Air Compressor Advice? (New Ozito 2x 18v Compressor Got Me Thinking)

I've only used a compressor in a shop a handful of times, and considering getting a small unit for a live-in campervan, that I could ideally use with tool attachments (general handy stuff, but would be cool if could wratchet, etc).

Def can't fit a large shop one and realise I'll have to compromise, so looking for best bang for buck smaller unit.

I like the idea of a small 12v unit - which would mean running directly off camper batts, or running of existing 18v Ozito batts, tho will also have inverter so might not be worth finnagling about.

EDIT: I forgot to mention I have the need for a compressor of the blowing, inflating variety - which would need be a new unit anyway - which is what got me considering smaller proper'ish compressors I could presumably do more than inflate with (but am a noob and defer to all yee who come).

So …

A. Anyone have experience with Ozito 2 x 18v compressor, or advice as to why that's a bad idea? https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-2x18v-cordless-6l-oil-…

B. Other recommendations on what to get?

Being old enough to have used air tools before cordless tools were around, that compressor wouldn't be able to keep up not to mention if you've going to have the 18v batteries and charger to run the compressor, why not just use 18v tools in the first place?

    • I added above, coz I need to get an inflator regardless, so thought having a small compressor would do this and then some. I'm asking re what it'd be realistic to expect a small unit to do, and not do.

There are no compressors I'd recommend for camping that could also run tools. A twin motor unit with at least a 50l tank would be about the minimum for light use and is a fair size unit that's going to occupy a lot of space. The simple fact is air tools require a lot of throughput and therefore need a compressor that can keep up with it. Get one of the 18v or 12v inflators to do tyres etc and otherwise stick to hand or cordless tools.

        • Alright, thx, guess I got my answer!

  • In reality, you are not going to need an air compressor for anything outside of blowing air around or inflating tyres and soccer/basket/footballs, everything else you can use the battery operated tools without the need to make compressed air first.

The other issue is that an air compressor is going to eat through batteries, even the bigger 4 and 5Ah units. Any air tools you want to run, these tiny compressors just will not be able to keep up with the requirements and the compressor will just be running flat out.

    • Would any smaller 240v units give me more options?

  • I’d be more inclined to get something like this.

Then get matching cordless tools rather than air tools. Cordless is more versatile. It doesn’t require air lines. Air tools are yesterdays technology.

    • Yeah, had squizzed that, is this one not good if just for inflation? (reviews look good): https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-high-pressure-air-…

      • Difference is that the one I linked also has high volume so it’d be good for airbeds or inflatable toys. I’ve got a similar Ryobi one. It’s good for bike or wheelbarrow tyres and soccer balls but I haven’t used it on a car tyres yet it doesn’t seem quick enough.

If you’re just getting one for pumping tyres from beach pressure get a 4wd style one it’ll be a lot quicker. There a recent thread with a few links in it for them.

If it’s just for topping off occasionally just go to the servo.

        • Mainly for fat tyre e-bike that'll be main transport away from truck, also truck tyres.

This actually looks solid, looks a deal in its own right (worth getting an ozito battery adaptor methinks):

          • @nessism: If it were me in your position then I’d be looking for a hard wired 4wd type and get a hose long enough to get to all tyres on the vehicle. Cordless is good for being portable, not for lots of air.

            • @Euphemistic: I think the compromise of portability, take with (mainly for bike), and emergency flats (truck 🏡 would do a LOT more sitting in one place, than on the road) is the sweet spot for me.

              Thx tho 👍

              • @nessism: Having a bigger compressor would be good for blowing dust out of things too if you’re doing outback travel.

                • @Euphemistic: Bigger = which exactly?

                • @Euphemistic: Just get one of the ~$90 workshop blowers for whatever battery system you're using. Can blow out dust and fan camp fires etc.
