anything audio.

  • Thanks for the detailed write-up. Do you think it's worth the buy at this price? Even with it's floors.

    • from memory on a similar amazon page which was international amazon via amazon AU for the black colour. the first price I saw was 364. saw it drop to 338 few weeks later. told myself I would buy if it dropped below 300. dropped to 305 thought it wouldnt get any lower but dropped below 300 eventually. so clearly yea I ordered so thought it was worth it. but I didn't know about the bugs in the App. if I knew about the bugs I would say it's worth less. also at the time I was thinking $880 down to $300. but more realistically if you chose specific stores you could get it for $500, so now I think of it as $500 down to $300 quite different 40% off instead of 60% off.

$279 is a bit less than what I purchased for, but does the $20 cover the app bugs? no not in my opinion. but you are asking me to imagine a scenario when I bought not knowing bugs and price was $20 more I was in a different situation. again just imagined situation but I would probably purchase at $199 knowing there was these bugs. bugs is not exactly deal breaker like constant disconnect or something but it's still bugs.

      • I would wait for $220 :-)

        • you are more patient than me.
during my months of monitoring the price, it also jumped back up to like 370+ more than once so there was a worry that it would never get as low as 220. so at the time I just had to jump on it after setting myself a minimum expected price.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: B&O are way overpriced.
They do drop significantly during BF.
But since this is a newer model, you may have to wait a few years.

            • @congo: "B&O are way overpriced. "

I agree. if you can drop $880 release day price to under $280 that tells you everything. I didn't even look at B&O until the Portal price dropped which is the cheapest model they have. until then I knew B&O headphones are always $600 to $1500.

I think the main reason for such a price drop on Portal though is as Xbox headset it just isn't a $400+ product. the main issue being only 12 hour battery life. also remember early youtube reviews mentioning so many bugs which hurt it's value a lot on release day.
they also released the updated version for PS5 in 2022 with much better battery life and normal EQ, so they know they F'ed up for Xbox users.
