Which Gift Card to buy?

Hello,

I have been asked to buy myself $1000 worth of gift cards as part of an on-job award. I would have preferred cash but they insisted on gift cards, not sure why !!!

And now I am not sure which is the best multi-purpose gift card. My preference is for the card which allows:

  1. To buy electronics household items like a TV, Fridge, furniture etc.
  2. Has a long validity preferably 1+ year. As I am planning to use it by mid or end of next year as I would be moving to a new home !!
  3. Should be from a well known vendor for the sake of easy redemption.
4.Value for money like any special incentive or discount.

Any ideas !!!

Thanks & Appreciate your help !

    I would get this - http://www.giftcards.com.au/Coles-Group-Card.aspx

    You can spend it at
    Coles
    Myer
    Target
    Target Country and Baby Target
Kmart and Kmart Tyre & Auto
    Liquorland
    Vintage Cellars
    1st Choice Liquor
    Pick’n’Pay Hypermarket.

That or the woolworths group one - WISH gift card - which includes the stores you can see on the sample card here:
      http://everydaygiftcards.com.au/ViewCard?cardDesignId=bb8de7…

I personally would get the Coles group one though - more range of stores for every day ish items.

      Congrats by the way.

      • Thanks for the comments..yes those 2 were on my list..

any good deals on those cards? In the past i think there was a 5% discount deal..

5% is pretty good deal. Myer has 10% deal off but less versatile. We use wish cards at caltex, so $1000 against fuel goes rather quick.

Actually I think a fuel card sounds good - you'll quickly use it and the money saved with that can be spent on your everyday/new home items without having to stick to certain stores and brands.

I personally prefer the Coles Group & Myer gift card because there's a greater range of stores, as YadaYadaYada mentioned.

It's weird that Officeworks isn't listed on the front page of the website as one of the stores it's valid at. I had Coles Group & Myer gift cards and they were definitely valid at Officeworks.
          - It mentions it in the Gift Card Inclusions & Exclusions part of the Terms of Use: Inclusions - Coles Group & Myer Gift Card redeemable at Myer, Target, Baby Target, Target Country, Kmart, Kmart Tyre & Auto (all outlets from 1 December 2007), Coles supermarkets, Coles Central, BI-LO, Pick’n’Pay Hypermarkets, Liquorland, Vintage Cellars, 1st Choice Liquor Superstore and Officeworks.

A card valid at Officeworks is pretty useful because of their great pricematching policy.

I think it's more difficult to get 5% off Coles Group & Myer gift cards than WISH gift cards as the former usually only offer discounted gift cards that are restricted to particular brands of the group. The Entertainment Book offers 5% off WISH, Coles, Kmart and Coles Liquor gift cards.

Also, I think your employers chose gift cards instead of cash as you may get taxed on cash? Not sure though.

        • Thanks for your valuable inputs..seems like Coles Group & Myer gift is the way to go..

Why not go for a split of Coles and woollies. A real ozbargainer will hedge their bets based on who has the best catalogue sales ;)

    • Yeah I would go with either Coles Myer or Woolworths Group; depends on where you shop most

  • How about the XS gift card from Westfield? Technically just a preloaded EFTPOS card.
    http://westfieldgiftcards.com.au/giftcard/about_gift_cards/x…

      • Some retailers may choose not to accept the XS gift card.
This includes the Coles Group (with the exclusion of Kmart and Target) and Myer

Bunnings card as they never expire. may or may not be of ur interest as ozbargainers seem to buy even lawn movers off amazon!

    • Yeah I was just about to suggest this.

Just get Woolies or Coles and buy your normal groceries and petrol with it. Then each time you use it pay yourself in cash the equivalent of what you have "spent". It sort of converts the gift card to cash over time (you have to buy these things anyway) and it probably won't take that long.

Or ask around family/friends whether anyone is planning to make large purchase soon. They could give you the cash and you get them the card.

  • Woolies WISH is the way to go, but if you want technology it can only be used at DSE and probably not for much longer given they have been bought out.

    • You will still have Big Dub

Buy wish card and buy later visa gift card using that wish card, very long expiry and you can use anywhere.

Please confirm whether you have done this. When I last tried, this is not possible.

    • I too have tried doing this with no luck…

    • this will depend on the cash out chick who serves you. the terms and conditions state you cannot use giftcard to purchase another giftcard.
I have been successful a number of times though.
Maybe do it in smaller amounts at a time.

    • You won't be able to load money on one of Woolworths single load pre-paid Mastercards they sell ($2.95 for the card, then load what you want), because loading money on those are done using the "WOWCC PAYMENT" button the screen which treats it as a cash withdrawal (which you can't do on a WISH gift card). You can't load money on those cards with credit cards for the same reason.

It depends on what gift card you buy, and how money is loaded on it. WISH gift cards themselves aren't loaded manually, and are done so automatically at the end of the transaction, therefore you can purchase them with other gift cards or credit cards. I think so anyway.

  • I would go with a supermarket gift card. I had collected about $600 coles gift card from my previous job and it paid for my groceries for about 6 months.

6 months? i must come shopping with you and learn your secrets

well.. single person household. and I tend to buy meat from vic markets.
        I eat simple.
And this was before I joined OZbargain.

  • Caltex or Woolies/Coles. Best is to get a card that fits in with your normal spending habits. You don't want to be buying things from places just because you want to use the card.
