(NSW, SYD) Recommendations on Towbar Supplied/Installed for SUV

Hi guys,

Looking to get a towbar for a 2021 Hyundai Tucson Active (TL something series, not the newer NX4 that was released the same year). I've contacted ARB, Hayman Reese & Hyundai, all seem to be about $1700 supplied ($500 lab from Hyundai :o), which seem much higher priced than I expected. Hyundai also stated their towbars have a rating of 750kg 'unbrake' & if I need to tow more I would need something extra (that they don't have) which allows for electronic braking. Does this make sense?

I contacted a local Towbar manufacturer (Carasel), haven't heard of them before & they priced me for their own brand $1000 supplied and fitted which is significantly less than Hayman Reese, which from them was also $1700, but their brand towbar (one of them at least) states 1500kg towing, whereas the car can tow 1600kg. Though 100kg doesn't seem like much, I'm thinking it's still a good amount of weight that would come in handy, no? I don't think ARB make a towbar for this model car from what I've seen (as they quoted Hayman Reese too).

Another brand I've recently come across is TAG, but haven't heard much about this brand.

Has anyone had a towbar installed in Sydney-region, or can recommend any other places that offer towbar supplied/fitted?

If you tow over 750kg the trailer needs to have brakes. There are a few options as to brakes.

    1. ‘Override’ brakes are a non electronic and don’t need any controller fitted. Normally use the weight of the trailer pushing on the car to activate the brakes.
    2. Electric brakes with an electronic brake controller fitted to the car, hard wired. I have a Redarc Towpro fitted to my car. Cost about $500 installed I think, but I diy’d do it was cheaper.
    3. Electric brakes with a portable controller that works off Bluetooth or similar and plugs into power in the car but can be removed. This type needs a control box on the trailer that you probably need to purchase.

Most caravans will have electric brakes. Many boat trailers will have non electric override brakes.

as for the rest, you’ve gotta pay the price for a HR bar. They’re the most popular and reputable brand. There are cheaper options and as long as they are rated properly should be OK, but depends if you’re willing to save a buck for something that’s not as well known.

    • Sorry for the delay, much appreciate the information provided, I'll check out the braking options. As far as I can tell, we would be towing mostly a smaller trailer <7'x5', collecting stuff from Gumtree/fb marketplace. I don't see us towing anything larger, however having the option would be nice. From what I've read hear, 7'x5' would be limited to 750kg before needing a trailer with brakes.

Do you think a 1500kg could tow a car if needed?

You will have a hard time getting a car and trailer under 1500kg but it’s possible with a small car and a lightweight car trailer.

that car is pretty trash for towing, what are you realistically trying to pull? your towbar really can hold some cargo or a bike, lol. really weak car.

you can install it yourself, its very easy. its just a bolt on.

  • Vehicle may state 1600kg towing capacity but that doesn’t mean you can tow 1600kg. There’s a lot more to it and suggest you read up on it

    • Thanks for the heads-up :). I've never towed anything myself so I'll have to look into what's required & what weight is realistic, particularly in the Hyundai Tucson.

I'd hate to be pulling 1500kg in a Tucson.

    • Towing capacity has gone out of control.
My car is 3.2tonne tow capacity with a vehicle weight of 2.2tonne. There's no way I'd tow more than 2.5 tonne with it for significant distances.

    • I've never towed before, what's it like towing 1500kg?

  • My sister used these guys for her Audi Q7.
Did a good job, so no complaints.
