iPhone 4-5 metro view signal issues

I've had metro view for my iphone 4-5, and the problem is the signal in areas like in the mountain and unground tunnels losses signal compared to my tomtom GPS 730, I've read that iPhones have a true GPS hardware but why does it do this and my tomtom doesn't?

  • Because the GPS microcontroller chips they use in phones are inferior to dedicated GPS's?

A dedicated GPS has a much better antenna and a more sensitive chip overall, which uses more power and can receive signals even through several layers of walls. That's why they fare better in the city than phones do.

  • Cheers, never knew that. Also since GPs"s like Tom toms and garmen are gone down on price for last couple of years, now you can purchase ones around $100 mark, why don't smart phones use the same hardware? Is it a size factor or still manufacturing costs?

    • Size factor (weight and thin-ness restrictions), power consumption (battery costs), costs of production and using an expensive GPS chipset.
