Product Manager Vs Project Manager Vs Marketing

Asking for a friend.
She want a new career change after having kid.

Options that she was thinking are :

  • Product Manager
  • Project Manager
  • Marketing

About her:
She has a bit of background in business/some accounting work. And quite like to talk to people.
Willing to take some short course to improve her skill.

Any input?
What is the cons/pros for each?

Thanks

That’s not even close to enough context or background information to provide any useful guidance.

Those role options are also quite varied depending on which industry. An IT Project Manager is nothing like an Engineering Project Manager.

First step should be trawling LinkedIn job listings to narrow down what fields she meets the required experience/qualifications and sound remotely interesting to delve into. The listings will also state any specific requirements to consider training/courses for.

She could be an IT product manager pretty easy. In my experience they are desperate to fill female head count in IT departments. If she doesn't know much about the product or IT in general she should fit right in with the other product managers.

    • hahaha brutal.

      You mean any job

ESG baby, the new buzz word, people even make businesses about advising big companies on ESG

    • You must work in a vacuum.

Product managers are more diverse in gender ratio than engineers. In a lot of places there are more women in product than men

As to your comment, the same could be said about engineers being code monkeys that have no understanding of the business beyond wanting to do endless hours of tech debt that solves problems for two customers.

      Generalisations are fun

I think you misread what I said, this was basically my point. Hard to hire women into the more technical roles to reach the gender ratio targets most big companies have these days, so roles like product management tend to go to women.

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek, but in general i've seen far more engineers that are filling in for a lack of knowledge/skill by BAs and PMs than i've seen those roles ever "make up" for poor performance by engineers or other technical staff. That said, a good product manager or BA is amazing for a team.

      1. Learn the bare minimum about the project
      2. Deploy project with issues, and let everyone else deal with it
      3. Rinse
      4. Repeat
  • I’m in healthcare project management but also do clinical work. It’s about 50/50 project managers that have a clinical background vs don’t. It's not challenging work from a PM point of view and there is A LOT of talking to people. There’s a bunch of free courses in healthcare redesign and data analysis that would be advantageous to have to get into the sector as well as knowledge of some of the major project management methodologies. It’s not a hard field to get into and can be nice making meaningful change and improvement in healthcare.

These roles are so different you might as well be asking if she should be a lawyer or a doctor.

    • I think doctor.

    Marketing..

Good for women. Talk in meetings all day. Make things look pretty.

Product Manager requires a bit more technical knowledge about your field and a lot of interaction with the design teams and business heads.

  • Jira or gnat chart or PowerPoint slides

  • Google what they are and use seek etc to see what companies advertise for each of them as companies seek position A, but the details are more like position B so make sure you read the job description carefully.
