Chainsaw Review:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsmTf99YUF8&t=23s

Chainsaw kit at TradeTools

Skin only chainsaw $499 - so with the 7.5Ah redemption that's like buying the chainsaw for $50

Or 5Ah kit…
You can also spend $1 more for the normal $800+ redemption.

Those two batteries alone are $800 retail - and they never go on sale, so its like getting a free chainsaw and rapid charger (and whatever that battery link/harness thingo is)!

(CSX3000) EGO 56V 30cm (12") Brushless Cordless Top Handle Chainsaw Skin
(BA2800T) EGO 56V 5.0Ah Lithium-Ion Battery with Fuel Gauge
(CH5500E) EGO 56V Rapid Charger

Other new commercial range items that come with the 7.5Ah redemption
Commercial backpack blower skin : https://www.tradetools.com/ego-56v-commercial-1360m3-h-dual-…
Commercial backpack 10Ah kit : https://www.tradetools.com/ego-56v-commercial-10-0ah-1360m3-…
https://www.tradetools.com/ego-56v-commercial-telescopic-pow…
https://www.tradetools.com/ego-56v-commercial-450mm-brushles…
and several other of their new range. Cheapest (other than chainsaw) seems to be the tools at the $599 price point of which there are quite a few, so at $450 for the free 7.5Ah pack its quite the deal for the new commercial stuff.

  • Why is this a bargain?

    • +3

      Because this is OzBargain!

I think it's just the redemption deal. It's a pretty good one right now. Past couple of deals have been pretty lame.

  • Can anybody tell me if this is a better option than the larger (but not "commercial") options like the 45cm?

I guess a 30cm bar is better than 45 if it runs stronger. I'm sure for 99% of what I do a 12" bar would be fine…but I had been planning to get something longer.

Edit: I see now…it will take the longer bars too if you want. Hmmm.

    • Yep

      30cm guide bar & chain: Compatible with 35cm, 40cm bar & chain

    • I have the 18" (45cm) and it moves that size well. I have seen reviews saying that realistically for the power it has, it should have a 16" bar. I have cut through some pretty decent size hardwoods with no real issue. From memory I would say the largest trunk was about 1.5 x the bar.

Don't just look at the bar length, also look at the chain it takes. I am unsure if EGO specs different chain for different bar lengths, but it makes a huge difference on cut and the ability to replace the chain. It was a major part of why I ended up selling my DeWalt chainsaw without using it, and the chian was too narrow/weak and hard to get replacements.

    • Coming back to your original question, this is a top handle chainsaw, so it has been designed for specific needs, it is not for general usage. Top handles were designed for tree work,ie, up in the trees where you need less weight and have a huge chance that you will be over the top of the item you're cutting, or it's overhead of you.

Regular rear handle chainsaws are extremely dangerous for overhead work as you can't control the kickback. Hence the creation of top handles. For every day use on the ground though, rear handles are far better as they allow for far better control.

      • Really, what I'm hearing is, I need at least two saws!!

  • Ugh - I was actually in the market for a Stihl MS180 (around that price point) - But this is tempting. Anyone have any advice? General homeowner use.

    • You can get skin only for $499 so if you already have a charger its seriously tempting.

    • +1

For that price, and that purpose, I would still get that Stihl.
Unless you already have an EGO charger, then it's a big jump in dollars even with this deal.

    • Check out the Machinery Nation video on YouTube comparing this against an Echo battery saw. This thing looks like a little monster. You can just hear how it's not even labouring on full depth cuts.

I suspect I will have ordered one of these shortly. Have been lacking a chainsaw for a while. I think this is the one. I don't mind the battery/cable type setup - easier on hands/arms/shoulders.

      • +1

Me too. I've just caved. Chainsaw was the last tool missing from my Ego quiver… I promise.

        • I have sought approval from the finance minister first. Will I regret that?

She is the one who puts me to work though, so it seems fair…

        • Ordered the kit. Will sell the charger as I already have two, but the extra 5ah battery will be handy. Also ordered 16" bar and will get an Oregon R56 chain to go on it (little cheaper than the EGO chain).

          • @Banj0: Yeah the 5ah packs are the most versatile.

    • It appears the MS180 is only $299 at the moment, it's a no-brainer, unless you need battery powered due to noise or such… (very much horses for coursed though)

I've had a MS181 for quite a few years, great little saws, very capable..

  • +1

I got an email form EGO earlier about bonus 7.5Ah on commercial tools, but it was also a bit vague and no link to T&Cs. Expect other retailers to offer it too.

It seems like most of the commercial range is getting this deal, check the SKUs from here - https://egopowerplus.com.au/commercial-series/

  • I live by the bush and end up needing a chainsaw fairly often, but have to stop borrowing other peoples stuff. I have Makita 18V power tools and was thinking of getting a 2X 18V (36V) 40cm bar skin for around $500. Would this perform better than that option. I prefer something that has a bit of grunt as I sometimes need to cut some fairly large diameter logs (hence the 40cm bar).

