How to Find out Who Owns a Vacant Land?

There is a vacant land next to my house with numerous termite nests on it.

My house has physical barrier so I guess it is not in danger for now. But one of the nests is very close to me. The tree it is on has branches and root protruding to my backyard area. And it is dead too so a falling risk too.

I want to have the nest and tree removed. I called council it says "nope, it's not council land can't help mate." I contacted termite company and they say "nope, it's not your land can't help mate. If you can find out who owns it we can liaise with them."

So hence the question, how to find out who owns the land? Or is there any ways I can deal with it myself legally? State is QLD.

Thanks in advance!

    Qld version of land titles?
Re: the termite nest near your boundary, check if you can put termite baits on your property nearest to the potential nest.

You can ask council for the contact details if you put the reason as for to fix a fencing issue.

    • Thanks. Will try that

    • In theory, privacy act still should prevent Council from releasing the details. Best case would be to ask Council to contact the owner and request the owner contact you.

      • Depends on the council then, our one freely gave up the info once we provided our ID and title information. Took about 4-5 days before we got a reply, only contained the address, names listed on the title and their email address.

      • Councils will either provide the data for free (usually in the case if you are a neighbour) or for a fee. You'd think the privacy act would/should apply, but it doesn't. Real estate agents routinely buy ownership data in bulk from Councils for marking purposes.

Call another termite company and don’t tell them it’s not your land?

If the termites have been there for more than 12 years then according to squatters rights they own the property.

  • termites are pretty much everywhere. even if you kill a visible nest there will be more elsewhere. if you are concerned you should get termite protection around your house

    • Yes that's true it's mainly for eyesore reason.
And actually I am more wary about the tree falling.

  • Title search should tell you, have to pay for it though and I have no idea what kind of contact details you get in Queensland - https://search.titlesqld.com.au/product-search

edit: This is the example, if their name is "John Smith" it won't help much - https://www.titlesqld.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Curr…

    • you should be able to find out the property owner for free, i think from council

  • RSPCA?

  • Cut the branches protruding into your property.
"Accidently" spill orange oil, boric acid, vinegar on the tree.

  • I used to have an rpdata subscription which had owners details on it. Not sure if that has changed as it was about 10 years ago. If u know anyone with that, or could somehow get a cheap trial you could give that ago
