Formovie Theatre 4k UST Projector + NP Classic ALR 100" Screen $4,599 Delivered @ Nothing Projector

70

I've been in the market for an Ultra Short Throw projector and have been tossing up between the Hisense L9H which includes a bundled projector screen, or the very well rated Formovie Theatre. So far I can't find many reviews on the Aus version of Hisense L9H, so this bundled deal for cheaper than the Hisense bundle seems like a no-brainer.

I've recently installed my Vava 120" screen with my Chroma UST after a wait of 2yrs to move house (!).
Whilst the wall was great, the improvement in the screen is amazing. If you can budget for a screen it will be so much more worth it.
    Good luck with the hunt.

Don't know why they bother with .99c anymore lol.. and don't come with screen..

  • definitely not worth it,its not bright as the tv and blurring from time to time. Folks for the same price get a 85 inch tv is way better than the laser projector. “Capped”

Personally I wouldn't trade my 120" projector for a 85" tv, not in a million years. It's only 1080p too. I'll be upgrading to a pixel shift 4k at some stage, unless 120" tv comes out at 4 grand.

      • Nah, TCL and Hisense had big price drop for their 98'' and 100'' 4K mini led tv, which price is the equivalent as op’s deal, trust me, projector this days is suffering as tv companies like tcl and Hisense dropping more affordable huge screen tvs.

I hear you, it's getting closer. But you are talking a 20" difference still.

        • Projector only wins out when you are going for a temporary screen setup.
Eg you have a lovely wall with artwork or whatever and then can hit a button and screen comes down and projector on.

My parents have this setup and having a large tv in pace would be much worse for the overall aesthetics.

have a Benq w1070 and picture is great, 120" too.. 3D blu rays so good. 1080p and looks great!

Projectors are a bit like vinyl records in a way… there is just something about them.

Another vote for the 120" projector. I went for the Hisense PX2-PRO for $3.5k [Buysmarte] + 120" Screenpro T Prism screen for $1k [Alibaba].

    • Any common overheating dmd chip pixel issues?

Formovie? Four and a half grand? Pass.

  • Grabbed the Triple Laser Samsung SP-LSP9 during Footy Finals week for $4300 including the additional 4 years Replacement warranty from Harvey Norman !

    • Doesn't look a deal

Ohh … my Apologies.. I reckon it was as it retails for $9999 at this very moment on HN website..and that too without the 4 year replacement warranty.

Love the clarity plus the Samsung interface !

        • Looks like that was a decent price, going by LSP9T OzBargain post history.

I get concerned with these and other projectors heading towards premium price ranges when they still report common drawbacks such as rainbow effect and chip quality control after relatively short periods in their purported lifespan.

and since the majority source similar manufacturing, these appear to be inherent flaws in design/components for the last three years.

          Mic drop. Good deal.

        • Not a great deal unfortunately - the $9999 pricetag is just ridiculous and given its a pretty old system can get far better UST projectos like the Formovie for the ~$4300 price tag

  • +1

Have you considered the Hisense 100U7KAU?

    • I just started looking into this model and for the same price range it's probably the better screen overall. I'll try and see it in person before deciding which way to go. Thanks

Formovie are pretty highly regarded. Not sure if people suggesting alternative brands realise this, but it is consistently rated higher than competitors.

    Only question is warranty.

    • Best contrast ratio in the market. Great projector.

In USTs this unit or rather the global version of this unit is widely regarded as the best in terms of price to picture quality.. this is not a bad price since it comes with Australian warranty, of course be aware that quality control is not a strong point with any of these units including Hisense so if you get a lemon you ship it to the Australian repair centre they ship it to China so maybe a while IF things go wrong ..having said that most known issues are related to the optics with edges not as sharp or with cooling.

For a 100 inch image I would personally just buy a 98 inch TV if it is at the same price offering installed, no projector can match the brightness or contrast levels of a TV which is obvious since one is a projection, the other is a live surface with no need for projection which depends on the quality of glass. TVs and computer screens however cause visual fatigue which a projector does not which is why I guess projectors are still popular not to mention the size but if the same sized image can be had on a TV at a similar or slightly higher cost go for the TV.

If however you have the luxury of a dedicated room, a 130 inch projected image is a joy to watch at any distance from 2m onwards and it costs way less which makes it more appealing if you are ok with changing the bulbs every couple of years. I have a refurbished Epson from the manufacturer which cost me 1500 bucks at the time with 2 years warranty, a 130 inch edge free screen which looks like a telly which cost me 450 and a 5.1.2 mongrel surround sound system with a Denon 4k AVR which cost me 900 used ..3k all up on a full fledged home theatre with faux 4k but you would be hard pressed to tell and I use it for 6 hours every evening …. As soon as a 130 inch Mini LED TV comes on at 3k I ll keep the speakers and AVR and switch but till then I shall stay with it

Which brings me to another important point, the laser projectors do not need bulb change..well they do but in 10 to 18 years and they are not designed for it ..I think in 5 years we shall have active displays paper thin with printed circuit boards being controlled by a 50 cent sized cpu and a tiny 2 Tb flash as a RAM and hybrid storage ..or maybe they wont ..either ways I hope this helps someone

In short if you need a 100 inch image buy the 98 inch telly, if you want to go bigger and you do not have a dedicated room which can be made dark and is at least 4 meter long , then buy this unit sans the screen but you will spend upwards of 2k for the igger than 100 inch UST screen delivered to your doorstep so negotiate the price accordingly, if you have the space then create a dark room and buy a long throw used, new, refurbished does not matter since the long throws have been around for a while , get a pixel shifting faux 4k projector, start with projecting on the wall and go from there .. screen, audio, massage chairs

    • I bought the Formovie Theatre recently from NP and so far it's been great especially watching a movie on a 120 inch ALR screen.

I agree with @shaidas regarding the options. If you don't have a dedicated cinema dark room, want something larger then 100 inch then this ticks all the box.

Films look really good, contrast is great, the black are very impressive and the Bowers and Wilkins speakers sound great.

It also offers Dolby Vision and HDR 10 + which is nice features for a projector.

I bought this projector and their 120-inch ALR screen when I moved out in May from NP and I have had no issues so far. The screen is a pain to assemble since some pieces don't fit unless you get the projector screen fabric perfectly centred while it's also being pulled by the springs that are used to keep it taut.

FYI, it also comes with an Australian power cable for those wondering, before I bought it I was trying to find out but could never find my answer till I got it delivered.

  • Would love to hear reviews from anyone that has the Hisense L9H 120" - Is set-up at Harvey Norman Osborne Park, WA showing the cricket in a lit showroom - was pretty epic

I ended up getting the same deal with with 100" black series for $4800 delivered over black friday by asking for a deal using the chat. It was delivered within the week.

It's my first UST projector setup so nothing to compare to, but I find it pretty usable in daylight or with lights on. It really shines in a dark room as expected.

Some reviews on the formovie theatre said Dolby vision had brightness issues, but I got it working and didn't notice a severe reduction in brightness. So far very pleased with the unit.

        I saw reviews about

        • Did your screen come separately?

I have received the projector but no screen..