    • In the review I posted its cutting some pretty thick branches well over 12"

    • My neighbour has the Makita twin battery chainsaw, and he is happy with it overall for most of his needs.
When we were on my property cutting up downed trees for him to use as firewood, I let him use my 18” EGO, and yeah, he said it was night and day difference. His took far far longer on some of the stuff we were cutting up. As per everything, it all depends on what you want it for as to what suits best, plus budget.

Plus other things to go read

    • Can you stack it with the other offer though (which is not as good…but still)…

      • Read the T&Cs and let us know.

  • seems just getting the chainsaw is enough and not needing the combo? CSX3000

i the market for a shorter chainsaw and dont really need the combo

    • Yep thats what I did. I already have 3x 5Ah packs so no need for another although I reckon they are the sweet spot.

      • Replied to someone else ower down, another option:

Well, not the greatest deal, but you can buy 4 x $100 and 1 x $50 ULTIMATE GIFT FOR HIM giftwards from BIGW then use the cards at a Total Tools (instore only). You'll get 10% extra value, so for $450 spend will get $495 of value on cards. Add $5 in cash.

That way, grab a skin only for $455 and get a free 7.5ah battery. If you have no need for said battery, sell it and likely pay $50-$100 for the chainsaw.

  • Lol their website has been hit by the Chain Saw Massacre? I am getting "Sorry! An unexpected error occurred. Error: Network error: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data"

  • Wish they'd discount the skin only. I've already got a few ego batteries. I want a cheap ego saw though.

Basically works out at 9% off, better than nothing and a free battery too

      • Good tip! Thanks for the idea.

  • So, reading the T&Cs appears you can claim 4 times. Put 4 on hold. Will be grabbing $1800 of ULTIMATE HIM gift cards from BIGW (Extra 10% value) = $1980. Will then claim for 4 x 7.5ah batteries. Will then sell the skins only brand new. I don't expect to lose more than $100 per saw, so maybe $400 or less max, for $1796 of batteries seems like a steal to me.

Buy one battery get three free basically haha

    • +1

Will then sell the skins only brand new. I don't expect to lose more than $100 per saw

I think you will struggle personally. These are specialist saws, so you are needing either arborists already on the EGO eco system, or simply ignorant buyers getting the wrong saw.
For $400 you can buy the 16" brand new, or for $100 more get the 14" with battery and charger.

I think you have worded that wrong based on your maths. I gather you intent to sell the full kits for $100 less, so sell them for $700 and just keep the 7.5Ah from redemptions. If you're just selling the "skins" that would be the chainsaw only, thus keeping the 5Ah battery and chargers.

      • Not buying the kits. The $499 skin gets you a free 7.5ah battery.

        I bought 4 x $499 chainsaws, paying $1800 for them (making them $450 each).

I have pre-sold three already for $350 (facebook group) = $1050. I have pre-sold two batteries as well for $390 each, so $1830 all up.

I have two 7.5ah batteries and a chainsaw for free now :) I'm happy.

        • Nice work.

I gather they had to be special ordered in by Total Tools? none of the stores around me have stock.

          • @snuke: Managed to grab two at one, then one at two other stores. Little bit of a time waste yesterday picking them up but worth it for two free batteries in the end.

Just moved to all EGO and grabbed a few things, so this helps with batteries. WIll have 4 x 7.5ah and 2 x 2.5ah batteries when done which is more than enought o do a whole day of works at home and then some. Goal was to main items all set without switching batteries.

            • @mxlmxlmxl: Lucky, so you purchased two form one total Tools, but did them in two seperate transitions right?

  • What can you buy for $1 from their range?
Unless the reatiler is willing to charge you 800 instead of 799

    • The $800 deal is its own thing. There is also a commercial redemption deal, which applies to some gear such as the 12" commercial chainsaw. No need for an $800 purchase in that deal - you can just buy the skin at $499 and get the battery. Great deal.

      • Thanks

  • For anyone doing this - I received two batteries today already from the offer/redemption. I'm in VIC and I believe their office is like 20km from me.

    • +1

Wow that was fast. I'm still waiting for my chainsaw to arrive. Hopefully you've left some stock for the rest of us

    • +1

Nic and quick, their head office is in Rowville, but I suspect their stock is elsewhere.

    • Got my free battery today. The chainsaw hasn't even arrived yet. Maybe I should cancel the order lol.

      • I noticed this on the T&Cs, seems to not apply:

"Claims cannot be made on an invoice where stock has not been physically supplied."

        • Yeah I just assumed I would have to wait for the serial number off the device like I'm sure I had to for previous redemptions. But I went through the claim process just using the emailed invoice and it never asked for a serial number or anything. I am kind of surprised.
