Hilix N80 Tyre Choice - Falken Wildpeak AT3W or BFGoodrich KO2

I need new tyres and have narrowed it down to Wildpeak or Goodrich KO 2

How an earth do I choose?

Mostly city driving with some off road.

All the YouTube videos are making it worse!

Thanks in advance

  • That is what it is coming to or a good Black Friday sale

I got Toyo AT3s yesterday for the same vehicle, and I do a decent amount of dirt/sand/offroad. LT265/65r17, $295+fitting/disposal each, but I'm rural. Tyreright was the cheapest near me. Look online for prices, or call local stores.

The Wildpeak was the other option I considered, but I have had a good run with Toyo. Have used BFGs before and would not go back to them, what others have said about the wet grip when they get past 10k kms.

Similar usage to yours but different vehicles (mine's a petrol Prado, 265/60R18):
I've done all the research possible (for the last 12 months+) and I lobbed on 3 for value, decent performance all round - inc on wet bitumen, and good wear. In no particular order: Falken Wildpeak, Yokohama Geolandar G015, Toyo AT III (very exe for LT versions).

Have a look at this website. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.j…
They have ratings for ATs, thousands of actual reviews by drivers, tests and comparisons (inc Wildpeak V Geolanadar iirc.
Look uncer the Research & Advice tab for tests.

If you can wait, there are regular (usually 2-3 times a year) 4 for 3 deals on both the Falken and the Yoko. Google will show up previous sales and the timing.

      Bol.

Hi there Appreciate your info and the link I will have a good read of it.

I need the tyres now but will remember the 4 for 3 for the Falken ones for next time

        • One more thing. Personal choice obviously, but as far as general performance and fuel usage goes I'd stick with the standard sizes the vehicle came with. ECU is matched to that setup and any change will (may) affect gearing, 'mpg', speedo. And, if you go bigger/wider you will be placing extra loads on the front end suspension and steering (because they are significantly heavier).

Wider (AT) tyres are generally better in sand (you should drop tyre pressure anyway) and for handling on loose dirt roads but much worse in the wet on and off road.

I'm generalising of course but the principles broadly apply.

PS - Tyrepower has the Falken 4 for 3 deal on now. https://tyrepowersale.com.au/specials
As always, compare the total cost against other discounters. Half an hour well spent. And don't be afraid to ask for price beat/match. Most will try and if they can't match they'll tell you their very best.

          • @Igaf: Thanks for your info. Just called them Tempe tyres are still the best price.

But they threw me a curve ball they suggested the LT tyres over the normal ones. Too many bloody choices!

            • +1

@twilsoncrow: Yep Tempe are very competitive even without deals.

LT is better for loads (higher ratings usually for both speed and load) and airing down/bagging your sidewalls in sand. More sidewall puncture resistant also if that's required.

Make sure you ask the date of manufacture. Should be < 6 months really.

If the LTs are only about $50 more they may be a better buy depending on how often to go off road. Don't know about the Wildpeak but the Yoko G015 LT tread depth was significantly more than the standard version. In theory should get better mileage although they are also heavier hence slightly less fuel efficient.

              • @Igaf: Thank you about the tip for the date of manufacture

                • +1

@twilsoncrow: My Yokos were very fresh. Less than a month old out of the factory in Asia. The month and year are stamped into the tyre when manufactured.

@twilsoncrow: LT tyres are always the way to go on a 4x4

I wasn't impressed with the KO2s on my N70. The Wild peaks get good reviews.

I've had both though on different vehicles. Happy with both so I'd say whichever is cheaper which is almost certainly going to be the wildpeaks.

I’ve got bf Goodrich ko2 on my Dmax. Horrible in the wet. Like to flick on 4wd to get moving on a decent hill start or stability control kicking in on most roundabouts horrible. I didn’t purchase them. They were on the car in fairly new condition and I’m glad I didn’t buy them.

I’ve Toyo open country AT on another ute that were much better in the wet. Also had hankook Dynapro that were similar in wet but quite old and bought some cheap terra firma ATs that seem quite good so far.

This. I've read constantly everywhere about how bad KO2's are in the wet. A few people selling barely used sets on marketplace as well.

      • +2

Wildpeaks seem fairly well rated on some vehicle specific Facebook groups.

Wildpeak is much better in the wet compared to KO2; I have those in my LC

I had the wildpeak on my last car, were very well behaved in all conditions, and got good wear out of them.

Been running Yokohama for years. Got 123,000ks from one set.

Yokohama GO15. Fabulous in the wet.

    • Wow that is a good amount of kms

  • I recently went with Wildpeaks and am pretty happy with them. Minimal road noise and good on wet bitumen. Only annoyance is vibrations through the steering wheel >80Kmph. Not severe, just annoying. I sized up from 265/70/17 to 285 which may not have helped. My decision was based on Youtube and friends running them. All reviews are positive, while KO2 were mixed. Previous tyres were Mickey ATZ P3 which were noisy on the road and very sketchy on the wet road. Awesome offroad though.

    • Hi there appreciate the info.

Bob Jane’s got 35% off sets of yoko’s this week .
    I’m looking at x-at’s or xd’s in 265/75r16 .
    They’re a hybrid between mt n at .
All terrain tred pattern with mud terrain carcass build .
Good for bash-in a big (jap) rig .

    • +1

Can confirm that BB's deal worked for me this time when I did a test and the full 35% came off their normal price for (4 or) 5 tyres.

This is an excellent deal if you're looking for Yokohamas

  • +1

Went with the x-at’s as they’re apparently not so loud as the xd’s .

    P.S.

Someone that knows how ? Should Reilly Post this deal ,
it’s an epic price on sets of 4 ,
on actually really good tyres ,
    also Pirelli and Dunlop ,
and not price jacked before the discount .
    Deal ends Sat .

  • Hi OP, just curious what you end up buying? Same dilema

    • +1

Went with the Falken Wildpeak. They travel well both on and off the road.
