Best web hosting with at least 3GB+ bandwidth

Hi OZBargainers,

I am going to publish a combined forum and job portal website. I wanted to know which is the best and affordable web hosting service provider.

As this website is not limited to Australia, which server location should I prefer?

My web developer is saying at start we need at least 3GB+ bandwidth.

following things I am expecting in the package:
10GB + storage
unlimited email address
atleast 2-3 sql databases

Thanks in advance for your help

  • Not limited to Australia? What about where do you expect the majority of the traffic coming from?

Also you might want to work out a budget first before people can help you working out the best hosting solution for that budget.

3GB/month is actually not much. You can pretty much just host it on your home ADSL link (assuming static IP), and get CloudFlare pointing to it so they can cache the static asset to save bandwidth. Assuming you've got a NAS running at home 24/7 already (what?! you didn't buy the HP Microserver deal? :)

Email — just point your domain to Google Apps.

  • hosting it yourself on your home connection is plain silly with the variety of cheap hosting available.

  • Thanks Scotty and Mattgal.

I am expecting majority of traffic from Australia, US, India and may be few more countries.

Setting up home hosting is hassle and need attention. I don't mind going spending more if I am getting best result in long term when I will be expecting more traffic.

I have gone through few optons which listed below. can you please provide your view on these or suggest any better than this?

CrazyDomains (Aus servers)- their my web host(25GB+unlimited data Transfer) or My web host plus(200GB_ unlimited data transfer) looks good to me. when I spoke to sales consultant over the call he said, the bandwidth will be 100 MB, will this be sufficient for lets say 200-300 users?
I found mixed reviews about it from whirlpool

Directi - resellersclub (US servers) - this has been suggest by my web developer, however its costing me $100 for 10GB space + 150 emails + 3GB data transfer)
not sure about the reviews and quality

Racksspace - one of my friend has suggested this today, haven't done research on this yet.

please suggest me which is good interms of the values to the money, quality and good customer support?

    Thanks

    • +1

      CrazyDomains…

Probably not. Using Pamela Anderson in their ads puts them in the same league as GoDaddy. There are also other issues — just search the web.

Also some inconsistency with your quote. 200-300 concurrent users certainly add up a lot more than 3GB/month. Or do you mean 200-300 visits per month? But then you wouldn't call that a business website, would you?

      Directi/ReellerClub

They are certainly one of the bigger US ISP. Although I associate them with domain name registrar, than web hosting.

      Rackspace

That means either super-expensive managed dedicated servers, or their Xen-based unmanaged VPS. Great company but is "managing your own server" something you want to do? It's probably better starting out on a shared hosting platform, unless you are running some exotic stack.

Any we still don't know how much you are willing spend each month.

Well, if you are going to host in Australia I can probably recommend Crucial Paradigm and VentraIP for I've been customer (disclaimer: OzBargain is currently hosted with Crucial Paradigm). Neither are on the "value" side of the web hosting though, however they aren't that expensive either (VentraIP does have Zuver.net.au as their budget brand).

For US I've used DreamHost (hosting upload.ozbargain.com cheap bandwidth, nice control panel, California servers) and HostGator (cPanel, Texas servers) and they are both fine. Yes they are both super-big shared hosting providers and you'll find heaps of negative reviews on the net (like most big companies), but in general they are both miles better than those no-name small hosts.

      • Thanks Scotty,
your inputs are very helpful for me.

I think VentraIP is most suitable option with respect to my requirement at the moment

just a question about server location? which location will be better with them? Mel or SYD?

        • Well that really depends. I prefer Sydney because there are more Sydney users here, but I think network transit & data centre are more important than Sydney vs Melbourne.

For example I have VPS at both Crucial Paradigm and Mammoth Network currently, and both are in Sydney. However Mammoth's network is inferior in comparison to Crucial's. You can hardly pull over 1Mbps from my US servers on the West coast. You can check the BGP of hosting company's networks, but I think that would be too technical to get into…

  • You're dreaming if you think 3Gb a month is enough for 200-300 concurrent users. I run a website and forum that averages about 150-200 concurrent users 18 hours a day and that consumes 1.5Gb of bandwidth.

I use a VPS hosted in Texas by site5.com, 70Gb of HDD space, 2 x dedicated xenon 2.4Ghz processors and 1.5Gb of ram, unlimited everything else for $96 a month.

    • I didn't mean 200-300 concurrent users. my bad I would have mentioned that ;)

these user will be initial number of user I am guessing at the moment.

sit5.com looks good however it may be useful for me when I will have same amount of concurrent user's as your website.
